Journal of Applied Clinical Pediatrics 1992;0(06):-
Objective To study the mutagenic action of antiepileptic drugs(AEDs), and find an effective way to prevent the mutagenesis induced by AEDs,by observing the effects of AEDs on serum folic acid(FA) level and sister chromatid exchange (SCE) frequency in epileptic children. Methods Ninty epileptic children were divided into different groups on the basis of the different drugs they had taken, then detected the two indexes at different time points. Results The serum FA level and SCE frequency of the patients significantly decreased and increased after they took carbamazepine (CBZ) and valproic acid (VPA)respectively. The two indexes went back respectively when supplied with FA.Conclusions Both CBZ and VPA possess mutagenic action, yet nitrazepam does not.FA may help repair the chromosome damage and reduce the mutagenesis effects.

To establish the electricity plate digestion and inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) method for determination of 33 inorganic elements in human hair.
METHODS:
Lithium (6Li), Germanium (72Ge), Yttrium (89Y), Indium (115In), and Terbium (159Tb) were used as internal standards. The electric heating board digestion in a mixture of nitric acid and hydrogen peroxide was used as the pre-treatment of the hair. Thirty-three inorganic elements in human hair were analyzed by ICP-MS method.
RESULTS:
The detection limit of ICP-MS was 0.0001 microg/g(Th)-10.9 microg/g (Ca) and the limit of quantitation was 0.0005 microg/g (Th)-25 microg/g (Ca). The recovery rate of this method was 86%-113%. The RSD for the intra-day and inter-day were less than 9.2%. The method was not statistically different from microwave digestion method.
CONCLUSION
This method is highly efficient and accurate. It can be used for analysis of 33 inorganic elements in human hair.

Chinese Medical Journal 2007;120(16):1438-1443
BACKGROUNDOlfactory ensheathing cells (OECs) can promote many kinds of neuron growth and axonal extension. The aim of the study was to investigate the effects of co-culturing with OECs on neuron apoptosis in vitro.
METHODSApoptosis was induced by treatment of cultured dorsal root ganglion neurons with 1 mmol/L hydrogen peroxide (H(2)O(2)). Cells were randomly arranged into the following treatment groups. In group 1, OECs at different density (10(4)/ml to 8 x 10(5)/ml) were added immediately after H(2)O(2) treatment and cells were co-cultured for 24 hours. In group 2, OECs were added at different time points (0, 4, 8, 12 and 24 hours) after H(2)O(2) treatment. Apoptotic cell death was determined by Hoechst 33258 staining and flow cytometry (FCM). Cell viability was determined by using methyl thiazoleterazolium (MTT) assays.
RESULTSThe results showed in the Hoechest 33258 staining, FCM and MTT that OECs have both the density-dependent protection and time-dependent protection on neuron apoptosis. The apoptosis decreased and the dorsal root ganglion neuron viability increased, when the density of OECs was increased in co-culture groups. But further increasing OEC density above 2 x 10(5)/ml (i.e. 8 x 10(5)/ml) failed to exert additional protection. As the interval between adding H(2)O(2) and adding OECs was increased, the amounts of apoptosis cells were also increased. When OECs were added 24 hours after H(2)O(2), no significant protection was observed.
CONCLUSIONThese results indicated that OECs could protect dorsal root ganglion neurons from apoptosis induced by H(2)O(2) in a density- and time-dependent manner.

Chinese Journal of School Health 2024;45(7):998-1002
Objective:
To investigate the influencing factors of depressive symptoms and to construct and verify the prediction model of depressive symptoms in middle school students, so as to provide risk assessment tools for effectively screening depressive symptom.
Methods:
Physical examination and questionnaire survey were conducted among middle school students in one city in Guangdong Province from September to October in 2021 ( n =2 376) and from September to October in 2022 ( n =4 344) by a multistage cluster sampling method, and a nomographic prediction model of depressive symptoms in middle school student was constructed. The questionnaire survey was conducted using the student health status and influencing factors questionnaire (secondary school version) and the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale (CES-D) to measure the lifestyle and depressive symptom of middle school students.
Results:
The detection rate of depressive symptoms in 2021 was 23.3%. Multivariate Logistic regression analysis showed that irregular breakfast ( OR =2.64), school bullying ( OR =4.28), being beaten by parents ( OR =2.86), using mobile devices for a long time ( OR =1.08) and sitting for a long time ( OR =1.05) were positively related to depressive symptoms in middle school students ( P <0.05). Long sleep duration ( OR =0.78) and outdoor activity durations of 1-<2, 2-<3 and ≥3 h/d (compared with <1 h/d, OR =0.63, 0.61, 0.49) were negatively related to depressive symptoms in middle school students ( P < 0.05 ). Multivariate Logistic regression analysis showed that 7 statistically signifucant predictive factors constructed a nomogram, and the AUC of the nomogram was 0.77, which had been verified internally and externally with good differentiation and reliability.
Conclusions
The nomogram prediction model of depressive symptoms provides a convenient and effective risk assessment tool for depressive symptoms among middle school students. The life behavior, diet behavior and injury behavior of middle school students play an important role in the formation of depressive symptoms. It should pay attention to the impact of the behavioral factors on the mental health of middle school students.
