Objective To evaluate the effect of health education in controlling the iodine deficiency diserders(IDD) in order to provide reference data for the further prevention and control. Methods Each village of 3 towns in Congjiang County was selected in 2007, where the health education lasting for 10 months had been implemented in the school students of 3-6 grade and the villagers. The school students of 3-6 grade and 30 housewives in the villagers were investigated for their IDD control knowledge, the salt consuming conditions as well as the sales of both rough and fine salt at a salt retail site in each village before and after the health education was implemented. Results The awareness rate of the knowledge of IDD control in the students and housewives was 91.4% (581/636) and 78.3% (282/360), respectively after intervention, which significantly increased (χ2= 532.044, 326.117, both P < 0.01) compared with the rate of 28.2% (184/652) and 11.4% (41/360) before intervention. The proportion of consuming fine salt was 91.8%(146/159) and 95.6%(86/90), significantly inereased(χ2= 236.623, 135.350, both P < 0.01) compared with 6.1%(10/163) and 7.8% (7/90) found before intervention. The selling proportion of fine salt at the salt retail site in the village was 60.0%(900/1500), significantly increased(χ2= 824.176, P < 0.01) compared with 10.0%(150/1500) before intervention. Conclusions Health education and promotion is solid foundation for effectively controlling IDD, through which the students and villagers are actively and voluntarily involved in the program and hence have formed good living and hygiene habits, thus expected effect has been obtained.

ObjectiveTo survey 0—6 years old disabled children in Guiyang.Methods4 999 children aged 0—6 years old chosen randomly from 9 145 children of 12 blocks were investigated with the disability sampling survey criteria of 1987.ResultsThe rate of disabled children in Guiyang was 1.58%, and was not significantly different compared with that of whole country (1.36%) and other three areas including Siping City (P>0.05),but significantly higher than that of other six districts including Heping district of Tianjin municipality (P<0.05). All kinds of disability found by this survey were separately intellectual disability (0.92%),comprehensive disability (0.28%),limb disability (0.24%),vision disability (0.10%),psychiatric disability (0.03%),and hearing disability (0.02%). Rates of intellectual and vision disabilities were significantly higher than that of whole country ( P>0.05).ConclusionSome diseases are directly relative to occurrence of disability. The poor income of the children family, lower education of his parents and not gotten preschool education were risk factors of disability. The institution based rehabilitation and community based rehabilitation are main rehabilitation forms to disabled children.

AIMTo study the characteristics of neural information encoding of the epileptic networks involved caudate-putamen(CPu) and the hippocampi induced by tetanization of the right CPu in rats.
METHODSExperiments were performed on 59 SD rats. Acute or chronic tetanization of the right CPu (ATRC or CTRC) (60Hz,0.4-0.6 mA, 2 s) was used to induce rat epilepsy.
RESULTS(1) The bursting or primary unit afterdischarges of single neurons were asymmetric in dual hippocampi induced by the ATRC. (2) Continuous sharp waves were observed in ipsilateral or contralateral CPu induced by the CTRC. The oscillatory network seizures with phase shift appeared between two sharp waves in ipsilateral CPu. The frequency of oscillatory waves was negatively correlated with the time and fluctuated from 70 Hz to 110 Hz, then to 35 Hz, and finally to 30 Hz. (3) In the contralateral side primary network after discharges in the CPu were induced by the CTRC. Therefore, the characteristic primary network afterdischarges could be shifted from the CPu or to the HPC, but amplified. On the other hand, HPC sharp waves could be depressed when the CPu network seizures occurred.
CONCLUSIONThe reestablishment of CPu-hippocampal epileptic networks could be transhemispherically promoted by over-activation of the right CPu network, in which bilateral hippocampal neuronal network and CPu neural network were involved in some particular pathophysiological information encoding.

OBJECTIVETo investigate effect of connective tissue growth factors (CTGF) on secretion of extracellular matrix synthesis of meniscal fibrochondrocytes, expression of vascular endothelial growth factors (VEGF), and angiogenesis during the repair of meniscal tearing damage.
METHODSMeniscal fibrochondrocytes were isolated from the inner--1/2 of rabbits' meniscus by collagenase enzymatic digestion, centrifugal separation, and treated with 100 ng/ml CTGF in vitro. Characterization of fibrochondrocytes was identified by flow cytometry analysising CD31, CD44, CD45 and CD105, and was further tested by type II collagen immunocytochemistry. Changes in gene expression of meniscal fibrochondrocytes were monitored by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction. In vitro, the sections of the 3 mm of the longitudinal teared in the middle of the rabbit's meniscus, and then the defects were dealed with simple suture, suture and implanting with PBS-fibrin glue, sutured and implanting with 1.5 microg CTGF respectively. Expression and distribution of type I and II collagen and VEGF, the tearing healing were observed by fluorescence-immunohistochemisty analysis on the 1st week, the 4th week and the 10th week.
RESULTSQuantitative RT-PCR assays showed that type I and type II collagen, and VEGF mRNA expression in the 100 ng/ml CTGF group had been remarkably enhanced than in the PBS group on the 14th day. Consistent with these effects in vitro, fluorescence-immunohistochemical analysis revealed that in the group implanted with CTGF-fibrin glue, type I collagen, type I collagen and capillaries completely filled the defect on the 10th week postoperatively. In contrast, only soft tissue repair occurred after the PBS-fibrin glue was implanted.
CONCLUSIONCTGF can significantly promote extracellular matrix (I collagen, II collagen) of the meniscal avascular zone synthesis, and CTGF can greatly heighten the expression of VEGF activity at the same time in vitro, so that it can further enhance the repair of meniscal tearing damage in the avascular zone.

OBJECTIVETo evaluate the feasibility of cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) for the evaluation of trabecular bone structure in mandibular condyle and to investigate the distribution of the trabecular bone structure within mandibular condyle.
METHODSEighty condyles from 40 healthy young volunteers (aged 20-32) were scanned by CBCT. A coronoid image was acquired of each condyle and divided into 8 regions where regions of interest were specified. After CBCT images were binarized, four morphological parameters including bone volume fraction, trabecular thickness, trabecular number and trabecular separation were computed.
RESULTSAll parameters were significantly different between the superior zone and middle/inferior zone of the condyle (P < 0.05). Superior zone showed the largest bone volume fraction (52.2%), the highest trabecular number (1.33 mm(-1)), the thinnest trabecular thickness (393.48 microm), and the smallest trabecular separation (361.59 microm). Inferior zone showed the smallest bone volume fraction (49.64%). These results were not significantly different between bilateral sides of the condyles (P > 0.05).
CONCLUSIONSTrabecular bone structure was inhomogeneous within the condyle, but symmetrical between bilateral sides of the condyles. CBCT combined with image processing is a feasible tool in evaluating trabecular bone structure of human mandibular condyle.

OBJECTIVESTo detect the levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS), superoxide dismutase(SOD) and interleukin 8(IL-8) in seminal plasma of infertile patients, and evaluate the possible relationship between those levels.
METHODSSemen was collected from normal donors (15 cases), infertile men without infection (16 cases), and infertile men with infection (leukocytospermia, 11 cases). The routine analysis of semen was accomplished, and then the levels of IL-8, malondialdehyde (MDA), SOD, and white blood cell (WBC) were examined. The correlative analysis between the level of ROS and other parameters in these populations was made.
RESULTSIn leukocytospermic group, the levels of MDA, WBC, and IL-8 were higher than those in the other two groups (P < 0.001). Significantly positive correlation was observed between IL-8 and MDA (r = 0.852, P < 0.001) and between the levels of IL-8 and WBC.
CONCLUSIONSThese findings suggest that increased oxidative stress in patients with leukocytospermia may cause the increase of IL-8(r = 0.818, P < 0.01). The increased oxidative stress may be due to defect in ROS scavenging system.

OBJECTIVETo study lymph node micrometastases (LNMM), expression of nm23-H(1), MMP(9), TIMP(2) proteins, and their relationship and clinical significance in patients with stage Dukes B colorectal cancer.
METHODSThirty patients with stage Dukes B colorectal cancer were studied. LNMM in these patients was detected by immunohistochemical anti-cytokeratin 20 (CK20) staining. The expression of nm23-H(1), MMP(9) and TIMP(2) proteins in primary tumors was examined by Strept-avidin-biotin complex method. Clinical-pathological data and survival of each patient were recorded and analyzed.
RESULTS(1) The positive dyeing of CK20 was observed in 26.7% for cases and in 7.8% for lymph nodes of 30 patients with stage Dukes B colorectal cancer. (2) Different expression of nm23-H(1) and MMP(9) proteins in the patients between stage Dukes B and stage Dukes CD was observed (P < 0.05). The decreased nm23-H(1) expression, and/or the increased MMP(9) expression in primary stage Dukes B tumors were significantly associated with LNMM (P < 0.05). Sensitivity and specificity for detection of LNMM by using nm23-H(1) or MMP(9) were respectively 62.5% and 81.8% or 75.0% and 69.8%. If by combining nm23-H(1) with MMP(9), specificity for detection of LNMM became 90.9%. The expression of TIMP(2) protein was not related with stage Dukes and LNMM. (3) The percent of tumor recurrence and/or metastasis for the stage Dukes B patients with LNMM was significantly higher than that for the patients without LNMM (P < 0.05), but the survival percent for the patients with LNMM was significantly lower than that for the patients without LNMM. The outcome for the patients with nm23-H(1) (-) LNMM (+) or MMP(9) (+) LNMM (+) was significantly worse than that for patients with nm23-H(1) (+) LNMM (-) or MMP(9) (+) LNMM (-) (P < 0.05).
CONCLUSIONSLNMM is detected by immunohistochemical anti-CK20 staining. The expression of nm23-H(1) and MMP(9) in primary stage Dukes B tumors was significantly associated with LNMM. The outcome in the LNMM patients with nm23-H(1) (-) and/or MMP(9) (+) were worse. Combining examination of CK20 for lymph nodes with expression of nm23-H(1) and MMP(9) for primary tumors is of important clinical significance for staging of Dukes, selection of adjuvant treatment and evaluation of prognosis in patients with colorectal cancer.
