Abstract:
Abiraterone reduces androgen synthesis through inhibition of CYP17A1 activity and is therefore used in the treatment of metastatic prostate cancer. However, it can cause accumulation of mineralocorticoid intermediates and impaired production of cortisol, leading to hypertension, hypokalemia, and adrenocortical insufficiency. This case report presents a prostate cancer patient who developed hypokalemia following treatment with abiraterone. Endocrine testing revealed that abiraterone induced hormonal alterations and contributed to adrenal hyperplasia, which was implicated in the onset of hypokalemia.
