Abstract:
Objective To investigate the relationship between the levels of matrix metalloproteinases(MMP)-8 and tissus inhibitors of metalloproteinases (TIMP)-1 in gingival crevicular fluid (GCF)and periodontal disease. Methods Fourteen patients with chronic periodontitis,18 cases with marginal gingivitis and 16 subjects with normal gingiva were selected in this study. The level of MMP-8 and TIMP-1 was detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and compared among the three groups. Results The average concentrations of MMP-8 of control group, chronic marginal gingivitis group and chronic periodontitis group were (0.62 ± 0.09),(0.68 ± 0.02) and (0.78 ± 0.05 ) mg/L,respectively.The difference was significant among the three groups (P < 0.05 ).The average concentrations of TIMP-1 of the three groups were (3.55 ±0.93),(3.42 ± 1.49) and (2.88 ± 1.30) mg/L,respectively.There was no significant difference among the three groups ( P > 0.05 ).The MMP-8/TIMP-1 ratios of the three groups were 0.16 ±0.06,0.23 ±0.09 and 0.32 ±0.15,respectively.The difference was significant (P <0.05).Conclusions The MMP-8 level and MMP-8/TIMP-1 ratio can be considered as two valuable clinical indicators for periodontal tissue destruction and inflammation degree.
