Abstract:
Objective To investigate whether mupirocin prophylaxis could reduce the incidence of infection following button -hole cannulation in patients with hemodialysis .Methods Sixty cases that received buttonhole cannulation in the Hemodialysis Centre of the hospital were divided in accordance with different treatment methods into the routine sterilization group and the mupirocin prophy -laxis group, each consisting of 30 cases. After 18-month observation, the incidence rates of infection caused by cannulation , false aneu-rysm and vascular stenosis were compared between the 2 groups. Results Twenty-seven cases in the routine sterilization group and 29 cases in the mupirocin prophylaxis group terminated the whole observation process .Three cases (10.34%) in the mupirocin prophylax-is group had mild infection, while in the routine sterilization group there were 9 cases of infection(33.33%), of which 5 had mild in-fection (18.52%) and 4 had severe infection (14.81%).The incidence of infection caused by cannulation in the mupirocin prophy -laxis group was significantly lower than that of the routine sterilization group (P<0.05).There were no statistical differences in the in-cidence of false aneurysm and vascular stenosis , when comparisons were made between the 2 groups(P>0.05).Conclusion Mupiro-cin prophylaxis could effectively reduce the rate of infection in patients with hemodialysis following buttonhole cannulation , the rate of severe infection in particular .Furthermore, it would not increase the risk of complications caused by other punctures .
