The relation between the critical radius and the particle size distribution for generalized Ostwald type ripening processes whereby the mass transfer coefficient is modelled by a power law was derived. The critical radius is determined by the growth rate, the mass transfer coefficient and the mass balance, and is independent of whether the limiting stationary growth regime has been obtained.

BACKGROUND: The commonly used culture methods for primary intervertebral disc cells are type Ⅱcol agenase alone digestion method, and type Ⅱ col agenase combined trypin digestion method. However, the acquired cells are few. OBJECTIVE: To acquire nucleus pulposus cells from human degenerative intervertebral disc using a systemic and simplified method. METHODS: Nucleus pulposus cells were isolated and cultured. The morphology of nucleus pulposus cells was observed under inverted phase contrast microscope every day. Primary and subcultured cellsuspension was applied for the determination of cel viability using trypan blue staining. The cel growth was detected with MTT assay. The cel morphology was observed under laser confocal microscopy. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: Nucleus pulposus cells were successful y isolated from from human degenerative intervertebral disc using the improved method, and cells were subcultured to passage 3. Primary cells were fusiform shaped, while cells at passage 1 and 2 were triangle or polygonal, which were similar to fibroblasts. When cells almost reached the confluence, the cells showed slabstone-like appearance. Trypan blue staining showed that, the primary cel viability was 99%, and passage 3 cells had 93%-95% viability. The proliferation of nucleus pulposus cells gradual y decreased as the generation increased. Compared with passage 1 cells, passage 2 and 3 cells at logarithmic phase trended to be smoother. The cel morphology observed under laser confocal microscopy was similar to the results under phase contrast microscope. The improved simple method can successful y acquire a variety of cells from human degenerative intervertebral disc, and these cells show fine biological properties.

Chinese Journal of Cancer 2012;31(8):359-363
The DNA damage response is critical for cells to maintain genome stability and survival. In this review, we discuss approaches to targeting critical elements of the DNA damage response for radiosensitization and chemosensitization. In addition, we also discuss strategies for targeting DNA damage response and DNA repair defects in cancer cells for synthetic lethality.

Objective To investigate the clinical effects of ulinastatin in treating extensive burns patients of shock period. Methods 15 patients with extensive burns were assigned to the treatment group(8 eases)and the control group(7 cases)randomly, patients in the control group were given the routine therapy, while those in the treatment group Were also given ulinastatin in the early stage of shock period. The life symptoms, urine amount, shock lasting time and complications were observed in the fourth day after injury. Results Compared to the control group, the life symptoms were steadier, urine amount was more of equivalent, shock lasting time was shorter, and complications were less in the treatment group. Conclusion In the early stage of the shock period for extensive burns patients, ulinastatin can help the patients live through the shock period steady.

Purpose To investigate the occurrence of echinoderm microtubule-associated protein-like 4 (EML4) gene and the anaplas-tic lymphoma kinase (ALK) gene rearrangements in lung squamous cell carcinomas (SCC), and to provide with a test for targeted therapy of SCC. Methods In this study, we analyzed ALK protein expression with a specific rabbit monoclonal Ig antibody ( D5F3 clone) in 219 cases of lung SCC. The positive cases were confirmed with ALK fluorescence in situ hybridization ( FISH) . Results 4 out of 219 (1. 8%) cases of lung SCC were ALK positive detected by immunohistochemistry (IHC) staining, which were confirmed by ALK FISH. Conclusions There are SCC having EML4-ALK gene rearrangement. The response of SCC patients with ALK expression to targeted therapy of Crizotinib should be explored. Strong positive expression of ALK protein can be interpreted as EML4-ALK gene rearrangement.

OBJECTIVETo evaluate percutaneous reduction by Kirschner pin and internal fixation with cancellous screw and plate through minimal incision at the lateral side of heel for the treatment of intra-articular displacement fracture of calcaneus.
METHODSFrom September 2009 to June 2012, 80 patients with close intra-articular displacement fractures of calcaneus were divided into treatment group and control group. There were 40 patients in the control group, including 21 males and 19 females, ranging in age from 23 to 64 years old, averaged (39.1 +/-11.7) years old; and the patients were treated with fixation by compress screws and plates of self-broken type. There were 40 patients in the treatment group, including 24 males and 16 females, ranging in age from 21 to 67 years old, averaged (39.6+/-14.3) years old;and the patients were treated with full thread cancellous screws and plates fixation. The fixation time,intra-operative blood loss and the number of injured medial plntar nerve were compared between the two groups. The Böhler angle, Gissane angle and the correction degree of calcaneal width were measured at 1 year after operation. The internal fixators were taken out after 1 year. The AOFAS ankle-hindfoot score was used to evaluate therapeutic effects.
RESULTSAll the patients were followed up,and the duration ranged from 9 to 32 months, with a mean of 16 months. There were shorter operation time, less injury, satisfactory postoperative Böhler angle and calcaneal width in treatment group compared with control group, which reduced the medial neurovascular injuries, and the plate was easily removed after fracture healing.
CONCLUSIONFull thread cancellous screws and plate fixation for the treatment of calcaneal fractures could get same therapeutic effects as compress screws and plate of self-broken type fixation, and also has follow advantages: shortening the operation time, reducing blood loss, easily to be removed, avoiding the medial neurovascular damage, reducing the incidence of complications.
