Abstract:
Objective To observe the effect of herbal medicine on the life quality and survival time of the esophageal cancer patients after surgery. Methods With their knowledge and consent, 180 esophageal cancer patients after surgery were divided into 3 groups:the pure chemotherapy group, the pure traditional herbal medicine group and the chemotherapy +herbal medicine group, each consisting of 60 patients. The quality of life questionnaire ( QLQ-C30) and survival analysis were used to assess the quality of life and survival time of the patients. Results The clinical symptoms and physical functions in all the patients of the 3 groups were improved to some extent after treatment. However, on the whole, symptom improvement of the chemotherapy +herbal medicine group was the most sufficient(P<0.05).After intervention, the immune function of both the chemotherapy +herbal medicine group and the pure herbal medicine group was improved, while that of the chemotherapy group was decreased. The survival time of the chemotherapy group was (27.21 ±3.55) months, while that of the herbal medicine group was (28.56 ±4.19) months, and that of the chemotherapy +herbal medicine group was (34.58 ±3.24) months.By Log-rank test, statistical significance could be noted in survival time of the 3 groups (χ2 =5.698, P=0.037).Conclusion Taking traditional herbal medicine after surgery could significantly improve the life quality, immune function and survival rate of the esophageal cancer patients, and this comprehensive intervention profile could be extended in the clinical practice.
