Objective To assess the irregular shape of hematoma with math methods, which is one of the risk factors of hematoma enlargement. Methods We reviewed images data of patients with spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage treated nonsurgically who underwent initial computed tomography (CT) within 6 hours and repeated CT within 48 hours of onset. The area(s),the circumference(L),the greatest diameter(A)and the transverse diameter(B)of the greatest hemorrhage CT slice was measured. The formula X=L/S waft used to calculate the value. We calculated the area(S1)and the circumference (L1) of the ellipse with A as its long diameter and B as its short diameter. The formula X1=S1/L1 was used to calculate the value. We used formula R=X/X1 to assess the irregular hematoma shape. The relationships between hematoma enlargement and R was analyzed. Results Thirty-one patients(25.8%) showed enlarged hematomas after admission. The larger the value of R,the more irregular the shape of hematoma. When R≥1.3,the shape of the hematoma was significantly irregular.36.0% patients with R≥1.3 had hematoma enlarged.compared with only 18.6% those with R<1.3(χ2=4.62,P=0.032).Conclusions The irregular shape index R Can be used to assess the shape of a hematoma. A particularly high likelihood of hematoma enlargement is observed in patients with an irregularly shape index R≥1.3.

This study is to investigate the influence and the expression of CMTM family of testosterone on spermatogenesis suppression in the male rats treated by gossypol and cyclophosphamide. Gossypol (50 mg kg(-1)) and cyclophosphamide (20 mg kg(-1)) were administered to male rats to induce spermatogenesis suppression. Testosterone propionate was administrated at the dose of 5 mg kg(-1) every other day for 6 times. Sperm was collected from the left caudal epididymis, the count and motility of sperm were analyzed by CASA. Morphological change of testis tissue was observed with HE staining. The expression of CMTM family was examined by Western blotting assay. Gossypol (50 mg kg(-1)) and cyclophosphamide (20 mg kg(-1)) decreased the count and motility of sperm, and the pathological change of testis tissue was also observed. But, testosterone (5 mg kg(-1)) had positive effect. Furthermore, CMTM4 down-expressed remarkably in the gossypol and cyclophosphamide treated rats, the expression of the CMTM4 was up-expressed after testosterone administration. On the contrary, the expression of CMTM2 increased significantly only in gossypol treated male rats, but not in cyclophosphamide treated male rats. The expression of CMTM2 was down-expressed after testosterone administration. However, no obvious change of CMTM2 was observed in cyclophosphamide treated rats. Testosterone did not influence the expression of CKLF1, CMTM3 and CMTM5, the CMTM6, CMTM7 and CMTM8 of CMTM family were not detected in testis tissue. These demonstrated that the spermatogenesis effect of testosterone (5 mg kg(-1)) was associated with the expression of CMTM family, and CMTM2 and CMTM4 may take part in the spermatogenesis process.

Objective To determine the safety and efficacy of minimally invasive surgical treatment for post-traumatic thoracolumbar kyphosis. Methods A retrospective review was performed on seven patients with post-traumatic thoracolumbar kyphosis admitted from April 2009 to February 2010.There were four males and three females, at average age of 45.3 years. After general anesthesia, minimally invasive transarticular osteotomy and multi-level SextantTM percutaneous reduction and internal fixation were performed under QuadrantTM working tube system. The status of pain and ability was evaluated by using visual analogue scale (VAS) and Oswestry disability index (ODI). The kyphotic deformity was evaluated by using the Cobb's angle. Results The operation lasted for mean 135 minutes, with mean perioperative blood loss of 106 ml but with no any complications occurred. The mean follow -up period was 5.5 months ( range 4 -16 months ). The mean VAS score was improved from preoperative ( 7.6 ±3.5) points to postoperative (2.5 ± 1.3) points, with statistical difference (P <0.01 ). The mean ODI was improved from preoperative 53.6 ± 24.2 to postoperative 20.6 ± 6.3, with statistical difference ( P <0.01 ). The Cobb angle was also improved from preoperative ( 32. 1 ± 4.5 ) ° to postoperative ( 7.3 ±2.9 ) °, with statistical difference ( P < 0. 01 ). Conclusion Minimally invasive transarticular osteotomy under QuadrantTM working tube system is a safe and effective alternative for dealing with post-traumatic thoracolumbar kyphosis.

Objective To investigate the prevalence rate and the related risk factors of posttraumatic stress disorder ( PTSD) in the rescue paratroopers 1.5 year after Wenchuan earthquake. Methods A total of 183 rescue paratroopers who participated in disaster rescue after Wenchuan earthquake were investigated with the questionnaires composed by General state of health questionnaire, PTSD Checklist-Civilian Version ( PCL-C), Symptom Checklist-90 ( SCL-90), Self-Rating Depression Scale ( SDS) and Eysenck Personality Questionnaire (EPQ). Results Six rescue paratroopers had total PCL-C score ≥ 38 points, with the prevalence rate of PTSD for 3.28%. Total PCL-C score was positively correlated with total SCL-90 score, N score of EPQ and total SDS score (P < 0. 01), but negatively correlated with E score of EPQ. Total PCL-C score showed statistical difference between injury group and uninjury group, family loss group and family integrity group, contacting corpses group and none contacting corpses group (P<0.05 or <0.01). Regression analysis showed the length of military service, nervousness, family loss by earthquake, suffering injuries or contacting corpses during relief operations were the risk factors for PTSD. Conclusion The prevalence rate of PTSD in the rescue paratroopers is higher than that in normal troops (0.49% ) 1.5 year after Wenchuan earthquake, indicating that further attention should be paid to the rescue paratroopers in later period after earthquake.

[Objective] To investigate the effect of mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPK) on cerebral ischemia induced by photothrombosis in Swedish amyloid precursor protein (APP/SWE) transgenic mice.[Methods] In APP/SWE transgenic mice and non-transgenic mice (n = 12,respectively),photothrombotic stroke was induced,on 7 d after cerebral ischemia, the amount of the survival neuron in the penumbra was counted using Nissl staining (n = 6),and the activities of p38MAPK and JNK were measured by Western blot (n = 6).[Results] On 7 d after cerebral ischemia, ratio of amount of survival neuron over the penumbra in hippocampus in the ischemic side to that in the non-ischemic side in the non-transgenic mice group (78.3 ± 1.3)% was significantly higher than that in the APP/SWE transgenic mice group (70.5 ± 1.4)% (P < 0.05);compared with the non-ischemic hemisphere, the activities of p38 MAPK and JNK increased significantly in the ischemic hemisphere in the APP/SWE transgenic mice group (P < 0.05),whereas,there was no significant difference between ischemic and non-ischemic hemisphere in the non-transgenic mice group (P > 0.05).[Conclusion] Photothrombosis causes more severe damage in the APP/SWE transgenic mice group than that in the non-transgenic mice group. The possible mechanism includes the increased activities of MAPK which enhance the process of neuronal cell apoptosis.

Objective To study the effect of Exendin-4 on oxidative stress and neural apoptosis following spinal cord injury (SCI). Methods Adult male SD rats, with weight between 200-250 g, were randomly divided into three groups (12 in each group):Sham group, SCI group and Exendin-4 group (Ex-4 group). Rats in Sham group achieved spinal cord exposure. SCI group and Ex-4 group were induced according to Allen′s test (using a weight-drop device). Rats in Ex-4 group were ad?ministrated with Exendin-4 (10 μg/rat) through intraperitoneal injection immediately after establishment of SCI models. Rats in Sham group and SCI group were given the same volume of normal saline solution instead. Level of malondialdehyde (MDA) and the activity of catalase (CAT) were assessed in spinal cord tissues 24 hour after drug administrations. Neural apoptosis was detected by TUNEL staining and the expression levels of caspase-9 and AIF were determined using Western blot. Results Compared with Sham group, the levels of MDA, caspase-9 and AIF as well as neuronal apoptosis rate in?creased obviously, while activity of CAT decreased markedly in SCI group(P<0.01). Compared with SCI group, the levels of MDA, caspase-9 and AIF as well as the neuronal apoptosis rate decreased obviously, while activity of CAT increased re?markably in Exendin-4 group(P < 0.01). Conclusion Exendin-4 restrain neural apoptosis following spinal cord injury through relieving oxidative damage.

Objective To investigate the effects of edaravone (EDA) on cell apoptosis induced by endoplasmic reticu?lum stress (ESR) after spinal cord injury (SCI) in rats. Methods Thirty-six healthy adult SD rats were randomly divided in?to three groups (12 rats for each group):Sham group, SCI group and EDA group. The rat model of SCI was made by Allen’s method and the sham group was only received laminectomy and kept the spinal cord intact. Rats in sham group and SCI group accepted the same volume and frequency of saline injection as EDA group. The EDA group was given 10 mg/kg EDA once every 12 h intraperitoneally. Three days after injuring, the spinal cords were harvested, and the protein levels of C/EBP homologous protein (CHOP), Cleaved caspase-12 and Cleaved caspase-3 were detected by Western blot assay. Immunofluo?rescence staining was used to analyze the positive ratio of caspase-12 and CHOP in spinal cord of three groups. Meanwhile, TUNEL staining was used to identify cell apoptosis of spinal cord. Results Compared with sham group, the protein levels of CHOP, Cleaved caspase-12 and Cleaved caspase-3 were obviously higher in SCI group (P<0.01);the proportion of Cas?pase-12 and CHOP positive cells was significantly increased (P<0.01), and the apoptotic rates were also significantly in?creased in spinal cord (P<0.01). However, compared with SCI group, the protein levels of CHOP , Cleaved caspase-12 and Cleaved caspase-3 were significantly decreased in EDA group (P<0.01);the proportion of Caspase-12 and CHOP positive cells was significantly reduced (P<0.01), and the apoptotic rates were also significantly decreased in spinal cord (P<0.01). Conclusion EDA has neuroprotective potential to spinal cord injury. The mechanism of its neuroprotective effect may asso?ciate with its inhibitory effect to the cell apoptosis induced by endoplasmic reticulum stress after SCI.
