Objective To explore the changes of weight,body mass index(MBI),serum glucose,serum insulin in sodium valproate(VPA)-treated children with epilepsy.Methods The study was carried out in 30 epileptic children treated with VPA for 3 months.Weight,height,serum glucose and insulin levels were conducted before and after VPA treatment.Serum insulin levels were detected by radioimmunoassay.Results After 3 months' treatment,body weight [(15.68?3.82)kg vs(19.64?4.75)kg,t=3.56 P0.05].Conclusions VPA therapy can make insuline weight,BMI,serum insulin increased and may lead to insulin resistance.Insulin resistance may be one of the reasons for weight gain in VPA-treated patients.

Microtubule is one of the key components of the cytoskeleton and plays an important role in the maintenance of cell shape and the process of signal transduction and mitosis. Due to the extreme importance of microtubule in the process of mitosis, tubulin becomes one of the most important targets for development of new anticancer drugs and tubulin inhibitors are used for the treatment of cancer nowadays. These inhibitors have antitumor activity by inhibiting or promoting the assembly of tubulin to microtubules and interfering the process of cell mitosis. This review summarized the research progress of the tubulin inhibitors, especially the introduction of the tubulin inhibitors of pharmacological activities and the progress of clinical research. Also, the development trend of these inhibitors is discussed.

Objective To investigate the possible association of HLA-DQ alleles with pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) caused by Chlamydia trachomatis in Han nationality in Northern China. Methods Thirty five Han Chinese patients with PID caused by Chlamydia trachomatis and 98 unrelated healthy individuals from the same area were genotyped for HLA-DQ gene alleles by the PCR-sequence specific oligonucleotide (SSO) method. Results Compared with the healthy controls, the frequencies of HLA-DQA1*0501 and HLA-DQB1*0301 allele were significantly increased and also associated with the antibody response to Chlamydia trachomatis heat-shock protein 60 (CHSP60). Conclusions These results may provide clues to reveal the susceptibility gene of chlamydial pelvic inflammatory disease in China and the immunogenetic mechanisms of the disease.

AIM: Effect of ischemia/reperfusion on expression of endothelin-1(ET-1) in the rat prostate and preventive measure were studied. METHODS: The abdominal aorta of rat was clipped briefly and repeatedly so as to treat the prostate with ischemia/reperfusion and expression of ET-1 mRNA in the ventral prostate was determined by RT-PCR.RESULTS: Expression of ET-1 mRNA in the ventral prostate was significantly increased at 1 h and 3 h after 90 min repeated ischemia/reperfusion ( P 0 05). CONCLUSIONS: Expression of ET-1 in the prostate can be affected by repeated brief ischemia/reperfusion and it may play a role in the development of benign prostatic hyperplasia. Ischemia-reperfusion-induced ET-1 expression in the prostate of rats can be inhibited by prectreatment of MK-801.

BackgroundHigh myopia is one of leading causes of blindness,so far the pathogenesis remains unclear.Two single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of rs6885224 and rs12716080 in CTNND2 gene were recently found to be associated with high myopia in Singaporean Chinese.But whether these SNPs are related with the pathogenesis of high myopia in Han Chinese is worth studying,Objective This study was to investigate the relationship between the genetic variations of the CTNND2 gene and high myopia in Han Chinese.MethodsA case-controlled association study was designed.Nine hundred and thirty-three individuals with high myopia and 1227age- and gender-matched normal subjects were included in this study.The 5 ml of periphery blood was obtained from all subjects for the extraction of genomic DNA.The target DNA was amplified using PCR and purified by the SNaPshot method.Four SNPs rs12716080,rs917012,rs6885224 and rs16901340 in the CTNND2 gene were genotyped.This study was approved by the Ethic Committee of Sichuan Provincial People Hospital.Written informed consent was obtained from each subject before his/her enrollment.Results The frequencies of the genotypes rs6885224,rs12716080,rs917012,rs16901340 SNPs were in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium (HWE) ( P=0.181,0.085,0.732,0.313,0.264,0.663,0.084,0.196).There were no significant differences in genotypes frequency distribution ( in turn P =0.654,0.406,0.828,0.403 ) and allele frequency distribution of the CTNND2 gene ( in turn P =0.377,0.209,0.743,0.198) between the high myopia group and normal control group.The haplotypes (TA and GA)frequencies of rs12716080 and rs917012 in the high myopia group were significantly different from those of the normal control group(TA:0.784 vs.0.719;GA:0.087 vs.0.136) (x2 =6.115,P=0.013 ;x2 =6.634,P=0.010),but those of GG were similar between the high myopia group and normal control group ( 0.123 vs.0.143,x2 =0.889,P =0.346). ConclusionsThe SNPs rs12716080,rs917012,rs6885224 and rs16901340 in CTNND2 gene were not responsible for high myopia,however,the haplotypes of rs12716080 and rs917012 are susceptible for high myopia in Han Chinese.

Objective To investigate the efficacy and side effects of 4?-adrenergic receptor(?- AR)antagonists in the treatment of chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome(CP/CPPS).Meth- ods Totally,325 patients(mean age,33.2 year;disease history,2.4 years)with CP/CPPS were randomly divided into Prazosin(n=95),Terazosin(n=78),Phenoxybenzamine(n=27),and Doxazosin mesylate controlled release tablets(n=72)groups.Some antibiotics and medications were used for allopathy.In addi- tion,53 cases with no?-AR antagonist treatment served as control group.The efficacy and side effects in all the patients were observed and recorded.The chronic prostatitis symptom index(CPSI)was used to evaluate the efficacy.Results In control group,22(41.5%)patients responded well to the treatment( CPSI mark drop≥5)and 31(58.5%)failed to respond to the treatment(CPSI mark drop＜5).In study group,199 (73.2%)patients responded well to the treatment,and 73(26.8%)failed.The difference in efficacy be- tween?-AR antagonists and placebo treatment was significant(P＜0.01).In study group,specifically,the effective rate was 55.6% in Phenoxybenzamine,78.2% in Terazosin,76.4% in Doxazosin mesylate con- trolled release tablets,and 71.6% in Prazosin groups.The main side effects of?-AR antagonists were postur- al hypotension(a rate of 23.2% for Prazosin,17.9% for Terazosin,22.2% for Phenoxybenzamine,and 8.3% for Doxazosin mesylate controlled release tablets)and dysfunction of ejaculation(only in Phenoxy- benzamine group with a rate of 51.9%).The rates of withdrawing treatment due to side effects were in turn 18.5% of Phenoxybenzamine,7.4% of Prazosin,5.1% of Terazosin,and 0% of Doxazosin mesylate con- trolled release tablets.Conclusions As essential medications for the treatment of CP/CPPS,?-AR antag- onists can relieve the clinical symptoms(dropping NIH-CPSI mark significantly),but some side effects should be considered when some medications are selected.
