OBJECTIVETo investigate the prognosis of adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) in minor salivary glands and its influencing factors.
METHODSClinical data of 52 patients with ACC in minor salivary glands were reviewed. The distribution of stage was as follows: stage I (6%), stage II (21%), stage III (27%) and stage IV (46%). Counting data was analyzed by χ(2) test or Fisher's exact. Survival rates were calculated by Kaplan-Merier method. Statistical significance of differences in the cumulative survival curves was evaluated using the Log-rank test. Multivariate analysis was performed by Cox proportional hazard model.
RESULTSAll patients underwent primary tumor radical resection, 39 patients (75%) received postoperative radiation. The regional recurrence rate was 37% and distant metastasis rate was 21%. The 5-, 10-year cumulative local control rate were 68% and 63% respectively. The 5-, 10-year cumulative distant control rate were 86%, 68% respectively. The 5-, 10-year tumor specific survival rates were 70% and 54% respectively. Multivariate analysis showed that T stage, lymph node metastasis and perineural invasion were relevant to the tumor specific survival of ACC in minor salivary glands.
CONCLUSIONSRecurrence and metastasis were the main cause of treatment failure of ACC in minor salivary glands. T stage, lymph node metastasis and perineural invasion were the independent prognostic factors of ACC in minor salivary glands. Radical surgery and reasonably postoperative radiotherapy were the main treatment strategy.

Chinese Medical Journal 2011;124(8):1270-1274
Glaucoma is rarely complicated by retinitis pigmentosa (RP). To provide clinical evidences for this rare situation, we report the concurrence of these two diseases in two children of a Chinese family. In the present two-child Chinese family without positive history, the older sister presented with bilateral sector RP and coexisting chronic angle-closure glaucoma, and the brother with bilateral whole RP but without coexisting glaucoma. Clinical evidences in concurrence of variants of RP and glaucoma because of possible different gene mutations from the same genetic background represent a rare situation, which may provide clues for future researches in molecular pathogenesis of these rare diseases.

Chinese Medical Journal 2006;119(14):1210-1214
BACKGROUNDGlaucoma is one of the leading causes of blindness in the world. Primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) and primary congenital glaucoma (PCG) are subtypes of glaucoma. Myocillin is the first gene identified to be involved in POAG. Recently, myocillin mutation has been found in PCG. In this context, we reported a special glaucoma pedigree, which was composed of both PCG and POAG patients, and analyzed the mutation of myocillin in this pedigree.
METHODSThe family was composed of the parents, a son and a daughter. All members of the family underwent the complete ophthalmologic examinations. All coding exons 1 - 3 and flanking introns of myocilin gene were screened for sequence alterations by polymerase chain reaction and direct DNA sequencing.
RESULTSThe son was the proband, who was diagnosed as PCG in both eyes. The father was diagnosed as POAG in the right eye, the left eye was still normal. Both the sister and the mother of the proband had normal intraocular pressure without glaucomatous optic disc changes. The mutations in intron 2 of myocilin gene were detected in the family. While the proband and the father were homozygous, the mother and the sister were heterozygous for the mutation.
CONCLUSIONSHomozygous mutation in intron 2 of myocilin gene is involved in both POAG and PCG. It is suggested that the pathogenesis might be overlapping in POAG and PCG.

Objective:To determine the technical feasibility, intraoperative safety, and efficacy of endoscopic thyroidectomy using the gasless unilateral axillary approach. Methods:We analyzed 11 patients diagnosed with papillary thyroid carcinoma who underwent an endoscopic thyroidectomy between February and April 2017 using a gasless unilateral axillary approach at the Department of Head and Neck Surgical Oncology,Zhejiang Cancer Hospital.Additionally,we compared the clinical features, early surgical outcomes,surgi-cal complications and postoperative satisfaction of endoscopic thyroidectomy with those of 11 patients who underwent conventional open thyroidectomies during the same period.Result:In the endoscopic group, the mean age of patients((35.6±2.6)years was young-er than that of the open thyroidectomy group[(48.5±2.3)years,(P=0.002)].The endoscopic thyroidectomy(unilateral lobectomy)pro-cedure was successfully completed in all patients. The rate of central compartment neck dissection was not different between the groups[(2.4±1.7)vs.(2.8±1.6),P>0.05].The operative time was longer and the amount of drainage was higher in the endoscopic than in the open group[(123.9±28.1)min vs.(48.6±9.8)min,P<0.01;(145.9±81.8)mL vs.(87.7±18.9)mL,P<0.01].Everage length of hospi-talizntion was 1 day longer in the endoscopic group. The complication rate was not statistically significantly different between the groups. The postoperative pain score of the neck and anterior chest was not different between the groups except the anterior chest pain score at day 3 after operation. The cosmetic satisfaction was greater in the endoscopic group(P<0.01).Conclusions:Endoscopic thyroidectomy using a gasless unilateral axillary approach for the management of selected patients presenting with papillary thyroid carcinoma is a safe, feasible, and cosmetically superior procedure.
