Abstract: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic autoimmune-mediated inflammatory disease whose etiology and pathogenesis are not clear. It is generally believed that multiple factors such as genetics, environment and immunity are involved in the occurrence and development of IBD. Particularly, abnormal immune regulation is the central link in IBD progression. Interleukin-6 (IL-6) is a pleiotropic cytokine regulating innate and acquired immune responses, and also an important regulator of the inflammatory response. This article reviews the role of IL-6 in the progression and treatment of IBD in order to provide a basis for clinical decision-making.
