Abstract:
Objective:To investigate the effects of hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) therapy combined with functional rehabilitation exercise on clinical symptoms, serum neuron-specific enolase (NSE), myelin basic protein (MBP), β-enkephalin (β-EP), and the changes of electroencephalogram (EEG) results in children with viral encephalitis (VE).Methods:A total of 83 children with VE admitted to the Department of Pediatrics of Hai’an People’s Hospital from January 2018 to December 2019 were enrolled and divided into observation group ( n=42) and control group ( n=41) according to the random number table method. The control group was treated with conventional treatment, and the observation group was additionally treated with HBO combined with functional rehabilitation exercise. The time to the disappearance of clinical symptoms, the levels of serum NSE, MBP and β-EP, the limb function scores, the changes of EEG results, and adverse reactions were compared between the two groups. Results:After treatment, the total clinical effective rate in the observation group (97.62%) was higher than that in the control group (85.37%) with statistically significant difference ( P<0.05). The time to the disappearance of symptoms, such as fever, vomiting, headache, coma, and convulsions in the observation group, was less than those in the control group ( P<0.05). The levels of serum NSE, MBP, and β-EP in both two groups decreased after treatment, and the levels of those in the observation group were lower than those in the control group ( P <0.05). The abnormal rate of EEG results in the observation group (19.05%) was lower than that in control group (39.02%) with statistically significant difference ( P<0.05). After treatment, the functional motor scores of the two groups were increased, and the scores in the observation group were higher than those in the control group ( P<0.05). The incidence of adverse reactions in the observation group was not significantly different from that in the control group ( P>0.05). Conclusion:Hyperbaric oxygen therapy combined with functional rehabilitation exercise can effectively shorten the time to the disappearance of clinical symptoms, improve the limb motor function, reduce the levels of serum NSE, MBP, β-EP, and abnormal rate of EEG results, and promote nerve function recovery in children with VE.
