Objective: This study aims to assess the correlation of ferritin serum level and PELOD-2 score, and determine the effectiveness of ferritin serum level as early indicator of organ dysfunction. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study carried out to pediatric patients with sepsis in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit Haji Adam Malik and Universitas Sumatera Utara hospital from June 2021 – January 2022. Complete blood work was done, and ferritin serum level and PELOD-2 score were measured on the first and third day of hospital stay of all the sixty participants aged 1-18 years old with sepsis. The correlation was measured using Spearman test, with p<0.05 indicating a significant correlation. Results: The median level of serum ferritin level was 480 (24.7 – 22652) ng/mL. There were 20% patients with ferritin level <200 ng/mL, 26.7% with ferritin level 200-500 ng/mL, and 53.3% patients with ferritin >500 ng/mL. The median score of PELOD-2 was 4. There was a significant correlation of serum ferritin and PELOD-2 score on day 1 of hospital stay. Conclusion The ferritin serum level is effective as an early indicator of organ dysfunction until PELOD-2 score is established. There is a positive correlation between serum ferritin and PELOD-2 score. There is a link between elevated ferritin and worse disease prognosis.

BACKGROUND: Chronic telogen effluvium is a common problem in middle-aged women. It has been suggested that reduced iron stores are a cause of this type of baldness. OBJECTIVE: We performed this study in order to elucidate the pathogenesis of chronic telogen effluvium and to evaluate the differences in serum stored iron levels between normal females and those with chronic telogen effluvium. METHODS: Blood levels of hemoglobin, iron, ferritin, and TIBC were examined in 20 patients with chronic telogen effluvium and 20 normal females. RESULT: 1) Ferritin levels were significantly decreased in the patients group(p=0.008). 2) TIBC levels were significantly increased in the patients group(p=0.001). 3) There were no significant differences in Hb and serum iron in both groups (p<0.05). CONCLUSION: These findings suggested that the variation of serum ferritin level may play a role in the pathogenesis of chronic telogen effluvium, but further studies will be needed for evaluation of this condition.

Study on 124 persons divided into 2 groups: the control group included 40 healthy persons (20 male, 20 female) and the case group included 84 patients with chronic renal failure at different stages. The mean age of 2 groups was similar. The diagnosis of chronic renal failure mostly depended on glomerular filtration rate <60 ml/minute and that lasted ≥6 months. Results: serum iron and ferritin concentrations of male and female in control group weren’t different significantly. 39.3% of patients decreased serum iron concentration, 60.7% of patients decreased serum similar to those of the control group. Compare 2 indexes of serum iron and serum ferritin by test X2 (X2=15.29; p<0.001), results showed that ferritin concentration decreased much more than serum iron. The rate of patients with low ferritin concentration was high (55.95%). Serum iron and ferritin concentrations of patients with chronic renal failure at stage IIIa, IIIb, IV decreased statistically in comparison with control group.
