Abstract:
As a chronic disease, chronic heart failure (CHF) affects millions of people globally, and causes considerable economic burden mainly resulting from frequent rehospitalisation (30-day readmission rate about 25%). Although tremendous amounts of health resources are spent on CHF management, the morbidity and mortality have not reduced in the recent decades, especially in rural areas where people experience poorer status due to socioeconomic disadvantages. However, limited related studies focus on this special population. Regarding the management of risk factors and CHF symptoms, rather than depending on healthcare givers, self-management is more crucial to reduce readmission and mortality. However, owing to the challenging situation in rural areas, rural patients encounter more barriers for effective self-management. This essay is to present the research status in self-management of rural patients with chronic heart failure, aiming to provide evidence for improving the self-management behavior of such patients.
