ObjectiveTo undertake a controlled, prospective study to investigate the relationship between serum resistin level and blood sugar, blood lipids and thyroid hormone in patients with hyperthyroidism. Methods Clinical data of 50 patients with hyperthyriodism were collected from 2008 to 2009 in department of endocrinology the Second Hospital of Harbin Medical University. All patients were newly diagnosed cases that received no medication. At the same time, 40 healthy persons underwent physical examination in the hospital were taken as control group. Diabetes, obesity, hypertension, and high cholesterol were excluded from the two groups. Serum resistin level was determined using ELISA method. Chemiluminescence was used to check the levels of fasting insulin, free triiodothyronine (FT3), free thyroxin (FT4), and thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH). Glucose oxidase method determination-peroxidase-anti-peroxidase(GOD-PAP) was used to check the levels of fasting blood-glucose.Cholesterol oxidase method was used to check the levels of total cholesterol(T-CH). Glycerol-phosphate oxidase was used to check the levels of triglyceride(TG). Enzymes colorimetric method was used to check high density level of lipoprotein cholesterol(HDL-C) and low density level of lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), and the height, weight,waist circumference, and hip circumference were measured. Body mass index (BMI) and insulin resistance index (HOMA-IR) were calculated. Groups were compared using t test and correlation analysis using Pearson correlation test, and the relationship between serum resistin level and blood sugar, blood lipids and thyroid hormone were analyzed using multiple linear stepwise regression analysis method. Results Serum glucose[(5.2 ± 0.7)mmol/L],resistin concentrations[(132.1 ± 41.3)μg/L], FT3[(19.8 ± 8.7) pmol/L], FT4[(54.1± 29.6)pmol/L], fasting insulin levels[(7.9 ± 2.8)mU/L] and HOMA-IR(2.3 ± 1.0) were significantly higher compared with controls group [(4.7 ± 0.5)mmol/L, (65.1 ± 5.9)μg/L, (4.1 ± 0.6)pmol/L, (14.3 ± 2.2)pmol/L, (6.4 ± 2.7)mU/L, (1.5 ±1.2); t =4.64, 10.17, 11.42, 8.49, 4.48, 9.42, P＜ 0.01 or ＜ 0.05)]. T-CH[(3.7 ± 0.8) mol/L], LDL-C[(1.8 ±0.6)mol/L], TSH[(0.01 ± 0.01 )mU/L] were significantly lower compared with controls group[(4.6 ± 0.7)mol/L,(2.3 ± 0.7)mol/L, (1.80 ± 0.90)mU/L; t =5.30, 3.33, 14.48; all P＜ 0.01)]. Pearson correlation analysis showed that resistin and FT3, FT4 and HOMA-IR was positively correlated, respectively (r =0.719, 0.790, 0.396, P ＜ 0.01or＜ 0.05), resistin and T-CH and LDL was negatively correlated, respectively(r =- 0.364, - 0.519, P ＜ 0.05or ＜ 0.01). Multiple linear regression analysisshowed that resistin and FT3, FT4, and HOMA-IR was positively correlated, respeetively(r =0.756, P ＜ 0.01 ). Conclusion Resistin and FT3 and FT4 are related. Resistin might play important roles in insulin resistance and glucose and lipid metabolism disorders in patients with hyperthyriodism.

Objective To investigate ultrasonography imaging feature of intravenous leiomyomatosis (IVL).Methods Analysing 34 cases of IVL retrospectively,which had been treated and diagnosed in the hospital from Jan,1998 to Dec,2003.Results Among 34 cases,2 cases were diagnosed as IVL,20 cases were diagnosed as uterine leiomyoma or uterine leiomyoma with degeneration and 12 cases as uterine leiomyoma with adenomyosis.Conclusions Knowledge shortage on the clinical feature of IVL causes the low rate of accurate diagnosis of IVL by ultrasonography imaging.

Macrophages play an important role in the pathogenesis of many diseases because of its plasticity and diversity.The Notch signaling pathway is a key regulator of the biological function of macrophage and has a complex network connection with many other signaling pathways.This paper reviews the conduction of Notch signaling pathway and its regulation on the polarization of macro-phages.

ObjectiveTo assess the value of the Beijing version of Montreal Cognitive Assessment ( MoCA) in community dwelling older adults residing in Shenyang,China.MethodsThe stratified random sampling method was used to investigate the population over 60 years old in 4 communities of Shenyang in the year 2011.Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) and the Beijing version of MoCA were administered to all participants.258 old people finished the assessment.ResultsThe internal consistency of the MoCA Beijing version was good,yielding a Cronbach alpha of 0.836.The correlation between the MoCA Beijing version and the MMSE was good(r=0.623,P＜0.001 ).Only 15.1％ participants had an education of over 12 years,but 26.3％ participants had an education of 6 years or less.Only 3 items of MoCA Beijing version ( naming lion,forward digit span,recall daisy)showednosignificantdifferencebetweenpersonswithandwithoutover 6yearsofeducation.ConclusionsThe results indicates that the Beijing version of MoCA have good reliability and validity.This study shows that an education of 6 years or less might be the proper population to add the one point in China,and the cutoff-point of 26 for normal is too high for Chinese population.

Objective To evaluate the significance of fiberoptic bronchoscopic brush cytology in the diagnosis and histological classification of lung carcinoma.Methods Data of 309 patients with lung carcinoma were retrospectively analyzed.Both bronchoscopic cytology and histology diagnosis were available.The positive rate of bronchoscopic cytology and tissue biopsy were calculated respectively.The classification accuracy of cytological diagnosis for lung carcinoma was evaluated.In tissue biopsy standard,evaluated the significance of bronchoscopic cytology in diagnosis and histological diagnosis.Results The positive rate of bronchoscopic cytology and tissue biopsy were 86.1％ (266/309) and 83.8％ (259/309),respectively.Bronchoscopic cytology combined with bronchial biopsy could obviously improve the positive rate to 94.2％ (291/309) in lung carcinoma diagnosis.Taking the tissue biopsy histological type as a standard,the cytotyping accuracy for brush method was 85.1％(74/87) in squamous carcinoma,82.4％(108/131) in adenocarcinoma and 100％(11/11) in small cell carcinoma for higher.However,the accuracy in diagnosing poorly differentiated carcinomas was only 12.2％ (5/ 41).Conclusion Fiberoptic bronchoscopic brush cytology plays an stable and important role in diagnosing lung carcinomas and histological type determination.However,it has limited use in diagnosing poorly differentiated carcinomas.

Objective To investigate the relationship between carotid atherosclerotic plaque and multiple risk factors of angiocardiopathy,and to evaluate the injuries caused by different risk factors to subclinical target organ to control the general risk factors of angiocardiopathy.Methods Four hundred and twenty six outpatients and impatients,treated in our hospital from May 2007 to May 2009 with the results of color ultrasonic examination,were divided into carotid atherosclerotic plaque group(284 cases) and no carotid atherosclerotic plaque group( 142 cases).The clinical information including their age,body mass index,smoking condition,past medical history such as hypertension,diabetes mellitus and hyperlipoidemia were recorded,and the levels of total cholesterol(T C),high density lipoprotein cholesterol( HDL-C),low density lipoprotein cholesterol(LDL-C),triglyceride (TG),lipoprotein ( a ) ( LP (a) ),apolipoprotein A - 1 ( Apo A 1 ),apolipoprotein B ( Apo B ),highsensitivity C-reactive protein( hs-CRP),homocysteine ( HCY),microalbuminuria( MAU ) and uricacid(UA) were determined by lab tests.The independent variable and univariable data were processed and analyzed statistically to find out the risk factors of carotid atherosclerotic plaque.Results Age and drinking were significantly correlated with the carotid intima-media wall thickening(IMT) (P ＜ 0.001 ).Overweight,diabetes mellitus,increased LP (a),hyperlipoidemia,age,increased MAU and HCY could independently predict carotid atherosclerosis and plaque formation ( x2 =71.35,38.45,t =3.26,x2 =37.23,t =118.51,6.723 and 3.17respectively,Ps ＜ 0.05 ).The aggregated number of the risk factors was correlated to IMT and carotid atherosclerotic plaque ( P =0.0001 ).Conclusion Age,drinking,overweight,diabetes mellitus,increased LP (a),hyperlipoidemia,MAU and HCY are risk factors of carotid atherosclerosis and plaque formation,and the contribution of each factor can multiply and overlap,more risk factors means greater risk.

Objective To investigate the effects of heat-killed Staphylococcus aureus (HKSA) on the apoptosis and expression of iNOS and IL-1β in THP-1 monocytes in the presence of high concentration of glucose.Methods THP-1 cells were cultured in medium containing 25.0 mmol/L(HG) or 5.5 mmol/L (LG,control) D-glucose for 12 h-8 d.The THP-1 cells cultured for 6 d were extracted on the 0-48 h with or without HKSA,then apoptosis and expression of iNOS and IL-1β were examined.Apoptosis was analyzed by flow cytometry and expressions of IL-1β and iNOS were quantitated by real-time PCR.Results The expression of iNOS and IL-1β in THP-1 monocytes was increased significantly in the presence of high concentration of glucose for 12-48 h(P＜0.05),reaching the highest level at 24 h and returned to baseline after 4 d.The expression was significantly lower than that of control after 4-6 d.Apoptosis rate was also increased significantly after 48 h to 4 days.HKSA infection enhanced apoptosis,but inhibited the expression of iNOS and IL-1 β in the presence of high concentration of glucose.The expression of iNOS and IL-1β increased significantly at 6 h(P＜0.01),reaching the highest level at 12 h,but the levels were significantly lower than those in control groups (P＜0.05).Conclusion These data suggest that high concentration of glucose can interfere with the anti-bacterial function of monocytes by reducing their expression of iNOS and IL-1β and enhancing their apoptosis.

Endothelial to mesenchymal transition(EndMT) plays a major role during organism development, and also contributes to several adult cardiovascular diseases.EndMT-derived fibroblast-like cells are common in atherosclerotic lesions.Pro-atherosclerosis factors, such as oxidative stress, hypoxia, inflammatory cytokines and oscillatory fluid shear stress can promote EndMT.EndMT is closely associated with plaque calcification, and unstable and ruptured plaque phenotype that may prone to cause clinical events.EndMT may be another key step in the prevention and treatment of atherosclerosis.Here, we reviewed the role played by endothelial-to-mesenchymal transition(EndMT) and its key regulators in atherosclerosis.
