3.A method for the general medical practitioner in treating selected paranoid patients.
Journal of the Philippine Medical Association 0000;():0-
During the past 6 months, 28 patients, whose paranoid traits were their outstanding problems, were seen in an outpatient psychiatric clinic. Of these 28 patients, 11 were selected for a brief type of rapid fire psychotherapeutic treatment. 10 of these patients showed good to excellent responses. The reasons for this presentation of the therapy technique have been cited at the beginning of this paperAbstracts of 4 patients representative of the therapy group have been given along with the important details and ideas concerning the selection of the patient and the therapy technique. Since selection of the appropriate patient for therapy is one of the most important aspects of the specific therapy approach in this paper, a review of the areas of adequate stressed. All these patients voluntarily sought help because their life situation had become intolerable. Thus the motivation for change was strong. The one failure in therapy has been reviewed as it presented some of the important negative characteristics of patients who are not suitable for this brief therapy situationIt should be re-emphasized that this technique has not the slightest semblance of originality. All of the main elements such as selecting the patient, empathy, insight, reconditioning, and stimulation of motivation can be found in most forms of psychotherapy. The idea of conditioning associated with thought psychology was proposed by the German physician, Griesinger, the forerunner of Pavlov, in the Nineteenth century. My major motive behind the presentation of this paper has been to present an intelligible plan of therapy for the general medical physician to incorporate into his daily medical practice for suitable patients when adequate psychiatric help is not available.
