Objective To investigate the value of ultrasound examination in the diagnosis of acute appendicitis. Methods Emergency abdominal ultrasound examination was performed on 152 children who had clinically suspected acute appendicitis. Results Sixty-three children were diagnosed as acute appendicitis by ultrasound . Among them, fifty-nine children had emergency appendectomy; the other 4 had delayed appendectomy six months after conservative therapy for appendiceal mass. All of the diagnoses were confirmed to be correct by pathologis examination . Among the other 89 children, the diagnosis was luteinic rupture in 4, choledochal cyst in 2, omental cyst in 1, hydronephrosis in 1, and nephrolithiasis in 1. Eighty of them were diagnosed as mesenteric lymphadenitis and treated conservatively. Seventy-six of these eighty children recovered , and appendectomy was performed on four patients. In two of them the diagnosis was suppurative appendicitis, and in two, the diagnosis was simple appendicitis. Conclusions Combined with consideration of the symptoms and signs, ultrasound is valuable in the diagnosis of appendicitis.

Hypertension is one of main risk factors for the occurrence and death of stroke and coronary heart disease. Its prevalence rate is rising year by year. It severely threatens the health of the human beings. The acupuncture method of "activating blood and dispersing wind, harmonizing Gan-Pi" for treating hypertension launched by Academician SHI Xue-min has aroused great attention due to good cur- ative effect and less adverse reactions. In this paper principles of the circular motion covered by the acupuncture method of "activating blood and dispersing wind, harmonizing Gan-Pi" were clarified.

Objective To discuss the mechanism and characteristics of clinic presentation and neuropathology in idiopathic hypereosinophilic syndrome (IHES) encephalopathy. Methods IHES encephalopathy was diagnosed by clinical presentations, lab examinations, neurologic images, marrow and brain biopsy, then treated with corticosteroids and continuous follow-up. Results The IHES patient presented progressive limbs weakness and cognitive deficit with elevated eosinophil count. Results of lab examinations and bone marrow biopsy ruled out secondary eosinophilia and clonal eosinophilia such as eosinophilic leukemia.Brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) study showed multiple lesions in right frontal lobe, bilateral parietal and occipital lobe, presenting hypointensity in T1 weighted images, hyperintensity in T2 and fluid-attenuated inversion recovery weighed images. Brain biopsy showed proliferation of vascular membrane, small vessels stenosis,ischemia-induced morphological change and necrosis of neurons in the lesions. The patient was continuously treated with corticosteroids, and the situation was stabilized with follow-up.Conclusions IHES encephalopathy should be paid more attention in clinical practice of neurologists for its rarity. Brain vascular damages caused by elevated eosinophil may be an important pathophysiological mechanism of IHES encephalopathy, and corticosteroids or hydroxycarbamide should be used for the treatment.

OBJECTIVETo observe effects of acupuncture and moxibustion on ultrastructure and silent information regulator 1 (SIR1) in hippocampal neuron mitochondria in rats with Alzheimer's disease (AD) in order to explore its possible effective mechanism during the process of protecting mitochondria.
METHODSEighty Wistar rats were randomly divided into a normal group, a sham operation group, a model group and an acupuncture group, 20 rats in each one. The AD model was established in the model group and acupuncture group with injection of Amyloid beta Protein Fragment1-14 (Abeta1-42) into the hippocampus. Acupuncture and moxibustion was applied at "Baihui" (GV 20) and "Shenshu" (BL 23) in the acupuncture group, once a day, seven days as a treatment course and totally two course were required. The rest groups were all fed with normal diet, without any treatment. The transmission electron microscopy, immunohistochemistry and immunoblotting technique were respectively adapted to measure ultrastructure and level of STR1 in hippocampal neuron mitochondria in AD rats.
RESULTSCompared with the model group, the ultrastructure in hippocampal neuron mitochondria in the acupuncture group was effectively improved. The average optical density of SIR1 in hippocampus was 0.21 +/- 0.10 and the gray value was 136.82 +/- 47.42 in the model group, which were obviously lower than 0.47 +/- 0.09 and 281.44 +/- 57.98 in the normal group (both P < 0.01). However, levels of SIR1 in the acupuncture group, they were 0.32 +/- 0.11 and 199.52 +/- 58.12, which were significantly increased compared with those in the model group (both P < 0.05).
CONCLUSIONThe reinforcing-kidney and regulating-Governor Vessel method of acupuncture and moxibustion for AD could improve ultrastructure of mitochondria and increase levels of SIR1 to achieve the aim of recovering injury of mitochondria and protecting function of mitochondria.

Objective To assess the feasibility of double phase subtraction angiography with second generation (128-slice )dual-source CT in low dose Flash spiral scan mode for the evaluation of cerebral vessel, compared with dual-energy subtraction angiogra-phy.Methods 60 patients underwent double phrase CT angiography were divided into group A (n = 30,with Flash spiral scan mode),group B(n=30,with dual-energy scan mode). The signal-to-noise ratio(SNR),the contrast-to-noise ratio(CNR)and the av-erage radiation of double phrase subtraction images were measured in two groups, respectively. The double phase subtraction images quality were graded by 2 independent readers on a 5-point scale(5=excellent)in double-blind,according to various degrees of the re-sidual bones, the vessel displayed and luminal integrity, respectively.Differences between two groups were analyzed by Mann-whit-ney test and t test. Results The double phrase image SNR showed no difference to both two groups(P >0.05).The image CNR of arterial and venous phase in group A were higher than that of group B(40.89±8.89 and 40.27 ±9.90 in group A vs 35.28 ±8.43 and 34.89±8.66 in group B;P <0.05)respectively.There were no singnificant difference in the bone removal image scores of doub-le phase and in the vessel image scores of venous phase to both two groups respectively(P >0.05).The vessel image scores of arterial phase were higher in group A than that of group B(4.93±0.25 vs 3.87±0.97;P <0.05).Some internal carotid in the base of skull has not good luminal integrity in group B.The mean dose length product (DLP)in group A was lower than that of group B,with a 39 percent reduction[(226±5.69 )mGy/cm vs (368 ± 21.35 )mGy/cm,P < 0.05 ].Conclusion With the roughly similar image quality to dual-energy double phase subtraction angiography, the cerebral vessels can be assessed using dual-source CT subtraction angiography in Flash spiral scan mode and a lower radiation dose.
