Abstract:
Hypothalamic obesity (HO) is a syndrome characterized by metabolic abnormalities and weight gain resulting from structural or functional abnormalities of the hypothalamus (such as tumors, surgery, trauma, inflammation, or congenital diseases). In recent years, with the in-depth research in neuroscience, endocrinology, and genetics, there have been new advancements in pathogenesis and treatment strategies of HO. This article reviews the recent advance in pathogenesis and treatment of HO from aspects as dysregulation of neuroendocrine pathways, blood-brain barrier dysfunction, genetic abnormalities, and gut-liver-brain axis abnormalities, with the aim of providing new directions for HO precise treatment.
