OBJECTIVETo investigate the association of non-bacterial respiratory pathogens with asthmatic diseases in children, and the clinical significance of total serum IgE levels and peripheral eosinophil count in infection with non-bacterial respiratory pathogens.
METHODSIndirect immunofluorescence assay was used to detect IgM antibodies against nine types of non-bacterial respiratory pathogens in the sera of 490 children with asthmatic diseases between September 2010 and September 2011. Pathogens were analyzed and total serum IgE levels and peripheral eosinophil count were measured in IgM-positive cases.
RESULTSOf the 490 children with asthmatic diseases, 47.6% (233 cases) were positive with IgM antibodies against non-bacterial respiratory pathogens, the most common being Mycoplasma pneumoniae (MP) (25.3%), followed by adenovirus (ADV) (8.9%) and influenza B virus (Flu B) (8.8%). Thirty-six cases suffered from co-infection of two or more non-bacterial pathogens, mainly comprising MP and other pathogens (94%). There were significant differences in the total detection rate of IgM antibodies among all age groups (0-30 days: 50.0%; 1-6 months: 67.3%; 0.5-1 year: 33.1%; 1-3 years: 57.3%; 3-8.9 years: 61.7%). The positive rate of IgM antibodies against respiratory pathogens was highest in children with bronchial asthma, followed by children with asthmatic bronchitis, and it was lowest in children with bronchiolitis. IgM-positive children had significantly decreased blood eosinophils and significantly increased total serum IgE levels.
CONCLUSIONSThe main non-bacterial respiratory pathogens include MP, ADV and Flu B in children with asthmatic diseases, and co-infection of MP and other non-bacterial pathogens is common. Infants aged 1 to 6 months have a higher infection rate than other age groups. Monitoring the changes in total serum IgE levels and peripheral eosinophil count has great significance for the clinical diagnosis and treatment of asthmatic diseases in children.

Mitral regurgitation is one of the most serious heart diseases. With the development of up-to-date medical techniques, the ratio of successful operations in valvular repair and valvular replacement has been largely improved. Examinations before operation become extremely crucial. Accurate method is required in assessing the degree of mitral regurgitation to set down the corresponding treatment method. This paper reviews the evaluation methods of mitral valvular regurgitation provided in these years and presents comments on the application areas as well as the merits and disadvantages of those methods. Finally, the prospect of the method based on three-dimensional Doppler ultrasonographic imaging on mitral regurgitation is discussed.

OBJECTIVETo assess the clinical value of (18)F-FDG PET/CT and contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CECT) in detecting residual tumor or tumor recurrence and metastasis in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) who show an elevated serum alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) level after surgical intervention.
METHODSThe data of (18)F-FDG PET/CT and CECT, which were performed at an interval within 2 weeks, were reviewed in 54 HCC patients showing elevated AFP levels after surgical interventions of the tumor. The patients were followed up for at least 6 months and the imaging findings were confirmed by pathological examination, follow-up imaging examination, or serum AFP level monitoring.
RESULTSForty-five patients were found to have focal intrahepatic HCC recurrence after surgical interventions, and 9 patients were free of HCC recurrence. Twenty-three patients developed extrahepatic metastasis, among whom 19 also had intrahepatic tumor recurrence and 4 had extrahepatic metastasis only. The sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy of (18)F-FDG PET/CT in the detection of HCC recurrence were 88.9% (40/45), 77.8% (7/9), and 87.0% (47/54), respectively, as compared with those of 57.8% (26/45), 100% (9/9), and 64.8% (35/54) by CECT detection.
CONCLUSIONCompared with CECT, (18)F-PET/CT shows a high sensitivity and accuracy in detecting postoperative tumor residual or recurrence in the liver, and can also be an effective modality for detecting extrahepatic lesions in HCC patients.

BACKGROUND: Proteomics is a well studied research method, but its application in the non-surgical treatment of lumbar intervertebral disc protrusion (LIDP) is little reported. OBJECTIVE: To screen the differentially expressed proteins in patients with LIDP but without blood stasis before and after non-surgical treatment by proteomics. METHODS: Sixty patients with LIDP but without blood stasis were selected, and treated with non-surgical treatment for 4 weeks. The differentially expressed proteins were screened and identified by iTRAQ combined with LC-MS/MS. The bioinformatics analysis of the identified proteins was carried out, and the curative effectiveness was investigated. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: Compared with those before treatment, the Visual Analogue Scale scores were significantly (P < 0.05), the Japanese Orthopedic Association scores were significantly increased decreased (P < 0.05), and the excellent and good rate reached 95.0% post-treatment. A total of 300 differentially expressed proteins were screened and 25 significantly expressed proteins were identified (P <0.05). Bioinformatics analysis revealed that nine of the significantly expressed proteins were enriched to 15 KEGG signaling pathways. These results suggest that the use of Western medicine non-surgical treatment for the LIDP without blood stasis can achieve satisfactory results. Besides, complement C1qA, cDNA protein (FLJ60724), complement C4B frameshift mutation, cDNA protein (FLJ53025), mannose binding protein C, apolipoprotein B, hemoglobin α-1 globin chain variant, hemoglobin β subunit and cDNA protein (FLJ76254) may be the potential serum markers of the non-surgical treatment for the LIDP without non-blood stasis.

Objective In this study, human bronchial epithelial cell were inoculated with positive sputum specimens of HBoV. Methods After four days infection, cytopathic effect (CPE) were observed by inverted microscopy. These viruses all cause typical cell damages such as rounded and shrivelled, fusion and fallout. Results These damages got quick following increased future degenerations. The other assay result of CPE within the infected cells were observed by inverted microscopy, have typical "owl's eye" plaque and above 90 percent hemadsorption within the infected cells by erthrocytes for hemadsorption technique. The typical fluorescence lump of nucleus within the infected cells was found by indirect immunofluorescence technique. Conclusion Isolation and identification of HBoV could be done in the human bronchial epithelial cell, and we found some characterizing CPE in the human bronchial epithelial cell after HBoV infection. The above studies pave a way for studying pathogenicty of human bocavirus.

OBJECTIVETo study the inhibitory and inductive effect of matrine (MA) on human colorectal cancer HT29 cells.
METHODSMTT assay was used to determine the cell growth inhibitory rate in vitro . Changes of cell cycle and the apoptosis of HT29 cells before and after MA treatment were observed using flow cytometry and electron microscope.
RESULTSMTT showed that 2-32 mg/mL MA inhibited the proliferation of HT29 cells (P < 0.05) in a dose- and time-dependent manner. Cells treated by 4, 8, and 16 mg/mL MA at G0/G1 phase were obviously higher than those in the negative control group (P < 0.05), indicating that the cell cycle was arrested at G0/G1 phase. Morphological apoptosis of HT29 cells could be seen under transmission electron microscope.
CONCLUSIONMA inhibited the proliferation of HT29 cells, and its mechanism might be associated with stagnation at G0/G1 phase and inducing apoptosis of HT29 cells.

Previous studies have shown that oxidative stress and corporal fibrosis in penile tissues of rats were key pathological factors of erectile dysfunction induced by diabetic mellitus (DMED). Lipoxin A4 (LXA4) was reported to inhibit oxidative stress and fibrosis diseases, while whether it could exert a protective role on erectile function was not clear. Type I diabetic mellitus (DM) was induced in thirty male 10-week-old Sprague-Dawley rats using streptozotocin. Ten weeks later, twenty-two rats with DMED confirmed by an apomorphine test were divided into two groups: the DMED group (n = 11) and the DMED + LXA4 group (n = 11; LXA4 injection daily for 4 weeks). In addition, another ten age-matched rats formed the Control group. We found that erectile function was significantly impaired in the DMED group compared with the Control group, but was improved in the DMED + LXA4 group. Similarly, the over-activated oxidative stress and impaired endothelial function in the DMED group were both improved in the DMED + LXA4 group. Moreover, the DMED group showed serious corporal fibrosis, which was also inhibited by the treatment of LXA4 in the DMED + LXA4 group. Taken together, LXA4 could exert an inhibition role on oxidative stress and fibrosis to improve DMED effectively.
