15 rat dams were divided into 2 groups: selenium treated group drank water containing 2 ppm selenium during pregnancy and breast-feeding period, control group drank tap water. The concentration of selenium in brain tissue for dams were 0.73 ?0.11 (Se-treated) and 0.54 ?0.09 ug/g wet tissue (control), for neonates 0.32?0.02 (Se-treated) and 0.25 ? 0.03 (control), and for 20 days old pups 0.53?0.04 (Se-treated) and 0.44?0.06 (control). The results showed that the selenium administered orally could be transfered through placenta or blood-brain barrier of fetus, young pup and adult rat.

Safety and Health at Work 2024;15(1):33-41
Background:
Dust generated during the processing of building materials enterprises can pose a serious health risk. The study aimed to compare and analyze the results of ART and the Monte Carlo model for the dust exposure assessment in building materials enterprises, to derive the application scope of the two models.
Methods:
First, ART and the Monte Carlo model were used to assess the exposure to dust in each of the 15 building materials enterprises. Then, a comparative analysis of the exposure assessment results was conducted. Finally, the model factors were analyzed using correlation analysis and the scope of application of the models was determined.
Results:
The results show that ART is mainly influenced by four factors, namely, localized controls, segregation, dispersion, surface contamination, and fugitive emissions, and applies to scenarios where the workplace information of the building materials enterprises is specific and the average dust concentration is greater than or equal to 1.5 mg/m3. The Monte Carlo model is mainly influenced by the dust concentration in the workplace of building materials enterprises and is suitable for scenarios where the dust concentration in the workplace of the building materials enterprises is relatively uniform and the average dust concentration is less than or equal to 6mg/m3.
Conclusion
ART is most accurate when workplace information is specific and average dust concentration is > 1.5 mg/m3; whereas, The Monte Carlo model is the best when dust concentration is homogeneous and average dust concentration is < 6 mg/m3.

Objective:
To investigate the association of ambient fine particulate matters (PM2.5) exposure with anxiety in middle-aged and elderly people in China.
Methods:
Using a stratified random sampling method, 5 997 middle-aged and elderly people (aged 40-89) who resided in the region for more than 2 years and had no hearing or language impairment were selected from 32 districts/counties in the key areas for air pollution prevention and control in China from October 10th, 2017 to February 7th, 2018. Information about demographic characteristics, socioeconomic factors and health status were collected by questionnaire survey and physical examination. The anxiety symptoms were assessed by 7-item Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scales. Three-year moving average concentrations of PM2.5 were calculated to estimate exposure level. The multivariate logistic regression model was conducted to assess the association between PM2.5 exposure and anxiety. The interaction of age, gender, overweight, education, smoking, drinking and chronic diseases was also analyzed by likelihood ratio test.
Results:
There were 2 995 (49.94%) males subjects, 4 092 (68.23%) subjects with education of secondary school or above and 2 576 (42.95%) subjects with self-reported chronic diseases among the 5 997 middle-aged and elder participants. The prevalence of anxiety was 6.64% (

The establishment of the endometrial receptive state, the implantation of activated blastocysts, and the decidualization of the uterine stroma are essential conditions for successful implantation in mammals and play decisive roles for subsequent pregnancy outcomes. The Wnt signaling pathway is associated with a variety of key functions such as proliferation, differentiation, apoptosis, and regeneration.During the embryo implantation, the Wnt signaling pathway plays an indispensable role.Studies have shown that the abnormal expression of Wnt signaling pathway can lead to endometriosis, endometrial cancer, and other reproductive diseases that seriously affect human health and quality of life.In this article we summarize the roles of Wnt signaling pathway in the establishment of uterine receptivity, blastocyst activation, embryo implantation, and decidualization and its regulatory mechanisms.

Chinese Journal of Biotechnology 2023;39(5):2053-2069
In recent years, the petroleum-based plastic pollution problem has been causing global attention. The idea of "degradation and up-cycling of plastics" was proposed for solving the environmental pollution caused by non-degradable plastics. Following this idea, plastics would be firstly degraded and then reconstructed. Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) can be produced from the degraded plastic monomers as a choice to recycle among various plastics. PHA, a family of biopolyesters synthesized by many microbes, have attracted great interest in industrial, agricultural and medical sectors due to its biodegradability, biocompatibility, thermoplasticity and carbon neutrality. Moreover, the regulations on PHA monomer compositions, processing technology, and modification methods may further improve the material properties, making PHA a promising alternative to traditional plastics. Furthermore, the application of the "next-generation industrial biotechnology (NGIB)" utilizing extremophiles for PHA production is expected to enhance the PHA market competitiveness, promoting this environmentally friendly bio-based material to partially replace petroleum-based products, and achieve sustainable development with carbon-neutrality. This review summarizes the basic material properties, plastic upcycling via PHA biosynthesis, processing and modification methods of PHA, and biosynthesis of novel PHA.
