OBJECTIVETo develop a transparent, non-toxic, non-irritating anti-fogging agent with long-lasting effect for nasal endoscopy.
METHODSThe anti-fogging agent was prepared by mixing ethanol, propylene glycol, polyoxyethylene lauryl ether, sodium dodecyl sulfate, polyethylene glycol 400 and deionized water at different proportions based on an orthogonal test design. Twenty-seven test samples of the anti-fogging agents were obtained, which were colorless, transparent, and non-irritating, with a pH value of 7-8. Storz00 nasal endoscopy and its imaging system were used to test the anti-fogging time of the 27 samples, and each agent was tested for 3 times with medical Seoul iodine and 95% ethanol as control.
RESULTSThe optimal composition of the anti-fogging agent was 20% ethanol, 10% propylene glycol, 20% polyoxyethylene lauryl ether, 4% sodium dodecyl sulfate, 4% polyethylene glycol, 42% deionized water. The anti-fogging time of this agent reached 15 min, significantly longer than that of medical Seoul iodine (4 min) and 95% ethanol (18 s).
CONCLUSIONThis anti-fogging agent for nasal endoscopes is colorless and safe and has a long anti-fogging time by forming a homogenous transparent membrane over the endoscopic lens.

OBJECTIVETo discuss the early diagnostic methods and therapeutic principles of aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH), and evaluate the therapeutic efficacy objectively.
METHODSUsing neuro-imaging examinations combined with case history and clinical symptoms to make the early diagnosis of 96 case with aneurysmal SAH, and Guglielmi detachable microcoil (GDC) was utilized for early intracapsular embolization in the ruptured aneurysms. Efficient symptomatic treatment was done early after operation.
RESULTSAll of 96 cases were early diagnosed and successfully embolized; Among them, the aneurysmal lumen was 100% occluded in 83 cases, 95% in 8 cases, 90% in 5 cases. There were 3 cases complicating with aneurysms rupture during operation, 5 cases with cerebral vasospasm. One case was affected by microcoil terminal escape after operation, 3 recurrent cases were all cured with secondary GDC embolization. There were 9 complications associated with embolization techniques and 13 cases (13.5%) occurring permanent sequelae associated with SAH. According to the Glasgow prognosis score, 77 patients got grade I, 7 grade II, 6 grade III, 3 grade IV, and 3 grade V. The mortality rate was 3.1%.
CONCLUSIONSTo make early etiological diagnosis of the SAH patients, using GDC to embolize the aneurysms, and earlier efficient symptomatic treatment are important methods to improve the curative rate and reduce the mortality rate.

In order to investigate the effect of curcumin combined with all-trans retinoid acid (ATRA) on differentiation of ATRA-resistant acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL) cells and its molecular mechanism, the NB4-R1, an ATRA-resistant APL cells, was used as a model, counting of NB4-R1 and cell morphologic observation were performed, the effect of curcumin alone or combined with ATRA on proliferation, differentiation of NB4-R1 cells was detected by flow cytometry (FCM), the change of AKT phosphorylation in cell differentiation was detected by Western blot. The results showed that ATRA had no influence on NB4-R1 cell proliferation, but enhanced the inhibitory effect of curcumin on NB4-R1 cell growth; the curcumin or ATRA alone did not affect NB4-R1 differentiation; curcumin combined with ATRA could obviously induce CD11b expression; the cell morphology showed obvious differentiation characteristics. ATRA could promote phosphorylation of AKT in NB4 cells at short time, but not had effect on phosphorylation of AKT in NB4-R1 cells; the curcumin could enhance the phosphorylation of AKT in NB4-1R cells, the curcumin combined with ATRA could further enhance the phosphorylation of AKT. It is concluded that PI3K/AKT pathway inactivation may be one of the factors of drug resistance in APL and curcumin promotes differentiation of NB4-R1 through activating PI3K/AKT pathway.

OBJECTIVETo analyze the factors affecting prognosis of patients with nasal carcinoma.
METHODS163 patients treated from 1985 to 1998 were analyzed. The survival analysis was performed by Kaplan-Meier estimate and the comparison between groups by Log-rank test. Multivariate analysis was carried out by Cox proportional hazard model.
RESULTSThe overall 5-year survival rate was 58.2%. The 5-year survival rate was 55.8% in squamous-cell carcinoma, 44.0% in adenocarcinoma, 59.7% in undifferentiated carcinoma, 76.3% in adenoid cystic carcinoma, 71.4% in mucoepidermoid carcinoma, 25.0% in rhabdomyosarcoma, 26.7% in malignant melanoma, 50.0% in neuroblastoma (P > 0.05). Patients with cervical metastasis gave a 5-year survival of 53.5% while those without gave 58.9% (P > 0.05). Patients with involvement of sphenoidal sinus or maxillary sinus gave the worse survival. The 5-year survival rate was 73.8% in patients whose cancer completely disappeared after treatment. It was 41.6% in patients whose cancer incompletely disappeared, and 34.3% in patients whose cancer remained refractory (P < 0.01). The 5-year survival was 78.3% in stage I disease, 56.4% in stage II disease, 54.2% in stage III and 35.9% in stage IV (P < 0.05). The 5-year survival rate of patients who were treated with radiotherapy only was 56.9%. That of patients who were treated with surgery only was 56.6%. That with chemotherapy only was 25.0% whereas that of patients treated with combination treatment was 61.8% (P > 0.05). So far, 85 patients have died up to writing this report, 57.6% (49 patients) of recurrence or uncontrolled.
CONCLUSIONClinical stage, immediate therapeutic response and involvement of sphenoidal or maxillary sinus; but not the pathologic type, the presence of cervical metastasis nor the method of treatment, are the factors affecting the prognosis of patients with nasal carcinoma. Recurrence and uncontrolled disease are the cause of death.

Chinese Journal of Pathophysiology 2018;34(4):623-629
AIM:To investigate the effect of down-regulation of X-box binding protein 1(XBP1)expression on the viability and apoptosis of glioma cells.METHODS:The mRNA expression of XBP1 in the glioma tissues was de-tected by qPCR.Small interfering RNA(siRNA)interfering with XBP1 expression(XBP1-siRNA)was transfected into human brain glioma U251 cells. At the same time, control group(the cells without special treatment)and negative control (NC-siRNA)group(transfected with siRNA without any interference)were set up.The mRNA expression of XBP1 in the 3 groups 48 h after transfection was detected by qPCR.The protein levels of XBP1, proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA),B-cell lymphoma/leukemia-2(Bcl-2),Bcl-2-associated X protein(Bax),cyclin D1(cyclin D1), phosphati-dylinositol 3-kinase(PI3K)and phosphorylated Akt(p-Akt)were determined by Western blot. The cell viability was measured by CCK-8 assay. The cell cycle distribution and apoptosis were analyzed by flow cytometry.RESULTS:The ex-pression level of XBP1 in the glioma tissues was significantly higher than that in the tumor adjacent tissues(P<0.05). The XBP1 expression at mRNA and protein levels was significantly decreased in the cells transfected with XBP1-siRNA(P<0.05).No statistically significant difference of the cell viability, cell cycle, apoptotic rate and the protein levels of PCNA,Bcl-2,Bax,cyclin D1,PI3K and p-Akt between NC-siRNA group and control group was observed.Compared with control group, the cell viability, S-phase cells and the protein levels of PCNA, Bcl-2, cyclin D1, PI3K, and p-Akt in XBP1-siRNA group were decreased significantly, and the apoptotic rate, G0/G1-phase cells and Bax protein expression were significantly increased(P<0.05).CONCLUSION:Down-regulation of XBP1 gene expression in brain glioma cells reduces the viability of cancer cells, blocks the cells in G1phase and promote apoptosis. The mechanism is related to the inhibition of PI3K/Akt signaling pathway.
