We investigated 97 right-handed comprehensive patients with unilateral hemispheric lesion confirmed by computed tomogram, to evaluate the presence of neglect syndrome by using tests of visual neglect, auditory extinction, and somesthetic extinction. The results are as follows: 1.Neglect syndrome was noted in 38.8% of right hemispheric lesion and 25.6% of left hemispheric lesion, the frequency of neglect syndrome was higher in new lesion(less than 1 month) than old(over than 1 month) and the common locations of neglect syndrome were parieto-occipital, temporo-parietal, fronto-temporo-parietal, and parietal in that order. 2. The severity of neglect syndrome showed higher correlations with right hemispheric lesion and new lesion, but without any significant correlation with the location of lesion.

The anatomy and distribution of the superficial temporal vessels are known to follow regular patterns, with few exceptions in previous studies. But these previous studies of the anatomy and distribution of the superficial temporal vessels were based, only on the cadaver studies. Authors evaluated the anatomy of these vessels in the operative field of the living body from December 1997 to June 2001, The superficial temporal vessels were surgically exposed from the zygomatic arch extending to the superior temporal line through a preauricular incision in 18 patients(20 cases), who underwent reconstructive surgery using these vessels in the operative field. The authors measured and analyzed; the distribution, branching and diameters of the superficial temporal vessels. The results were obtained as follows; 1.In 19 cases, STV(superficial temporal vein) runs posterior to STA(superficial temporal artery) at the upper border of the zygomatic arch. 2.There was no frontal or parietal branches in 2 cases and vena comitante existed along with STA in one case. 3.The external diameter of STA and STV was measured at the lower border of the zygomatic arch. The external diameter of STA ranged from 1.5mm to 3.0 mm(average 2.1mm) and those of STV ranged from 1.3mm to 3.5mm (average 2.0mm). This study can be helpful in the reconstructive surgery using the superficial temporal vessels, for the results of our study are based on the true anatomy of the living body.

We report a case of torsion of a benign cyst arising from the parietal layer of the tunica vaginalis, which presented on an acute scrotum. Physical examination revealed a tender swelling of the left hemiscrotum. Surgical, we happened to find torsion of a cyst originating from the parietal layer of the tunica vaginalis. The pedicle of the cyst was twisted about 360 degrees.

Orbital hematoma is a condition not often encountered by the ophthalmologist. Trauma is the most common cause among the conditions caused to orbital hematoma. We have experienced a case of traumatic orbital hematoma with severe proptosis, visual deterioration, and limitation of EOM which was spread from parietal subperiosteal hemorrhage. It was managed efficiently by Hemo-vac application through transparietal route. We report this case with the review of the literatures.

BACKGROUND: Recently, the quantitative analysis of biological signals has been possible due to the development of digital machines, new mathematical theories including the nonlinear time series, chaotic and dynamic theories, and convenient statistical tools. The characteristics of biological signals however, can not analyzed solely through visual interpretation or judgement. The author statistically analyzed the EEG data of normal adults by using spectral analysis. METHODS: Quantitative EEG analysis was performed in 5 normal adults in order to analyze differences between the left and right hemispheres and interelectrode differences of the power spectrum of variable frequency bands. The results were statistically analyzed using SPSS. RESULTS: The spectral powers of the left frontal delta, the right parietal theta and left frontal alpha were significantly higher than the opposite sides. In the analysis of interelectrode difference, the tem-poral beta band power was significantly higher than the frontal areas. There were no significant interelectrode differ-ences in other frequency bands. CONCLUSIONS: The results of this study show that there are differences between the visually perceived EEG patterns and the frequency domain analysis. These findings suggest that EEG waves on record-ing papers are the results of interference among variable frequency bands. The continued analysis of EEG by using nonlinear parameters will be beneficial as a powerful tool in understanding the neural network dynamic in the brain.

This study was performed to observe the gross reactions of surrounding maxillary sutures to the widening of rnidpalatal suture in the dog. Three, healthy dog were chosen for the experiment. One animal was used as control, and two were used as experimental animals. Midpalatal suture was expanded total 7mm with screw for 10 days. The following results were obtained: 1. Midpalatal suture was expanded with the most width, in which anterior was be more expanded than the posterior, and shape was wedge form. 2. Interincisive suture was definitely expanded. 3. Internasal suture and interfrontal suture were slightly expanded. 4. Expansion of frontomaxillary suture, frontoparietal suture, frontonasal suture, zygomatico temporal suture, zygomatico frontal suture, zygomatico maxillary suture, occipito mastoid suture, occipito parietal suture, naso incisive suture, naso maxillary suture, and incisive maxillary suture were not observed.

OBJECTIVES: Standardization of head size is essential for the volume study. Cortical thickness analyses are increasingly being used in many fields of neuroscience. However, it is not established whether head size correction should be done for thickness study. METHODS: Using the Open Access Series of Imaging Studies data, we determined cortical thickness of 316 cognitively normal participants aged 18-94 with FreeSurfer. The association between head size and cortical thickness of whole cortical mantle and in each lobe among age tertile groups was assessed. Estimated total intracranial volume (eTIV) was calculated for determining head size. RESULTS: Across all participants, cortical thickness in whole brain except some areas in cingulate and insula decreased with aging. eTIV had positive correlation with the thickness of frontal, parietal, occipital and whole brain areas. However, the age effect was not shown in whole brain of the first tertile group and in cingulate areas of the third tertile group. eTIV had negative correlation with the thickness of cingulate in the third tertile group. Gender effects were shown in some areas in third tertile group, but it would be due to difference of head size. CONCLUSIONS: These findings suggest that head size standardization might be done especially in older population and in studies of paralimbic areas.
