- Abstract: Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) is becoming increasingly common. NSSI is typically associated with emotional and psychiatric distress and mainly seriously affects mental health in adolescents. Trait impulsivity, reward circuitry, and the endogenous opioid system are all playing an essential role in the neurobiological mechanism. This review conceptualizes the neurobiology of NSSI based upon the new research evidence.
