PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of geometrically different wax pattern shapes and sizes on the castability of Grade2 Cp-Ti (commercially pure titanium). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Total of 40 mesh wax pattern (61 mm x 24 mm, 207 grids), (61 mm x 17 mm, 138 grids) was cast in this experiment. Depending on the geometrical shape of the wax pattern, 8 groups was organized; Flat, Semicircular, Horse-shoe and V-shape, each consisting 5 samples. Runner-bar sprue was used in all patterns. The number of completely cast grid in wax pattern served as a measure for the castability of comercially pure titanium. RESULTS: The mean value of square count in each group was as followed; 133.20 squares in group SS (96.52%), 132.40 squares in group SH (95.94%), 132.00 squares in group SF (95.65%), 127.60 squares in SV (91.43%), 198.60 squares in group LF (95.94%), 197.80 squares in group LV (95.56%), 196.40 squares in group LS (94.88%), and 188.00 squares in group LH (90.82%). CONCLUSION: Within the limitations of this study the results indicate that there were no sttistically significant difference in castability of titanium regarding wax pattern shape (P>.05). However, Small size wax patterns were showing the noticeable castability more than Large size pattern.

The present study was performed to evaluate the effect of tetracycline-HCL on the change of implant surface microstructure according to application time. Implant with pure titanium machined surface, HA-coated surface and TiUniteTM surface were utilized. Implant surface was rubbed with 50mg/ml tetracycline-HCL solution for 1/2min., 1min., 1 1/2min., 2min., and 2 1/2min. respectively in the test group. Then, specimens were processed for scanning electron microscopic observation. The results of this study were as follows. 1. Both test and control group showed a few shallow grooves and ridges in pure titanium machined surface implants. There were not significant differences between two groups. 2. In HA-coated surfaces, round particles were deposited irregularly. The roughness of surfaces conditioned with tetracycline-HCL was lessened and the cracks were increased relative to the application time. 3. The anodic oxidized surfaces showed the craterous structures. The surface conditioning with tetracycline-HCl didn't influence on its micro-morphology. In conclusion, the detoxification with 50mg/ml tetracycline-HCL must be applied respectively with different time according to various implant surfaces.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to evaluate screw removal torque of the two-piece zirconia abutment with the novel titanium component compared to the conventional onepiece titanium abutment in the internal connection implant before and after dynamic cyclic loading. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Two types of the abutment assemblies with internal connection were prepared and divided into the groups; titanium abutment-titanium abutment screw assemblies as control, and zirconia abutment-titanium socket-titanium abutment screw assemblies as experimental group. A total of 12 abutments and implants were used of six assemblies each group. Each assembly was tightened to 30 Ncm. A cyclic load of 300 N at an angle of 30 degrees in reference to the loading axis was applied until one million cycles or failure. The removal torque values (RTVs) of the abutment screws were measured with a digital torque gauge before and after cyclic loading. The RTVs of the pre load and post load were analyzed with t-test, and P-values < .05 were considered statistically significant. RESULTS: The assemblies of both groups survived all after the dynamic cyclic loading test without screw loosening. The statistically significant differences were found between the mean RTVs before and after the cyclic loading in both groups (P < .05). The RTV differences for the control and the experimental group were -7.25 ± 1.50 Ncm and -7.33 ± 0.93 Ncm, respectively. Statistical analysis revealed that the RTV differences in both groups were not significantly different from each other (P > .05). CONCLUSION: Within the limitation of this study, the two-piece zirconia abutment with the titanium component did not show a significant RTV difference of the abutment screw compared to the titanium abutment after dynamic cyclic loading.

Implant surface was rubbed with 50mg/ml tetracycline-HCL solution for 1/2, 1, 1 1/2, 2 and 2 1/2min. respectively in the test group. Then, specimens were processed for scanning electron microscopic observation. The results of this study were as follows. 1. Both test and control group showed a few shallow grooves and ridges in pure titanium machined surface implants. There were not significant differences between two groups. 2. The double coated FBR(R) surfaces showed fine crystalline structures. The roughness of surfaces conditioned with tetracycline-HCL was lessened relative to the application time. 3. The oxidized CellNest surfaces showed the porous structures. The surface conditioning with tetracycline-HCl influenced on its micro-morphology. In conclusion, the detoxification of the affected implant surface with 50mg/ml tetracycline-HCL should be applied respectively with different time according to various implant surfaces.

In GBA surfaces, control group exhibit many porous depression, and each depression were divided by strict border. Experimental group applied with tetracycline-HCl for 2min. were similar with control group. But when applied for 2 1/2min. surface alteration and border breakdown started, resulting enlargement of the porous depression. 3. In RBM surface, control group exhibit rough, uneven surface with crater-like depression can be found. The surface alteration started when tetracycline-HCl was applied for 30sec. resulting breakdown of the crater-like depression. Depression became larger as applying time increased.

The purpose of this study was to compare the corrosion characteristics between implant fixture and two types of abutment screw; gold screw, titanium screw. The anodic polarization behavior, the galvanic corrosion behavior, and the crevice corrosion behavior of prepared samples were investigated using potentiostat and scanning electron microscope. The results were as follows : 1. Anodic polarization behavior of samples: The primary passivation potential of implant fixture was -420mV, implant abutment was -560mV, titanium screw was -370mV and gold screw was -230mV. All samples were shown to have a high corrosion potential and good formation of passive film. The critical passive current density of gold screw was higher than of other samples and the sample of gold screw showed a unstable passive film formation at passive region. 2. Galvanic corrosion behavior of samples: Contact current density between implant fixture and titanium screw showed 8.023x 10-5C/cm2. Contact current density between implant fixture and gold screw showed 5.142x 10-5C/cm2. 3. Crevice corrosion behavior of samples : The crevice corrosion resistance of sample using titanium screw was higher than that of sample using gold screw, and a severe corrosion morphologies were observed at the fixture-screw interface by the scanning electron microscope.
