Abstract:
Patients with cryptogenic stroke (CS) account for approximately 26% of all patients with ischemic stroke, and the majority of them are embolic stroke, thus introducing the concept of embolic stroke of undetermined source (ESUS). Patients with ESUS only include patients with CS who have completed standard examinations but have not been able to determine the cause, and do not include patients with multiple possible causes and incomplete standard examinations. This article reviews the latest research progress on the possible etiologies and pathogenesis of CS, highlighting the previously underestimated role of supracardiac atherosclerosis in the etiologies of ESUS.
