OBJECTIVETo observe the influence of bone metabolism biochemical indices of senile osteoporosis treated with distant acupuncture and nearby tuina, and to probe the better therapy for senile osteoporosis.
METHODSSixty-four cases were randomly divided into an observation group and a control group. In control group (30 cases), Calcium Carbonate D, Tablet was orally taken for 12 weeks continuously. In observation group (34 cases), "distant acupuncture and nearby tuina" therapy were applied, that was puncture at Weizhong (BL 40) and Taixi (KI 3), and tuina therapy on lumber region, 30 times treatment was applied totally. The changes of blood calcium (Ca), phosphorus (P), ALP, BGP and urine DPD in bone metabolism biochemical indices were observed and compared before and after treatment in two groups.
RESULTSThere were significant differences in P, BGP, DPD in bone metabolism biochemical indices in both groups before and after treatment (P < 0.05, P < 0.01), the contents of blood P decreased, blood BGP increased and urine DPD decreased. But, there were no significant differences in above indices between two groups.
CONCLUSIONThe calcium with oral administration and "distant acupuncture and nearby tuina" therapy can effectively improve the bone metabolism biochemical indices of senile osteoporosis, and they have positive significance in prevention of osteoporosis, however, it hasn't proved that which method is better for calcium protecting.

Objective: To observe the improving effect of muscle regions of meridians needling method on the upper limb function in children with cerebral palsy of spastic hemiplegic type. Methods: A total of 100 children with cerebral palsy of spastic hemiplegia type were divided into a treatment group and a control group according to the visiting sequence, with 50 cases in each group. The control group was treated with conventional rehabilitation plus conventional acupuncture treatment. The treatment group was treated with conventional rehabilitation plus muscle regions of meridians needling method. The electromyography (EMG) signal values of triceps brachii and pronator teres were detected before treatment, and 3 months and 6 months after treatment. The clinical efficacy was evaluated by Peabody developmental motor scale-fine motor (PDMS-FM) and fine motor function measure (FMFM). Results: Three and six months after treatment, the EMG signal values of triceps brachii and pronator teres, grasping scores and visual-motor integrated scores of PDMS-FM and the FMFM scores in both groups increased to varying degrees compared with the same group before treatment, and the intra-group differences were all statistically significant (all P<0.05). Six months after treatment, the results of the above three items in the treatment group were all better than those in the control group, and the differences between the groups were statistically significant (all P<0.05). Conclusion: Muscle regions of meridians needling method added on the basis of conventional rehabilitation can effectively reduce the muscle tone of upper limb and enhance the muscle strength, and improve the upper limb function in children with cerebral palsy of spastic hemiplegia type. The efficacy is superior to that of the conventional rehabilitation plus conventional acupuncture treatment.

Biomedical and Environmental Sciences 2012;25(2):189-196
OBJECTIVETo investigate the toxic effects of n-hexane on the Ganod of female mice.
METHODSn-Hexane was administered to four groups of mice by inhalation at doses of 0, 3.0, 15.1, and 75.8 mL/m3 respectivelyfor five weeks. Each group consisted of 10 mice, of which half were injected in first with 10 IU of pregnant mare serum gonadotrophin (PMSG) on the 33rd days, and then with 10 IU of human chorionic gonadotrophin (HCG) 48 hrs later. After the treatment, mouse sera were sampled and ovulating hormone (LH), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), estradiol (E2), and progesterone (P4) levels were measured by electrochemiluminescence immunoassays (ECLIA). In each group, the right ovaries of the non-super-ovulated mice were stained with hematoxylin and eosin while ovaries on the left side were prepared with the TUNEL method in order to detect apoptotic cells.
RESULTSThe duration of the diestrus stage decreased significantly (P < 0.05) in the 75.8 mL/m3 group. All super-ovulated mice in each treatment group produced fewer eggs than those in the control group (P < 0.05). The number of follicles in ovaries in the 75.8 mL/m3 group was smaller compared with the control group (P < 0.05).The serum P4 levels in each treatment group were lower than those in the control group (F = 6.196, P < 0.01). The cell apoptotic rate in the 75.8 mL/m3 group was higher (P < 0.05).
CONCLUSIONn-Hexane may have directly mediated via alterations hormone secretion and promoted granulosal cell apoptotic, which may be one of the important mechanisms for n-hexane induced mouse ovary impairment.

OBJECTIVETo investigate association of vitamin D receptor (VDR) gene polymorphisms with the susceptibility to chronic periodontitis (CP) of Han Nationality.
METHODSBuccal swabs from 166 patients with severe, moderate and mild CP respectively and 80 matched control individuals were collected. DNA was extracted from these buccal swabs using Chelex-100 method. VDR BsmI, ApaI, TaqI were tested with polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP). The distribution of the genotypes and allele frequencies in the patient and control groups were analyzed.
RESULTSThe frequency of VDR ApaI allele A was significantly higher among patients with CP than controls. Frequencies of VDR ApaI allele A were significantly higher in severe CP patients than in moderate CP and mild CP respectively. There was no significant difference in the genotype distribution or the allele frequencies of VDR BsmI and TaqI between the controls and CP patients.
CONCLUSIONSThese data indicate that VDR ApaI allele A may be related to the susceptibility to CP in Han Nationality.
