"Telling Traditional Chinese Medicine Stories Well in English"—A Praxis of Fostering Virtue through Foreign Language Edu-cation at Traditional Chinese Medicine Colleges and Universities Based on Product-Oriented Approach

Abstract:
[Objective]To explore a new way to cultivate international communication talents of traditional Chinese medicine(TCM)via integrating"telling TCM stories well"into college English curricula.[Methods]Resorting to literature research methods,based on the analysis of the current studies on"telling China's stories well in foreign languages"in China,the paper constructed a theoretical framework of fostering virtue by"telling TCM stories well in English"in foreign language curricula,and then conducted a praxis of an integrated system of fostering virtue in foreign languages based on product-oriented approach(POA).Finally,it carried out questionnaires and interviews for evaluation of and reflection on the praxis.[Results]The theoretical framework of the integrated system of fostering virtue in foreign languages based on POA built conceptual scaffolding for students.The survey results showed that the praxis had improved students' engagement,attentiveness and proactivity significantly.Specifically,their willingness to speak in the activities increased to 69.0％,their attentiveness to the oral practice rose up to 79.8％,and their proactivity increased to 77.6％.[Conclusion]Guiding students to"Tell TCM stories well in English"promotes students' foreign language competence,as well as their moral quality and cultural confidence,so as to boost the cultivation of international communication talents of TCM culture.
