Abstract:
Objective To evaluate the differences between total tibial model combined with cortico-cancellous bone and simple cortical tibial model in finite element analysis. Methods Based on the tibial CT data of a healthy young male volunteer,a three-dimensional finite element model of the tibia was developed by digital three-dimensional reconstruction technique, including the cortical bone group and the total tibial model group. The finite element analysis of the models in the 2 groups was performed using axial compression and axial torsion, respectively. Results Under 2 different loads of axial compression and axial torsion, the stress distribution trends of the 2 models were similar, and the stress peak value of the cortical bone group was higher than that of the total tibial model group. There were no significant differences in axial displacement, torsion angle,or structural stiffness between the 2 groups. Conclusion Both numeral models can be used in the finite element analysis of tibia. When the research focus was the stability of the model, the simple cortical bone model simplifies the modeling work and calculation process. With the research focus on structural stress,it is necessary to consider its influence on the calculation results,if a simplified tibial model is used.
