Chinese Journal of Tissue Engineering Research 2007;0(45):-
Hydroxyapatite, as a biologically active material, has the same structure and ingredients as the inorganic of hard tissue in human body, moreover, its biocompatibility and biological activity of interface are better than other biological materials. Hydroxyapatite has been widely used in anophthalmus reconstruction, orbital reconstruction, artificial cornea transplant and drug carrier. Pure hydroxyapatite has some defects such as brittleness, low-bending strength, the strength of anti-fatigue and anti-sabotage in the physical environment are not high. In order to overcome or reduce these shortcomings, porous hydroxyapatite and composite hydroxyapatite are made to extent the clinical application of hydroxyapatite. With a variety optimization of performance, process and preparation of the composite materials, the hydroxyapatite/polymer tissue engineering materials in ophthalmology will be further developed.

Objective To study the clinical features, treatment strategy and prognosis of children and adolescent with spinal bone tumors. Methods Forty-three patients were retrospectively investigated from January 1987 to June 2002, thirty-one of which were male, and the others were female. The age of patients ranged from 3 to 16 years with an average of 11.8 years. The pathological examination suggested that tumor-like conditions were 11 cases (25.6%), benign tumors 13 cases (30.2%), and malignant tumors 19 cases (44.2%). The cervical vertebrae tumors were 15 cases, thoracic vertebrae 16 cases, lumbar vertebrae 6 cases, and sacral vertebrae 6 cases. Treatment included: 1 case of malignant lymphoma was only subjected to chemotherapy; and the others were undertaken tumor resection and bone grafting to fusion with or without internal fixation. All patients of malignant tumors were performed adjuvant radiotherapy or chemotherapy after operation. Results The follow-up period was from 1 to 10 years with an average of 4.3 years. All patients of benign tumors obtained satisfied outcomes with local symptom and neural deficits improved, and no tumor recurrence happened. 6 cases (2 cases of primitive neural ectodermal tumor, 1 case of Ewing's sarcoma, 1 case of neuroblastoma, 1 case of plasma cell sarcoma and 1 case of chondrosarcoma) of malignant patients were died from metastasis and systemic failure, and the ratio was 14% and 31.6% of total and malignant tumor respectively. One case of bone giant cell tumor and 1 case of Schwannoma got recurrence at 2.5 years and 10 months after operation respectively. Conclusion For patients of children and adolescent with spinal bone tumors, the prognosis of the benign is better if tumors were removed radically. However, the patients with malignant tumors had worse prognosis with higher recurrent or death rate, and its prognosis is closely correlated to tumor's characters, operation strategy, and extending postoperative therapy.

Journal of Interventional Radiology 1994;0(02):-
Objective To study the pathological morphology of thyroid specimen after thyroid arteries embolization. In order to select appropriate size of embolizing granules, the diameters of thyroid arteries in Graves' disease were measured. Methods Multiple slides of embolized thyroid tissues from superior pole, body and inferior pole of the resected thyroid glands were made. After being embedded and stained, pathological morphology was observed and diameters of arteries in various parts of thyroid glands were measured under microscopy. Results Pathological examination of thyroid glands showed that superior and inferior thyroid arteries and most of their branches were embolized with ischemic necrosis and fibrosis in the embolized thyroid tissue. Follicular epithelium appeared as flat or cubic shapes with colloid reduction. Average diameter of main branches of superior artery was 440~550?m and that of inferior artery was 300~375?m. The diameters of capillary network in the thyroid body was 120~250?m, and the non embolized ones was 40~110?m. The diameter of isthmus was 130~150?m. Conclusions Pathological morphology of Graves' disease after thyroid arteries embolization showed that the excretion of thyroid glands would be decreased and equivalents to subtotal thyroidectomy.

10. Efficacy of Traditional Chinese Medicines in Preventing Oxaliplatin-induced Peripheral Neurotoxicity in Cancer Patients: A Network Meta-analysis
Chinese Herbal Medicines 2017;9(2):161-168
Objective Oxaliplatin-induced peripheral neurotoxicity (OIPN) is the main limitation for its continuation in cancer patients. Traditional Chinese medicines (TCMs) have been used to prevent OIPN in China and have been demonstrated to be effective. However, due to the lack of direct comparison among TCMs, it remains unclear that which TCM is the best for OIPN prevention. Consequently, the present study aimed to compare the relative efficacies of TCMs to find out the best TCM by applying a network meta-analysis. Methods Studies were identified by searching PubMed, EMbase, Cochrane Libraries, CNKI, WanFang, and WeiPu database from January 1990 to May 2016. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that evaluated the efficacy of TCMs in preventing OIPN in cancer patients were included. Statistical analysis was performed with ADDIS 1.16.6. Results Twenty-five RCTs (1572 patients) involving five TCMs were included. The results of network meta-analyses showed that compared with oxaliplatin-based chemotherapy alone, the combination with Huangqi Injection (HQI), Shenmai Injection (SMI), Shenfu Injection (SFI), Buyang Huanwu Decoction (BHD), and Huangqi Guizhi Wuwu Decoction (HGWD) could decrease the overall OIPN incidence and the severe OIPN incidence in cancer patients. In addition, probability ranking results showed the order of efficacy in preventing overall OIPN incidence was HQI > HGWD > SFI = SMI > BHD, while the order of efficacy in preventing severe OIPN incidence was HQI > HGWD > BHD > SFI = SMI. Conclusion All five TCMs are effective neuroprotective agents against OIPN. Among these TCMs, HQI and HGWD were superior to others in clinical efficacy. Moreover, Astragalus membranaceus might be a more promising herb for the OIPN prevention. However, more direct head-to-head RCTs with high quality and large sample size are still needed to further confirm the conclusion.
