- Abstract: ObjectiveExplore the clinical manifestation,neuro-imaging abnormalities,treatment and recovery of acute disseminated encephalomyelitis(ADEM). Methods The clinical features 13 cases of ADEM were analyzed retrospectively. Results 11 cases(84.6%)had history of prodromic infection and 2 cases(15.4%)had history of vaccination. Clinical manifestations varied as 10 cases(76.9%)with fever,11 cases(84.6%)with headache,9 cases(69.2%)with disturbance of consciousness,9 cases(69.2%)with dyskinesia,5 cases(38.5%) with epileptic seizure;4 cases(30.7%)with cranial nerve injury,4 cases(30.7%)with incoordination;5 cases(38.5%)with mental and behavior disorder. MRI showed multiple abnormalities in head and spinal. All of the patients received glucocorticoid or human immunoglobulin therapy or plasmapheresis. During the 6 months-10 years of follow-up,10(76.9%)cases completely recovered and 3(23.0%)cases kept neurological deficits. Conclusion Adult ADEM characterized by acute onset,various clinical manifestations,and good prognosis. Timely diagnosis and treatment is recommended.
