Mebendazole was tested for its efficacy in individual treatment and mass control of Trichuris trichiura infection in Korea. The results were as follows: The efficacy of mebendazole in 430 cases 3 weeks after treatment with mebendazole(100-1,200 mg) was not so satisfactory (15.0-64.0 and 24.6-95.2% in cure and egg reduction rates respectively). But it was observed that the higher the total dose of the drug the better the efficacy. The egg positive rate of the inhabitants in mass control programme by 600 mg mebendazole decreased form 40.0 to 5.6 % during one year, May 1982-May 1983, by repeated blanket mass chemotherapy every 3 months (in conventional regimen), while the decrease was less marked or unrecognizable in 3-month (signle or two divided doses), 6-month, 12-month interval and placebo control groups. From the results, it was concluded that, although mebendazole was not highly effective in individual treatment of T. trichiura infection, it was fairly useful in mass cotrol, by repeated mass chemotherapy every 3 months.

The fowl nematode Ascaridia galli employed in this experiment was obtained from the intestine of domestic fowls at the local market. The worms selected and washed several times in normal sterilized saline solution. Each about thirty of intact worms were incubated in 50 cc volume of special incubation flasks with incubation mixture consisting of 10 cc of Krebs-Ringer phosphate buffer (pH 7.4) to which were added universally labeled C14-glucose and non-radioactive carrier glucose so as to contain concentration of 200 mg per cent. The worms were allowed to incubation for 3 hours in Dubnoff metabolic shaking incubator at 38 C. After incubation period, respiratory CO(2) samples from central well of incubation flask were analysed for total CO(2) production rate and their specific activity of respiratory CO(2). Glycogen samples isolated from worms were analysed for uptake rate was determined by analyzing the difference of the glucose concentration in a medium before and after incubation period . Radioactivities of these series of experiments were counted by an endwindow Geiger-Muller counter as an infinitely thin samples. The quantitative analysis of C(14)-glucose utilized by Ascaridia galli was summarized as the following . The glucose uptake rate by A. galli was a mean value of 1.73+/-0.32 micro-mole per hour per gram of wet wt. and total CO(2) production rate by the worms averaged 8.44+/-1.11 micro-mole per hour per gram of wet wt. The relative specific activity of respiratory CO(2) (R.S.A CO(2)) averaged 2.68+/-0.38 per cent . Thus , a man of 2.68 per cent of total CO(2) production rate was originated from the glucose in the medium, therefore the rate of CO(2) production derived from medium glucose was a mean of 0.23+/-0.03 micro-mole per hour per gram of wet wt. Thus, the average value of 2.58+/-0.55 percent (R.G.D CO(2))of glucose utilized by the worms from the medium glucose was oxidized to respiratory CO2. The tissue concentration of glycogen in A. galli was a mean of 22.59+/-1.18 miligram per gram of wet wt or 2.26+/-0.123 percent per gram, and the turnover rate of glycogen pool yielded with a mean of 0.17+/-0.04 percent per hour or 0.037+/-0.006 miligram per hour per gram of wet wt. Therefore, a mean value of 16.37+/-4.04 per cent (R.G.D gly) of glucose was incorporated to the glycogen. These data account for that at least 18.95 per cent of the utilized glucose by the worms participated in furnishing the oxidation into respiratory CO(2) and the synthetic process into glycogen. According to the above data of the experiment, it is suggested in the metabolic process of glucose by Ascaridia galli that the synthetic process into the glycogen is more active than the oxidative process into the respiratory CO(2).

A total of 2,026 leprosy patients of the National Sorokdo Hospital was examined their intestinal parasites by cellophane thick smear method in January 1983. The egg positive cases of Taenia spp. were treated with bithionol and the segments of Taenia were collected for species identification. The results were as follows: Total egg positive rate of any kind helminth was 78.2 percent and cumulative total was 85.2 percent. The egg positive rate for each helminth was as follow; Taenia spp. 3.4 percent, Ascaris lumbricoides 4.5 percent, Trichuris trichiura 72.l percent, Clonorchis sinensis 2.8 percent and other 0.05 percent. A total of 66 Taenia egg positive cases was treated; out of them proglottids of Taenia were collected from 26 cases. All of the collected worms were identified as T. saginata. The results revealed significantly high egg positive rate of T. trichiura. However, A. lumbricoides was found to be controlled considerably by repeated chemotherapy during past 3 years. If chemotherapeutic agent is replaced with oxantel-pyrantel tablet, better result is expected. No clue was found for prevalence of T. solium from both human and the pig in the island.

The author reported in the previous pager on his observation of sudden death of Clonorchis sinensis cercaria before penetration into the body of fry such as Cyprinus carpio and Carassius auratus. And in these studies, the reason behind the fact was investigated and it was found that the mucous substances on the surface of a certain fishes have a strong wormicidal effect to the larva of C. sinensis. When cercariae of C. sinensis were immersed into the mucous substance of gold fish for three minutes 36 seconds to 4 minutes 20 seconds, into that of Aplocheilus latipes for 4 minutes 30 seconds to 5 minutes 20 seconds, into that of Cyprinus carpio for 5 minutes 15 seconds to 6 minutes l6 seconds, and into that of Carassius auratus for 5 minutes 20 seconds to 7 minutes 30 seconds, it was observed that they were all killed. No wormicidal effect against C. sinensis could be observed with the mucous substance obtained from Pseudorasbora parva, Misgurnus anguillicaudatus and Ophicephalus argus. No wormicidal effect against Metagonimus sp. cercaria is observed with the mucous substance obtained from Cyprinus carpio, Carassius auratus. The wormicidal effect of the mucous substances obtained from gold fish was destroyed when heated over 60 C. The movements of metacercaria of C. sinensis stopped after 10 minutes application of the mucous substance obtained from Cyprinus carpio and they were killed within 30 minutes. When the adult worms collected from the bile duct of experimentally infected rabbits for 20 to 60 days, were immersed into mucous substance from Cyprinus carpio, they were killed between 25 minutes and 35 minutes. No wormicidal effect could be observed with the mucous substance obtained from dead Cyprinus carpio, Carassius auratus, gold fish, when applied to the adult worms and larvae of C. sinensis.
