Objective The experiment was designed to observe the effect of inhaled arsenic trioxide(As2O3)and in combination with inhaled moxa leaf oil on eosinophils(EOS)and lung tissue's morphology in asthmatic guinea pigs, and to explore its mechanism of relieving wheezing. Methods The ovalbumin(OVA)-induced asthmatic guinea pig model was established. Sixty guinea pigs were randomly divided into As2O3 atomization inhalation group B1 As2O3 low dose group:2.0 mg/(kg·d), B2 As2O3 high dose group:4.0 mg/(kg·d), combined treatment group C1 low dose group:2.0 mg/(kg·d)+moxa leaf oil 0.05 ml, C2 high dose group: 4.0 mg/(kg·d)+moxa leaf oil 0.10 ml, saline aerosol inhalation group(group A) asthma model group)and normal control group(group D)according to random permutation table method. After 7 days medicated, the EOS in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid(BALF)were compared. Guinea pig lung, heart, liver and kidney pathological specimens were prepared and the change of the lung tissue's inflammation and heart, liver and kidney tissue were investigated. Lung tissue’s electron microscopy specimens were prepared and the apoptosis of acidophilic cells and repair of alveolar epithelial cells were observed. Results Compared with asthma model group's EOS number[(58.08±19.01)×105], the difference in As2O3 low dose group、As2O3 high dose group、combined treatment low dose group、combined treatment high dose group and normal control group[(26.37±1.12)×105, (11.50±1.61)×105, (14.16±4.88)×105, (5.03±1.66)×105 and(0.35±0.16)×105, respectively] were statistically significant(P<0.01); there was statistical difference between As2O3 low dose group and As2O3 high dose group(P<0.01);There was statistical difference between As2O3 low dose group and combined treatment low dose group(P<0.01);There was statistical difference between As2O3 high dose group and combined treatment high dose group(P<0.05). Compared with combined treatment high dose group, difference in As2O3 low dose group、As2O3 high dose group and combined treatment low dose group was statistically significant(P<0.05). The difference in B1, B2, C1, C2 and D group was statistically significant compared with group A (P<0.01). The difference in B1 and B2, B1 and C1 group was statistically significant (P<0.01). The difference between B2 and C2 group was statistically significant(P<0.05). The difference in C2 group was statistically significant compared with group B1, B2 and C1(P<0.05). Conclusion EOS abnormal apoptosis was an important pathogenesis of bronchial asthma. The mechanism of arsenic trioxide anti-asthma was that arsenic trioxide could reduce acidophil infiltration and promote acidophilic cell apoptosis. The mechanism of moxa leaf oil anti-asthma was it could reduce acidophil infiltration. Smaller doses of the combination of inhaled As2O3 and moxa leaf oil was safe and effective to achieve the effect of relieving wheezing and the combined use had synergy.

AIM:To observe the effects of Dickkopf-3 ( Dkk-3 ) in diabetic retinopathy ( DR ) circulating blood in patients with the expression level, the Dkk - 3 development changes in the diabetic retinopathy of significance in the diagnosis of early DR.
● METHODS: Eighty - five type 2 diabetic patients, included the non - proliferative diabetic retinopathy ( NPDR ) 23 patients, proliferative diabetic retinopathy, proliferative DR ( PDR ) in patients with 30 and non-diabetic retinopathy ( NDR ) with 32 cases. The same period of healthy physical examination was selected as control group ( 80 cases ) . Serum samples were collected, and the relative expression level of Dkk-3 was detected by enzyme - linked immunosorbent assay ( ELlSA) double antibody sandwich assay. The statistical differences were compared between groups.
●RESULTS: The plasma level of Dkk - 3 ( 430. 16 ± 198. 11pg/mL) in DR patients was significantly lower than that in healthy control group (627. 48±294. 45 pg/mL; P<0. 05 ) and NDR patients ( 601. 99 ± 194. 16 pg/mL; P<0. 05). While there was no significant difference in Dkk-3 level between NDR and healthy control group ( P =0. 729). The level of PDR in patients with Dkk-3 (396. 38± 185. 59 pg/mL) was lower than that of NPDR (538. 82 ± 187. 20 pg/mL;P=0. 002).
●CONCLUSION:The decrease of Dkk-3 level may be related to the occurrence and development of diabetic retinopathy, and there is a significant correlation with PDR. Circulating blood Dkk - 3 protein in diabetic retinopathy has a certain differential efficacy, it is likely to become diabetic retinopathy patients peripheral blood test indicators.

Aflatoxins produced primarily by two closely related fungi, Aspergillus flavus and Aspergillus parasiticus, are mutagenic and carcinogenic in animals and humans. Of many approaches investigated to manage aflatoxin contamination, biological control method has shown great promise. Numerous organisms, including bacteria, yeasts and nontoxigenic fungal strains of A. flavus and A. parasiticus, have been tested for their ability in controlling aflatoxin contamination. Great successes in reducing aflatoxin contamination have been achieved by application of nontoxigenic strains of A. flavus and A. parasiticus in fields of cotton, peanut, maize and pistachio. The nontoxigenic strains applied to soil occupy the same niches as the natural occurring toxigenic strains. They, therefore, are capable of competing and displacing toxigenic strains. In this paper, we review recent development in biological control of aflatoxin contamination.

Objective To examine the concentrations of hepatocyte growth factor(HGF)and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF)in the patients with diabetic neovascular glaucoma(NVG),proliferative retinopathy without neovascularization of the iris(PDR) and idiopathic macular role(IMH),and to determine the relationship between HGF and VEGF.Design Prospective case series. Participants 14 patients(14 eyes)with NVG,22 patients(22 eyes)with non-NVI PDR,19 patients(19 eyes)with IMH.Methods The double-antibody sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay(ELISA)was used to measure the intravitreous level of HGF and VEGF.Main Outcome Measures The concentrations of HGF and VEGF in the same specimens. Results The concentrations of HGF (mean?SD)in vitreous of NVG group,PDR group and IMH group were(12908.42?2946.46)、(9770.86?3802.99)、(4160.54?2044.80)pg/ ml,respectively(Kruskal-Walls test,X~2=32.36,P=0.000).In addition, significant differences were observed between groups of the concentrations of HGF(P<0.01,respectively).The intravitreous concentrations of VEGF(mean?SD)in three groups were(823.50?718.58)、(821.82?786.27)、(22.73?3.20)pg/ml(X~2=28.30,P=0.O00),respectively(Kruskal-Walls test,X~2=32.36,P=0.000).There was no significant correlation between the concentrations of HGF and those of VEGF in the same specimens from each group(P>0.05, respectively). Conclusions The intravitreous concentrations of HGF in the patients with diabetic NVG are obviously higher than those with IMH and non-NVI PDR,suggesting that HGF appears to be associated with mediating the neovascularization of retina and iris in NVG.However,it is not found there is any relationship between the intravitreous levels of HGF and VEGF.

There were significant increase in urine protein excretion, raised malondialdehyde(MDA) level and expressions of NF-?B,p22phox and p47phox in renal tissue, and significant decrease in reduced glutathione, superoxide dismutase, vitamin C and E levels in type 2 diabetic Goto-Kakisaki rats after 12 weeks. There was obvious histomorphologic change in the kidneys. All the above indices were improved by intraperitoneal injection of?-lipoic acid(35 mg/kg q.o.d).Besides,significant positive correlations were found of MDA level to p22phox,p47phox and NF-?B in the renal tissue,?-lipoic acid seems to protect the diabetic kidney in this diabetic rat model via antioxidative effects.

Objective To investigate the relationship between CYP2J2*7 mutation(G-76T) and coronary heart disease (CHD) in Chinese Hanpopulation and to study the effects of CYP2J2 geneover-expressionon the proliferation and migrationof aortic smooth muscle cells of ApoE-/- mice. Methods CYP2J2*7 genotype was detectedin 500 patients with CHD and 478 controlsubjects by the Polymerase Chain Reaction-Restriction Frag-ment Length Polymorphism (PCR-RFLP). Culturedaortic smooth muscle cells of ApoE-/- mice were divided into control group, sham transfectiongroup and CYP2J2 over-expression group. Cell proliferation and migration were investigated after CYP2J2 over-expressionby MTS and Transwell assay. Results The frequency of CYP2J2*7 in CHD group was significantly higher than that incontrol group (10.00% vs. 6.49%, P = 0.046). Same is the case in female cases(P = 0.026). Compared with these of aortic smooth muscle cells incontrol group and sham trans-fectiongroup, the cell proliferation in 24, 48, 72 h, and the cell migration in 48 h after CYP2J2 over-expression in CYP2J2 group were significantly suppressed. Conclusions CYP2J2*7 mutation might increase the risk of CHD in Chinese Han population. CYP2J2 over-expression can suppress the proliferation and migration of aortic smooth muscle cells and CYP2J2 might have the effect of anti-atherosclerosis.

Objective: To investigate the characteristics of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) syndromes and their elements in patients with posthepatitic cirrhosis by analyzing the relationships between signs and symptoms and biochemical parameters. Methods: A total of 440 patients with hepatitis B cirrhosis treated in Shanghai Public Health Center and Shuguang Hospital, Longhua Hospital and Central Hospital of Putuo District Affiliated to Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine during January 2002 to January 2006 were enrolled in this study. Signs and symptoms and biochemical information of patients were collected by using a self-designed questionnaire regarding the four examinations of TCM. Signs and symptoms were firstly analyzed to find the frequency of occurrence. Then, the patients were divided into two groups according to non-existent or existent sign and symptom and the correlations between the signs and symptoms which occurred most frequently and their biochemical parameters were analyzed. Results: Sixteen symptoms which occurred most frequently were fatigue, colored urine, liver palms, opaque complexion, string-like pulse, weakness at waist and knees, dry month and bitter taste in the mouth, profuse dreaminess and poor sleepiness, heaviness of limbs, abdominal distention, yellow eyes, fine pulse, impetuosity and susceptibility to rage, splenomegaly, poor appetite, and distension and fullness in the chest and hypochondrium. A previous study on syndrome differentiation of 900 patients with posthepatitic cirrhosis showed 4 syndrome patterns: internal accumulation of dampness-heat, liver-kidney yin deficiency, internal accumulation of blood stasis-heat, and liver depression and spleen deficiency. Further analysis showed that internal accumulation of dampness-heat syndrome was characterized by obvious hepatic inflammation, poor synthesis function and more asctites. Liver-kidney yin deficiency syndrome was characterized by low-level hepatic inflammation, poor synthesis function and more ascites. Internal accumulation of blood stasis-heat syndrome was characterized by low-level hepatic inflammation, poorer synthesis function, ascites and splenomegalia, and liver depression and spleen deficiency syndrome was characterized by slight hepatic inflammation, synthesis function injury, decreased internal portal vein diameter and less ascites. Conclusion: Different syndrome patterns have different pathological features, showing the complexity and polymorphism of syndrome construction.
