Abstract:
Objective:To explore nursing assistants' experience of caring for the aged with dementia in nursing homes. Methods:In September 2020, using the phenomenological research method, 13 nursing assistants for the aged from 3 different nursing homes in Beijing were selected through purpose sampling to conduct the semi-structured interview. The Colaizzi 7-step analysis method was used to organize the interview data. Results:A total of 7 themes were extracted, namely self-growth, sense of belonging to the team, sense of accomplishment, sense of being trusted and needed, disagreement with relatives and friends, low social status and negative emotions. Among them, the first 4 themes were positive factors, and the last 3 themes were negative factors, both of which affected the care experience of nursing assistants for the aged with dementia. Conclusions:Nursing assistants in nursing homes have both positive and negative experiences in caring for the aged with dementia. The government and institutional managers should provide nursing assistants with a lot of policy and social support, gradually improve their social status, work benefits and social support system, broaden their career development space, and continuously improve the sense of professional benefit and care quality of nursing assistants in nursing homes.
