International Eye Science 2016;16(7):1350-1352
AIM: To analyze the effect factors of trabeculectomy combined with intraoperative application of mitomycin C in the treatment of neovascular glaucoma.
METHODS: Fifty patients (50 eyes) with neovascular glaucoma collected from January 2013 to August 2015 in our hospital were treated by trabeculectomy combined with intraoperative application of mitomycin C. Single factor and multi factor variables analysis were used for effect factors of trabeculectomy combined with intraoperative application of mitomycin C in the treatment of neovascular glaucoma.
RESULTS: By results of single factor variable analysis,< 50 years old, preoperative intraocular pressure ( IOP) was ≥45mmHg and postoperative occurrence of anterior chamber hemorrhage were risk factors for treatment failure ( P < 0. 05 ), and gender, proliferative diabetic retinopathy and previous cataract surgery and prior photocoagulation were not the risk factors for failure (P>0. 05 ). By multivariate analysis, < 50 years old and postoperative occurrence of anterior chamber hemorrhage were risk factors for treatment failure ( P < 0. 05 ), and preoperative IOP≥45mmHg was not a risk factor (P>0.05). CONCLUSION: For patients < 50 years old with neovascular glaucoma, should be careful on the selection of surgical treatment. For high- risk patients, we should strengthen the monitoring and give timely intervention, which are helpful to improve the prognosis.

This retrospective analysis compared standard regimen of doxorubicin, bleomycin, vinblastine, and dacarbazine (ABVD) with the dose-dense ABVD regimen (ABVD-21) in terms of efficacy and toxicity. Patients who had early-stage unfavorable or advanced Hodgkin's lymphoma (HL) according to German Hodgkin Study Group criteria from March 1999 to February 2011 were analyzed for treatment response, long-term survival and hematological toxicity. There were 85 patients in the ABVD-21 group and 118 patients in the ABVD group respectively. The complete remission rates after completion of treatment were 92.9% and 90.7% for ABVD-21 and ABVD, respectively. During a median follow-up period of 62 months, no significant difference was found in projected 10-year progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) rates (84.7% and 94.1% respectively for ABVD-21; 81.4% and 91.5% for ABVD). Subgroup analyses showed that ABVD-21 was significantly better than ABVD for patients with IPS≥3 in terms of PFS and OS rates. Grade 3 to 4 leukopenia (51.8% vs. 28.8%, P=0.001) and neutropenia (57.6% vs. 39.0%, P=0.009) were more common with ABVD-21. We were led to conclude that dose-dense ABVD did not result in better tumor control and overall survival than did ABVD for early-stage unfavorable HL. However, patients at high risk, for example, with IPS≥3, may benefit from dose-dense ABVD.

OBJECTIVETo explore the antitumoral effect of indirubin on androgen-independent prostate cancer PC-3 cells and its possible mechanisms.
METHODSWe measured the inhibitory effect of indirubin on the proliferation of prostate cancer PC-3 cells using MTT assay, detected their cell cycles by flow cytometry, and determined the expressions of the cell cycle regulatory protein cyclin D1 and its related downstream gene c-myc by Western blot.
RESULTSThe viability of the PC-3 cells was significantly decreased by indirubin in a concentration-dependent manner, reduced to 52. 2% and 13. 6% at 5 and 10 µmol/L, respectively. The cell cycle of the PC-3 cells was markedly inhibited by indirubin at 5 µmol/L, with the cells remarkably increased in the G0 and G1 phases and decreased in the S and G2/M phases. Meanwhile, indirubin also inhibited the expressions of cyclin D1 and c-myc in the Wnt signaling pathway.
CONCLUSIONIndirubin can suppress the proliferation of androgen-independent prostate cancer PC-3 cells, which may be associated with its inhibitory effect on the cell cycle and Wnt signaling pathway.

OBJECTIVETo evaluate the impact and long-term effect of three prescriptions regulating and tonifying lung and kidney (prescription tonifying lung and spleen, prescription tonifying lung and kidney, and prescription tonifying Qi and kidney) on JAK/STAT signaling of COPD rats.
METHODRats were randomly divided into the control group, the model group, the Bufeijianpi group, the Bufeiyishen group, the Yiqizishen group and the aminophyline group. The COPD rat model was established by smoke inhalations and bacterial infections. In the 9th week, the control group and the model group were administered with normal saline, while the remaining groups are orally given corresponding medicines. In the 20th and 32nd week, the rats were sacrificed in batches to observe the pathology in their lung tissues, protein expressions of JAK2, STAT1, STAT3, STAT5, and expressions of JAK2 and SOCS3 mRNA.
RESULTIn the 20th and 32nd week, protein expressions of JAK2 mRNA and phosphorylation-JAK2, STAT1, STAT3 and STAT5 in the model group were higher than the control group (P < 0.01), whereas the three traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) (Bufeijianpi, Bufeiyishen and Yiqizishen) groups and the aminophyline group were significantly lower (P < 0.05, P < 0.01). The expression of SOCS3 mRNA in the model group was higher than the control group (P < 0.01), whereas the level was notably higher in the three TCM groups and the aminophylline group (P < 0.01). The three TCM groups were remarkably higher than the aminophylline group (P < 0.05, P < 0.01). Compared with the figures in the 20th week, JAK2 mRNA and phosphorylation-JAK2, STAT3 and STAT5 were significantly lower in the Bufeijianpi group in the 32nd week (P < 0.05, P < 0.01), and so did phosphorylation-STAT3 in Bufeiyishen group (P < 0.01) and phosphorylation-STAT3 and STAT5 in the Yiqizishen group (P < 0.05, P < 0.01). However, the aminophylline group showed no significant difference in above indicators.
CONCLUSIONThe three medicines regulating and tonifying lung and kidney can effectively relieve injury of lung tissues, and have long-term effect, which may be related to the regulation of JAK/ STAT signaling. Specifically, prescription tonifying lung and spleen shows good effect in reducing JAK2, STAT3 and STAT5, prescription tonifying lung and kidney shows good effect in reducing p-STAT3, and prescription tonifying Qi and kidney shows good effect in reducing p-STAT3 and p-STAT5.

Angiogenesis inhibitors can make tumor cells in a harsh environment by inhibiting tumor angiogenesis and effectively blocking the tumor progression.However,anti-angiogenic drugs have shown lots of limitations, such as short-term duration, numerous adverse reactions, benefiting only a minority of tumor types and so on.These limitations restrain the development of new drugs and limit the cancer therapies. Many studies have revealed that tumor cells can escape from anti-angiogenic treatments through a variety of ways and mechanisms. In this review,we focus on the reasons behind the failure in treatments,so as to propose solving strategies to improve the current anti-angiogenic drug efficacy and provide reference for new angiogenesis inhibitors and clinical medication.

OBJECTIVETo assess the effect of the maximal androgen blockade(MAB) and MAB combined with 125I brachytherapy on prostatic cancer.
METHODSForty-four patients with prostatic cancer (from 1993 to 2002), 28 at pathologic stage C and 16 at stage D, were analyzed retrospectively. Thirty-five of them were treated by bilateral orchidectomy and anti-androgen drugs, i.e. MAB, and 9 treated by MAB combined with 125I brachytherapy. The survival rates and the variation of serum prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels between pre- and post-treatment were compared.
RESULTSThe level of PSA decreased from 60.3 micrograms/L to 12.1 micrograms/L in 35 patients treated by MAB, and from 72.1 micrograms/L to 3.6 micrograms/L in 9 patients treated by MAB combined with 125I brachytherapy after 6 months. The post-treatment survival rates were 81.3% (26/32, excluding 3 deaths by other diseases) for patients treated by MAB after a mean follow-up of 39.2 (9-84) months and 100% for patients by MAB combined with 125I brachytherapy after a mean follow-up of 13(7-24) months.
CONCLUSIONMAB and MAB combined with 125I brachytherapy are effective for patients with prostatic cancer.

China Journal of Chinese Materia Medica 2005;30(18):1406-1408
This paper reiviewed the current situation of quality control of grape seed extract in domestic and international market. Considering the fact that there is no national or industrial technical specifications established for the extract product, the authors suggested that two sets of quality specifications should be established for the grape seed extract. The two sets of specifications are: the high purity grape seed extract should contain polyphenol NLT 95%, monomer NLT 10%; and the grape seed extract with ordinary quality should have a procyanidolic value NLT 95, and monomer NLT 6%.

Objective To understand the mycoplasma pneumoniae(MP) infection degree in community children by testing specific IgM antibodies against MP in different age bracket group in Shanghai Meilong area. Methods Using random sampling method, blood specimens of 1 817 children from kindergartens and primary or junior high schools in Meilong area were obtained. Children were from 2 to 15 years old, 969 males, 848 females. The specimens were tested for IgM antibodies against MP using with gelatin particle agglutination test. The data were statistically analyzed using with ?2 test. Results Five hundred and fifty-nine (30.7%) IgM antibodies against MP were positive from 1 817 blood specimens. The positive percentages were 27.34% and 34.66% for males and females, which had significant difference(?2=11.383 P=0.001). The higher percentage was detected from kindergarten children than primary and junior high school children(P=0). The positive percentages of anti-mycoplasma IgM had no significant differences between different kindergartens and primary schools(P=0.526,0.232). On the contrary, between different junior high schools, there were siginificant differences (?2=9.825 P=0.002). Conclusions MP is an important pathogenic mycoplasma cause for respiratory tract infections in Meilong area. It is relative to childhood asthma. The prevention and cure of MP infection for children shall be paid more attention.
