OBJECTIVEThe aim of this study was to observed the influence of deposition time on chromatics during nitrogen-doped diamond like carbon coating (N-DLC) on pure titanium by multi impulse are plasma plating machine.

METHODSApplying multi impulse are plasma plating machine to produce TiN coatings on pure titanium in nitrogen atmosphere, then filming with nitrogen-doped DLC on TiN in methane (10-80 min in every 5 min). The colors of N-DLC were evaluated in the CIE1976 L*a*b* uniform color scale and Mussell notation. The surface morphology of every specimen was analyzed using scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS).

RESULTSWhen changing the time of N-DLC coating deposition, N-DLC surface showed different color. Golden yellow was presented when deposition time was 30 min. SEM showed that crystallization was found in N-DLC coatings, the structure changed from stable to clutter by varying the deposition time.

CONCLUSIONThe chromatics of N-DLC coatings on pure titanium could get golden yellow when deposition time was 30 min, then the crystallized structure was stable.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: It is difficult about assessing the loosening tendency of conical connection type implant after cyclic loading with diamond like carbon coating one-piece abutments, and also about the retightening effect. PURPOSE: This study was performed to investigate the influence of one-piece abutment screw retightening after 5.0X10(4) cyclic loading and Diamond like coating MATERIAL AND METHODS: Thirty two ITI implant were divided to 4 groups. Group 1,3-titanium abutment, group 2,4 - diamond like carbon coated abutment. Group 1,2 - 20.0X10(4) cyclic loading after 5.0X10(4) cyclic loading, Group 3,4- after 20.0X10(4) Cyclic loading. After cyclic loading, periotest values were taken and removal torque values of abutments were measured with a digital torque gauge. RESULTS: 1. The removal torque of group 2 after 5.0X10(4) cyclic loading is slightly greater than the other groups but not significantly higher than others (P>0.05). 2. The final removal torque values after 20.0X10(4) cyclic loading of group 1 is bigger than group 3, and group 2 is bigger than group 4, but not significantly higher (P>0.05). 3. The final removal torque values after 20.0X10(4) cyclic loading of all groups are not significantly different (P>0.05).

In recent years, multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCTs) are very favorable to the adsorption of middle molecular substances in the hemoperfusion because of their multiporous structure, large surface area and high reactivity, which are beneficial to the excellent absorption properties. The purpose of this study was to study the MWCTs on the adsorption capacity of the middle molecular substances. Vitamin B12 (VB12) was selected as a model of the middle molecular substances. The morphologies of MWCTs and activated carbon from commercial "carbon kidney" were observed with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The adsorption behavior of VB12 was compared to each other with UV-visible absorption spectra. The MWCTs formed a sophistaicate gap structure, and compared to the activated carbon, MWCTs had a larger surface area. By Langmuir equation and Freundlich equation fitting analysis, VB12 adsorption on MWCTs is fit for multi-molecular layer adsorption, and the adsorption type of activated carbon is more inclined to the model corresponding to Langmuir monolayer adsorption. The adsorption rate of MWCTs is faster than that of the activated carbon and the adsorption capacity is greater, which could be expected to become the new adsorbent in the hemoperfusion.

OBJECTIVES: In this study, the effect of tube length and outer diameter (OD) size of hydroxylated-multi walled carbon nanotubes (OH-MWCNTs) on their uptake and toxicity was investigated in the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans using a functional mutant analysis. METHODS: The physicochemical properties of three different OH-MWCNTs were characterized. Uptake and toxicity were subsequently investigated on C. elegans exposed to MWCNTs with different ODs and tube lengths. RESULTS: The results of mutant analysis suggest that ingestion is the main route of MWCNTs uptake. We found that OH-MWCNTs with smaller ODs were more toxic than those with larger ODs, and OH-MWCNTs with shorter tube lengths were more toxic than longer counterparts to C. elegans. CONCLUSIONS: Overall the results suggest the aspect ratio affects the toxicity of MWCNTs in C. elegans. Further thorough study on the relationship between physicochemical properties and toxicity needs to be conducted for more comprehensive understanding of the uptake and toxicity of MWCNTs.

In order to clarify the mechanism of blood coagulation for carbonaceous biomaterials, the plasma rich in platelet was obtaining through the centrifugation of fresh human blood containing anticoagulant. Adhesive tests of platelets to surfaces of DLC, diamond film(DF) and graphite was carried out at 37 degrees C. Then, morphology observation, counting and deformation index calculation of the platelets adhering to surfaces of the three kinds of materials were analyzed by SEM. It has been shown that there is no any platelet on the surface of DLC, but on DF and graphite, a lot of platelets are observed with serious deformation of type III-V. The adhesive amounts of platelet on the surface of graphite are more than those on DF, but deformation index of platelets on the surface of DF is more than that on graphite. Three major conclusions have been obtained through comparative analyses with our previous researches and related literatures: (1) Adhesion, deformation and collection of platelets occurred in succession on material surfaces resulting from protein adsorption are the major mechanism of blood coagulation of carbonaceous materials; (2) Deformation degree of platelets is more important hemocompatibility index than consumption ratio of platelets for carbonaceous materials; (3) The purer the DLC, the better is the hemocompatibility. These conclusions possess important directive function for improving and designing carbonaceous materials used in artificial mechanical heart valves.

In order to evaluate diamond like carbon film (DLC), DLC containing Si, graphite, diamond film (DF), low temperature isotropic carbon film (LTIC) and SiC, we investigated the correlations between surface energy parameters and hemocompatibility indices such as kinetic clotting time, hemolysis and platelet consumption. An analysis of T-type correlation degree in the Grey system theory was performed. The results showed: (1) all of correlation degrees between kinetic clotting time and polar surface energy parameters were positive, but for critical surface tension, the correlation degree was negative; among five of surface energy parameters, interface tension had the highest relation degree (0.63) with kinetic clotting time, and critical surface tension (-0.43) took the second place; (2) on the contrary, all of correlation degrees between hemolysis and polar surface energy parameters were negative, but for critical surface tension, the correlation degree was positive; and that which had closer correlations with hemolysis were still interface tension (-0.43) and critical surface tension (0.29); (3) critical surface tension had the highest relation degree (0.68) with platelet consumption, and surface tension (0.32) took the second place; (4) kinetic clotting time possessed higher negative correlation degrees with hemolysis (-0.57) and platelet consumption (-0.36). These data indicate that kinetic clotting time depended on a balance between the polarity of surface and the limited humidifying of water on the surface, and that platelet consumption was based on good humidification and power polarity of surface, while hemolysis was promoted by the aid of chromatic dispersion action stemming from the surface and fully humidifying of water on the surface. There was "seesaw effect" between kinetic clotting time and hemolysis or platelet consumption, hence the hemocompatibility of carbonaceous biomaterials could be equivalently evaluated by using kinetic clotting time as an index. It has been confirmed: (1) successive occurrences, including adhesion, deformation and collection of platelets on the material surfaces as results of protein adsorption, are the major mechanism of blood coagulation of carbonaceous materials; (2) the hemocompatibility of carbonaceous biomaterials can be evaluated by using critical surface tension as an index. These findings may underpin the hemocompatibility evaluation of carbonaceous biomaterials based on surface properties.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Implant screw loosening remains a problem in implant prosthodontics. Some abutment screws with treated surfaces were introduced to prevent screw loosening and to increase preload. DLC(Diamond Like Carbon) film has similar properties on hardness, wear resistance, chemical stability, biocompatibility as real diamond materials. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of lubricant layer on abutment screw and to discriminate more effective method between soft lubricant and hard lubricant to prevent screw loosening. MATERIAL AND METHOD: In this study, 1mum thickness DLC was used as protective, lubricating layer of titanium screws and 3 times removal torque was measured on the abutment screws to investigate the difference in 10 coated and 10 non-coated abutment screws. RESULTS: The results indicated that the implants with DLC coating group were not more resistant to the applied force in screw loosening. At 32Ncm, the 3 times removal torque in DLC group were 27.7+/-2.89, 25.85+/-2.35 and 26.2+/-2.57. The removal torque in no-coated abutment screws were 27.85+/-4.23, 27.35+/-2.81 and 27.9+/-2.31, respectively. CONCLUSION: The lubricant layer used in this study was Diamond Like Carbon(DLC) and it have a properties of hard and stable layer. The DLC coating layer was hard enough to prevent distortion of screws in the repeated unscrewing procedure in clinical situation. The reduced friction coefficient in hard DLC layer was not effective to prevent screw loosening.
