Abstract:
Objective To explore the expression and clinicopathological significance of secretory leukocyte protease inhibitor(SLPI)in cervical adenocarcinoma(CA)and adenocarcinoma in situ(AIS)of the cervix, and to analyze the correlation between SLPI expression and human papilloma virus(HPV)infection. Methods A total of 87 cases of cervical glandular lesions diagnosed in the Department of Pathology, the Affiliated Changsha Central Hospital,Hengyang Medical School,University of South China Changsha Central Hospital, from January 2019 to December 2022 were selected.Immunohistochemical staining of SLPI protein and HPV gene detection were performed on the tissues to explore the expression of SLPI in CA,AIS,and normal cervical glands, and to analyze the correlation between its expression level and the clinicopathological characteristics of CA patients and HPV infection. Results The expression of SLPI in AIS and CA tissues was lower than that in normal cervical tissues(P<0.05).There was a negative correlation between the expression of SLPI and HPV infection(r=-0.353,P<0.05).The expression of SLPI was significantly correlated with histological differentiation,HPV infection, vascular invasion, lymph node metastasis,Silva classification, and International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics staging of CA(P<0.05).Conclusion SLPI is low-expressed in CA,which is closely related to the invasive biological and pathological characteristics. The low expression of SLPI is related to HPV infection, suggesting that SLPI may participate in the progression of CA as a tumor-suppressor factor. The decrease in SLPI expression may indicate HPV infection.SLPI is expected to become a potential biomarker for the diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis of CA.
