Abstract:
Perivascular spaces (PVS) are fluid-filled spaces surrounding the cerebral vessels, which are one of the important imaging markers of cerebral small vessel disease (CSVD). The severity of magnetic resonance imaging-visible PVS is associated with the disease burden of multiple neurological diseases. Visual Rating Scale is widely used to evaluate PVS severity. With the development of imaging and computer technology, computational methods based on threshold segmentation, morphological filtering and machine learning have been developed allowing automatically quantifying the number, morphology, and spatial distribution of PVS. The quantitative methods of PVS and the clinical applications were reviewed in this article.
