Objective:To observe the therapeutic effect of electroacupuncture (EA) at local points plus point injection on House-Brackmann facial nerve function classification grade (H-B) and facial disability index (FDI) in pregnant women with Bell palsy (BP). Methods:A total of 40 eligible BP patients during pregnancy were randomized into a treatment group (n=20) and a control group (n=20). The treatment group was intervened by EA at Sizhukong (TE 23), Tongziliao (GB 1), Sibai (ST 2), Quanliao (SI 18), Yifeng (TE 17), Dicang (ST 4), Jiache (ST 6) and point injection at Zusanli (ST 36) and Yanglingquan (GB 34) on the affected side, 30 min every time, 10 sessions as a course, for 2 courses in total while control group by EA with the same points, manipulation and courses as the treatment group. Results:After the treatment, the H-B classification in the treatment group was better than that in the control group, with a significant inter-group difference (P<0.05); after the treatment, the change of FDI score in the treatment group was significantly different from that in the control group (P<0.05). Conclusion:EA at local points plus point injection can produce a more significant efficacy than EA in the treatment of BP during pregnancy.

Objective Few studies are reported on the clinical characteristics of glioma-related epilepsy (GRE).Postoperative recurrence of epilepsy in some patients seriously affects their recovery.We aimed to explore the duration, frequency and type of the epileptic seizure as well as possible factors for postoperative recurrence of epilepsy.Methods We recorded the frequency and duration of epileptic seizures, analyzed the recurrence-related factors using the Cox regression model, and investigated the risk factors of recurrent epilepsy.Results The postoperative recurrence of epilepsy was found in 24 (26.97%) of the 89 cases, which, compared with the 65 non-recurrence cases, had a significantly longer seizure duration (7[3-10] vs 5[2-9] min, P<0.05) and higher onset frequency (6.5[4-9] vs 5[3-9] times/mo, P<0.05) preoperatively.After surgery, the 24 recurrence cases showed a remarkably reduced seizure duration (1[0.5-2.0] min, P<0.05) and onset frequency (1.5[1-3] times/mo, P<0.05).The main risk factors for epileptic recurrence included the level of the glioma-involved site (HR=6.728, 95% CI: 2.994-15.116), peritumoral edema (>2 cm) (HR=2.867, 95% CI: 1.210-6.795), brain wave type (HR=2.501, 95% CI: 1.058-5.914), and preoperative frequency of epileptic seizure (>6 times/mo) (HR=5.100, 95% CI: 2.437-10.677).Conclusion Postoperative recurrence of epilepsy is associated with the clinical pathological parameters, and the changes of the frequency and duration of epileptic seizures before and after surgery may provide some new theoretical reference for the treatment and prognosis of the disease.

AIM: Accommodation is one of the most important functions of human eye, while its mechanism is still under discussion. This paper aimed to study accommodation mechanism with numerical simulation.METHODS: A simulation model was constructed to study the mechanism of accommodation based on the experimental data derived from published resources. The displacement and pressure are applied on the model to study the deformation of lens during accommodating.RESULTS: The simulation showed that, as the eye was accommodating, the thickness of the lens increased linearly,and the lens diameter decreased linearly. The optical power of the lens increased as the accommodation increased. This result was accord with the public facts in accommodation.Furthermore, the pressure was found to have a great influence on the shape of the lens and the optical power. The lens became thinner and flatter as the pressure increased and the pressure caused a remarkable increase of lens' optical power.CONCLUSION: The outcome of this paper is consistent with the Helmholtz's hypothesis on accommodation to some extent. The analytical model presented in this paper can be used in the theoretical study of the accommodation mechanism of the human lens.

Aim To investigate the effects of chronic corticos-terone injection on anxiety and depression-like behavior of tree shrews, evaluate the predictability of drug and establish a novel animal model of anxious depression .Methods Twelve Chinese and Burma tree shrews were randomly divided into normal group, model group and venlafaxine group .The anxious depres-sion model of tree shrew was established by chronic corticoster-one injection ( ih, 27 mg· kg-1 , 21 d) .The venlafaxine group received intragastric administration (6 mg· kg-1).Autonomous activity score, sugar water preference test and Morris water maze test were used to evaluate the anxiety and depression-like behav-ior of tree shrews .The expressions of CRH , ACTH and COR in the tree shrew plasma were determined by Elisa kit .The con-tents of monoamine neurotransmitters of tree shrews in the hippo-campus , amygdala and prefrontal cortex were detected by HPLC-ECD.Results Compared with the normal group , the autono-mous activity score , sugar water partial eclipse degree and the learning and memory ability significantly decreased (P<0.01), while the contents of CRH , ACTH and COR significantly in-creased ( P<0.05) , and the contents of 5-HT, NE and DA in the hippocampus , amygdala and prefrontal cortex declined in the model group(P<0.05).In the venlafaxine group, the learning and memory abilities of the tree shrews were improved , the lev-els of CRH and COR in plasma were significantly decreased ( P<0.05), and the contents of 5-HT, NE and DA were increased (P<0.05).Conclusions The tree shrews of anxious depres-sion have obvious HPA axis hyperactivity and monoamine neuro-transmitter disorder , and venlafaxine can reverse this phenome-non, indicating that the tree shrews model of anxious depression has drug predictability , which is a kind of novel animal model of anxious depression closer to human in clinic .

Objective To optimize antimicrobial use process,ensure the rational use of preoperative antimicrobial prophylaxis during consecutive operations.Methods Antimicrobial use process in a hospital in December 2015 was optimized,6 072 cases of consecutive operations in May-November 2015 were selected as control group,5 832 cases of consecutive operations in December 2015-May 2016 were as trial group,the qualified rate of rational use of antimicrobial agents was compared between two groups,causes for delayed/prior use was analyzed.Results Before and after the optimization of antimicrobial use process,rates of antimicrobial use were 77.16％ and 78.80％ respectively,there was significant difference between two groups(x2 =8.305,P =0.004).After the optimization of antimicrobial use process,rate of antimicrobial use within 0.5-1 hour was significantly higher than that before the optimization (82.36％ vs 41.11％);rate of antimicrobial use ＜0.5 hour before skin incision decreased from 57.11％ before optimization to 4.32％ after optimization;but rate of antimicrobial use ＞1 hour before skin incision increased from 1.78％ to 13.32％.Causes for delay/prior use of antimicrobial agents was due to the lack of effective communication between doctors and nurses,which resulted in circuit nurses' inaccurate assessment on interval of consecutive operations(62.13％),the duration of intubation or puncture was too long for anesthesiologists (13.57％).Conclusion Optimizing antimicrobial use process in consecutive operations can improve prophylactic antimicrobial use rate within 0.5-1 hour,and is helpful for ensuring the efficacy of antimicrobial prophylaxis.

Objective To investigate the characteristics of and relationship between occlusal plane and masticatory path in young adults with individual normal occlusion, and to provide clinical implications on both morphological and functional reference of occlusal plane location Methods Forty-three young adults with individual normal occlusion were included. Lateral projections of cephalometric radiographs were taken. The parameters of anatomical landmarks were analyzed. The BioEGN mandibular kinesiography analyzer was used to record the path of incisal edge of mandibular central incisor movement during mastication. The Pearson's linear correlation analysis was performed to analyze the relationship of inclination of occlusal plane and data mentioned above with SPSS13. 0 software. Results The inclination of occlusal plane (the angle between occlusal plane and Camper's line OP-CP) was (2. 1 ± 3. 8) ° in youth with normal occlusion. Means of maximal distances of 3-dimensional masticatory mandibular movement paths were as follow; the vertical length was ( 20. 22 ± 4. 28) mm, the anterior-posterior width was ( 11.42 ± 2. 45) mm, and the lateral width was (8. 62 ± 1. 52) mm. The inclination of occlusal plane was negatively correlated to the lateral width of masticatory path in frontal plane (r = -0. 39, P <0. 05). Occlusal plane was approximately vertical to the opening and closing path in the vicinity of intercuspal position during mastication. The inclination of occlusal plane was positively related to occlusal plane-closing angles in the upper segments of closing path during mastication(P<0. 05). Masticatory axis angle was (66. 50 ±7. 98)° with no significant correlation to the inclination of occlusal plane (P >0. 05).Conclusions These results suggest that the sagittal inclination of occlusal plane can influence 3-dimensional morphology of masticatory path. The inclination of occlusal plane has a guiding effect on masticatory movement in the upper segments of closing path.

OBJECTIVETo investigate the changes in perioperative expression level of CD11/CD18 of neutrophils in children undergoing cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB).

METHODSThirty children patients with congenital heart disease underwent cardiac surgery with CPB (CPB group) and the control group consisted of 20 children who received thoracic or general surgery without CPB. Blood samples were drawn at the following time points: pre-surgery, 15 min after onset of CPB, immediately after CPB, 2 h after surgery and on the 1st, 2nd, 3rd postoperative day. D11/CD18 expression on neutrophils and serum concentration of IL-6 and IL-8 were analyzed by flow cytometry and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, respectively.

RESULTIn CPB group plasma levels of IL-6 and IL-8 increased significantly and peaked at 2 h after initiation of CPB (P<0.05), and descended to the after-anesthesia level at 3rd day after operation. In non-CPB group there was a similar trend of changes in IL-6 and IL-8, but to a much lesser extent. The level of CD11b/CD18 in CPB group began to increase significantly and peaked at 15 min after initiation of CPB (P <0.05), and descended to the after-anesthesia level at 2 h after operation. There was no significant changes of CD11b/CD18 in control group (P >0.05). No significant differences were detected at any time points with respect to expression of CD11a/CD18 and CD11c/CD18 in both groups (P >0.05).

CONCLUSIONCPB surgery of children can cause increasing of the CD11b/CD18 expression level of neutrophil but has no significant effect on CD11a/CD18 and CD11c/CD18. CD11b/CD18 may play an important role in the systemic inflammation induced by CPB.

OBJECTIVEMultidrug resistance (MDR) is one of the primary causes of suboptimal outcomes in chemotherapy of children with acute myeloblastic leukemia (AML). The mechanisms of drug transport resistance may chiefly contribute to MDR. Expression and/or activity of P-glycoprotein (P-gp), multiple resistance-associated protein-1 (MRP1), lung-resistance related protein (LRP) and breast cancer resistance protein (BCRP) have been considered to be associated with unfavourable outcomes in pediatric AML patients. In previous studies, we found WASP-family verprolin-homologous protein-1 (WAVE1) was involved in the MDR mechanisms in K562/A02 leukemia cells. To investigate the expression of WAVE1, P-gp, MRP1, LRP/MVP and BCRP; and if WAVE1 is involved in MDR of human leukemia cell.

METHODSWAVE1, P-gp, MRP1, LRP, BCRP mRNA and protein expression in bone marrow mononuclear cells (BMMCs) were measured by real-time fluorescence quantitative PCR (RQ-PCR) and Western blot in a cohort of 52 children with acute myeloblastic leukemia. During follow-up, of the 52 patients, 21 were documented as being relapsing or refractory, and 31 were induced into complete continuous remission. Furthermore, HL60 cells and HL60/ADR cells were transiently transfected with PCDNA3.1-WAVE1 reconstructed plasmid and specifically siRNA to WAVE1 respectively, and the expression of WAVE1, MRP1 and BCRP before and after transfection was assessed by real-time PCR and Western blot analysis.

RESULTS(1) The expression levels of WAVE1, P-gp, MRP, LRP and BCRP in refractory/relapsing group were much higher than that in complete continuous remission (CCR) group. (2) WAVE1 mRNA and protein expression in BMMCs of children were at higher levels when they were newly diagnosed or relapsed, compared with complete continuous remission. (3) The WAVE1 expression at mRNA and protein level in HL60/ADR cells was increased by about 353% and 95% respectively as compared with that in HL60 cells. (4) Overexpression of WAVE1 in HL60 cell lines upregulated the expression levels of MRP and BCRP (MRP mRNA and protein level were increased by about 16.54 times and 129% respectively, BCRP was increased by 4.93 times and 96%); whereas suppression of WAVE1 expression by RNA interference downregulated the expression levels of MRP1 and BCRP (MRP mRNA and protein level was only 11% and 43% of pre-disturbance respectively, BCRP was 14% and 71%).

CONCLUSIONSHigher levels of WAVE1 in the BM indicate an unfavorable prognosis in children with AML. WAVE1 is related to the development of AML and involved in the MDR mechanisms, and regulates the level of MRP1 and BCRP.

AIMTo investigate the pathological features of the prostate biopsy through mass screening for prostate cancer in a Chinese cohort and their association with serum prostate specific antigen (PSA).

METHODSA total of 12027 Chinese men in Changchun were screened for prostate cancer by means of the serum total prostate specific antigen tPSA test (by Elisa assay). Transrectal ultrasound-guided systematic six-sextant biopsies were performed on those whose serum tPSA value was > 4.0 ng/mL and those who had obstructive symptoms (despite their tPSA value) and were subject to subsequent pathological analysis with the aid of the statistic software SPSS 10.0 (SPSS. Inc., Chicago. USA).

RESULTSOf the 12027 cases, 158 (including 137 patients whose serum tPSA values were 4.0 ng/mL and 21 patients [serum tPSA < 4.0 ng/mL] who had obstructive symptoms) undertook prostate biopsy. Of the 158 biopsies, 41 cases of prostatic carcinoma were found (25.9 %, 41/158). The moderately differentiated carcinoma and poorly differentiated carcinoma accounted for 61% and 34%, respectively. A significant linear positive correlation between the serum tPSA and the Gleason scores in the 41 cases of prostatic carcinoma (r = 0.312, P < 0.01) was established. A significant linear positive correlation between the serum tPSA value of the 41 prostatic carcinoma and the positive counts of carcinoma in sextant biopsies was established (r = 0.406, P < 0.01), indicating a significant linear relationship between serum tPSA and the size of tumor.

CONCLUSIONThis study was the first to conduct mass screening for prostate cancer by testing for serum tPSA values and the first to investigate the pathological features of prostate cancer in a cohort of Chinese men. Our results reveal that the moderately differentiated carcinoma is the most common type of prostate cancer. This study also has shown that the serum tPSA value in prostate cancer is associated with the Gleason score and the size of tumor.
