The different activation patterns of the prefrontal cortex between bipolar depression and unipolar depression under voice fluency task

Abstract:
Objective:Exploring the difference of the prefrontal cortex activation between Unipolar Depression(UD) and Bipolar Depression(BD).Methods:The changes of oxygenated hemoglobin concentration in the prefrontal lobe of 69 patients with UD and 68 patients with BD under verbal fluency task were collected and compared by Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS) and the correlation between the scores of the Hamilton Depression Scale (HAMD) and the function of the subject′s prefrontal cortex was analyzed by partial correlation analysis.Results:There were significant differences in oxygenated hemoglobin concentration changes in the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, bilateral ventrolateral prefrontal cortex and bilateral orbitofrontal cortex ( P<0.05) between the UD and BD group. And the oxygenated hemoglobin concentration changes in the right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex was correlated with the severity of depressive symptoms in both the BD and UD groups ( P<0.05), while the oxygenated hemoglobin concentration changes in the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex was only associated with the severity of depressive symptoms in the UD group. Conclusion:There are significant differences in activation of the lateral prefrontal cortex and orbitofrontal cortex between the patients with BD and UD, and in BD patients, the correlation of the cortex activation and the severity of depressive symptoms is different between the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex and the right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex.
