OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to evaluate the color stability of bulk-fill and nanohybrid resin-based composites polished with 3 different, multistep, aluminum-oxide impregnated finishing and polishing disks. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Disk-shaped specimens (8 mm in diameter and 4 mm in thickness) were light-cured between two glass slabs using one nanohybid bulk-fill (Tetric EvoCeram, Ivoclar Vivadent), one micro-hybrid bulk-fill (Quixfil, Dentsply), and two nanohybrid incremental-fill (Filtek Ultimate, 3M ESPE; Herculite XRV Ultra, Kerr) resin-based composites, and aged by thermocycling (between 5 - 55℃, 3,000 cycles). Then, they were divided into subgroups according to the polishing procedure as SwissFlex (Coltène/Whaledent), Optidisc (Kerr), and Praxis TDV (TDV Dental) (n = 12 per subgroup). One surface of each specimen was left unpolished. All specimens were immersed in coffee solution at 37℃. The color differences (ΔE) were measured after 1 and 7 days of storage using a colorimeter based on CIE Lab system. The data were analyzed by univariate ANOVA, Mann-Whitney U test, and Friedmann tests (α = 0.05). RESULTS: Univariate ANOVA detected significant interactions between polishing procedure and composite resin and polishing procedure and storage time (p < 0.05). Significant color changes were detected after 1 day storage in coffee solution (p < 0.05), except Quixfil/Optidisc which was color-stable after 7 days (p > 0.05). Polishing reduced the discoloration resistance of Tetric EvoCeram/SwissFlex, Tetric EvoCeram/Praxis TDV, Quixfil-SwissFlex, and all Herculite XRV Ultra groups after 7 days storage (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Discoloration resistance of bulk-fill resin-based composites can be significantly affected by the polishing procedures.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the color stability of 4-methacryloxyethyl trimellitate anhydride (4-META) / methyl methacrylate (MMA) & tri-n-butylborane (TBB) resin with different powder-liquid (P/L) ratios and powder colors after immersion in coffee. Experimental groups (Bondfill SB) were classified by the P/L ratio (0.8:1 / 1:1 / 1.2:1, weight [wt] %) and color of the powder (light / medium). Light-cured resin composite (Filtek Z350 XT flowable) was used as a control group. Each disk-shaped specimen of 7 groups (n = 8 for color difference, n = 10 for translucency parameter [TP]) was immersed in a staining solution of coffee for 4 weeks. The color of the specimen was measured at the time of baseline, 1 day, 1 week, 2 weeks, 3 weeks, and 4 weeks with a spectrophotometer. The color difference (ΔE) and changes in translucency parameter (ΔTP) were statistically analyzed by one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), followed by Tukey's post-hoc test. Independent t-test was applied to evaluate the effect on the colors of the powder (α = 0.05). The values of color difference (ΔE) of the experimental groups were within the clinically acceptable threshold (ΔE < 3.3), whereas control group showed values over 3.3 after 1 week of immersion. The values of TP ranged from 9.58 to 13.28. The differences of TP (ΔTP) between baseline and 4 weeks were less than 1.0, except in the control group. Conclusively, self-cured resin composite showed excellent color stability in coffee for the period of this study regardless of different P/L ratios and powder colors.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the color stability of bulk-fill and conventional resin composites with respect to different storage media and thickness of composites.Filtek™ Z250 and Filtek™ Z350XT were evaluated as conventional resin composites. Filtek™ Bulk-fill Posterior Restorative and Tetric® N-Ceram Bulk Fill were evaluated as bulk-fill resin composites.CIE L*a*b* values of baseline were measured after 24 hours of storage in distilled water, and each resin composite group was divided into three subgroups and stored in distilled water, red wine, and coffee media respectively. Again after 1, 7 and 28 days of immersion, color changes (ΔE*) were calculated using the CIE L*a*b* values.The greatest ΔE* was observed in red wine for all resin composites, and the mean color changes were ranked in the increasing order of distilled water, coffee, red wine. Filtek™ Z350XT exhibited the greatest color change in all media, followed by Filtek™ Bulk-fill Posterior Restorative. Filtek™ Z250 and Tetric® N-Ceram Bulk Fill followed with similar mean color change values. According to the 2 different thicknesses of 2 mm and 4 mm of bulk-fill resin composites, there was no thickness-related difference on color changes.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of caffeine on balance control of hemiparetic stroke patients, we investigated the difference in postural stability before and after drinking coffee by observing changes in stability index (SI) from posturography. METHODS: Thirty patients with history of stroke and 15 age-matched healthy subjects participated in this study. Effect of group factor (of the control and stroke groups) and treatment factor (pre- and post-drinking of coffee) on SI were tested in three conditions: with eyes opened, with eyes closed, and with a pillow support. The effects of these factors on visual deprivation and somatosensory change of subjects were also tested. RESULTS: Under all conditions, SI was higher in the stroke group than in the control group. Under eyes-open condition, the treatment factor was not statistically significant. Under eyes-closed condition, the interaction between group and treatment factor was statistically significant. After the subjects drank coffee, SI in the control group was increased. However, SI in the stroke group was decreased. Under pillow-supported condition, the interaction between group and treatment factor appeared marginally significant. For visual deprivation effect, the interaction between treatment and group factor was statistically significant. After caffeine consumption, the visual deprivation effect was increased in control group but decreased in the stroke group. For somatosensory change effect, the interaction between group and treatment factor was not statistically significant. CONCLUSION: Postural stability of hemiparetic stroke patients related to somatosensory information was improved after intake of usual dose of caffeine.

Enema has been used to treat constipation. Injuries to colon and rectum during enema, whether mechanical, thermal, or chemical, can be life-threatening. Injudicious use of enema solutions not proven to be safe can also cause such injuries. We herewith report a case of colon injury caused by a coffee enema.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Direct denture reline resins tend to discolor during service in the oral environment by intrinsic and extrinsic factor. PURPOSE: This study was designed to evaluate the color stability of direct denture reline resins. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Mild Rebaron(GC Corp., Japan), Meta Base M(Sun medical Co., Japan), Mild Rebaron LC(GC Corp., Japan) and as a control group, Vertex SC(Dentimex Zeist, Holland) were chosen for this study. Ten specimens of each direct denture reline resins were fabricated. Treatment methods designed for this study were the coffee staining test(7days) and the accelerated aging test(100hours). The color changes before and after treatment were measured by Tristimulous colorimeter(Yasuda seiki seisakusho, Ltd. Japan) and analyzed. RESULTS: All the direct denture reline resins subjected to the coffee staining test and the accelerated aging test showed noticible difference in color change. After coffee staining test, Meta Base M showed the highest color change followed by Vertex SC, Mild Rebaron LC and Mild Rebaron. There were no statistical differences between Meta Base M and Vertex SC and between Mild Rebaron LC and Mild Rebaron(p>0.05). After accelerated aging test, Mild Rebaron LC showed the highest color change followed by Vertex SC, Meta Base M and Mild Rebaron. There were no statistical differences only between Mild Rebaron and Mata Base M(p>0.05) but among the others, there were statistical differences(p<0.05). CONCLUSION: Within the limitation of this study, all the direct denture reline resins subjected to the extrinsic and intrinsic factors showed noticible difference in color change, and there were differences among manufacturers.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the color stability of composite resins used widely as esthetic restorative material.Surefil(Dentsply,U.S.A.),Esthet X(Dentsply,U.S.A.),Filtek P60(3M,U.S.A.),Filtek Z250(3M,U.S.A.),Synergy Compact(Coltene,Switzerland),and Synergy Duo(Coltene,Switzerland)were chosen for this study.Thirty six specimens(7mm x2mm) of each composite resin were fabricated and polished after polymerization.Treatment conditions designed for this study were thermocycling,methylene blue staining,and filtered coffee staining. The color changes before and after treatment were measured by colorimeter(colorimeter,Model Tc-6Fx,Tokyo Denshoku Co.)and analyzed. The followings were drawn from this study: 1.The color changes of Filtek Z250,Surefil,Filtek P60 and Esthet X after thermocycling for 3 weeks were greater than those of the others. 2.The color changes of Surefil and Esthet X after methylene blue staining and those of Surefil, Filtek Z250 and Filtek P60 after coffee staining were great. 3.The color changes of Synergy Duo and Synergy Compact after thermocycling and coffee staining were relatively lesser than those of other composite resins.
