Abstract:
Objective:To investigate the causal relationship between self-neglect,depression,and activities of daily living ability in older adults. Methods:A longitudinal investigation was conducted over two phases for 357 elderly individuals from a comprehensive care facility, employing the Activities of Daily Living Scale(ADL),the Self-Neglect in Elderly Scale(SES),and the Geriatric Depression Scale-15(GDS-15).Cross-lagged analysis was used to examine the relationships between variables. Results:The ADL,SES and GDS-15 scores were all lower at baseline than 4 months later(Ps<0.001).The SES scores at baseline were positively correlated with the GDS-15(β=0.34,P<0.001)and ADL scores(β=0.74,P<0.001)4 months later. The GDS-15 scores at baseline were positively correlated with the ADL scores 4 months later(β=0.07,P<0.01).Conclusion:Self-neglect and de-pressive symptoms among older adults could directly predict functional decline in daily activities.
