2.Primary human airway epithelial cell cultures: an update on technique and application in virology

Well-differentiated primary human airway epithelial cell culture (HAE), an organotypic human airway culture system, has been increasingly used as a linkage between researches conducted on animal models and humans.In this review, we focus on progress in technological development and its application in virology.The following aspects are covered in this review: (1)Structure and function of the normal airway, (2)Role of respiratory epithelial cells in pulmonary innate immunity, (3)Development of primary human airway epithelial cell cultures, (4)Application of primary human airway epithelial cell cultures in virology.
3.Diagnostic value of 3D reconstruction with spiral CT in upper cervical spinal fractures

Objective To study the image features and clinical significance of 3-dimensional (3-D)and multiplanar reconstruction with spiral CT(SCT) in cervical spinal fractures.MethodPlain film radiography and spiral CT scanning were taken for 26 cases of cervical spinal fractures.The type of fractures, diagnositic successful rate, parameter of scanning and late stage managing methods were investigated retrospectively to find out the effective difference between the diagnosis of plain X-ray and SCT. The imagin location of fractures,sequence of cenrum, heighth of centrum, fracture line, auxillary structure and rotation/dislocation of the fractures were emphasized to evaluate the advantages of 3-D imaging.ResultIn the 26 cases, there were 4 Jefferson fractures, (in which 1 combined with articular dislocations), 17 C2 spinous process fractures, (in which 1 had failure of plain X-ray diagnostic), 1 Hangman fracture, 2 C1~2 imbalance, (in which 1 had failure of plain X-ray diagnostic).There were 2 cases of axoid longitudinal fractures without obvious dislocation. The diagnositic successful rate were 100% in SCT group, while 65% in X-ray group in which 6 cases had diagnostic failure and 3 cases had fracture mis-diagnozing as dislocation.The anatomical structure of upper cervical spine was complicated and was significantly different from other cervical spine constructions. Spiral CT could reveal high resolution images of the upper cervical spine, morphosis of vertibral canal, dislocation information of fracture mass and its relation with neighbouring tissues. Especially in C1 burst fracture,C2 dens fracture and C1~2 dislocation, SCT could provide clear 3-D information of the size of collateral mass and the dislocation degree, furthermore, images could be rotated freely to observe the fracture in any proper section. That provides important information for the decision of operation, selection of operation types and evaluation of operation dager.ConclusionThe spiral CT scan and 3D reconstruction can reveal fracture better.The advantages of SCT are suggested that this diagnostic modality may be the standard method for the initial evaluation of the upper cervical spine injury.

6.Assessment of microcirculation in a hind limb ischemia model

Aim To establish the standards for evaluation of microcirculation in a rat hind limb ischemia model.Methods Rats were subjected to unilateral femoral artery ligation.After 4 weeks,the regional blood flow in skeletal muscles was measured by fluorescent microsphere assay.Formation of collateral vessels was determined by microangiography.Capillary density was examined by immunostaining for CD34.Results In ischemic limbs,regional blood flow decreased significantly,some collateral vessels formed with typical "corkscrew" appearance,and histological analysis showed lower capillary density.Conclusion Quantitative assessment of microcirculation in a hind limb ischemia model is established.
7.Muscle strength test of acetabular fracture patients following Kocher-Langenbeck posterior approach surgery:Peri-hip power analysis in 36 cases

Thirty-six patients with acetabular fracture undergoing Kocher-Langenbeck approach surgery in Beijing Jishuitan Hospital between January 2001 and December 2005 were selected.All patients underwent tibial tubercle or femoral upper condyle traction before surgery.People with traumatic arthritis or other lower limb injury on postoperative X-ray were excluded.Using Biodex system to test the abduction and extension muscle at 60( ?)/s and 180( ?)/s.Peak torque,total work,and mean power were used for evaluation.The difference between bilateral limbs ≤ 10% was normal,≥ 20% was abnormal and 11%-19% was suspected.The muscle strength in fast test was more than the slow test(t=2.21,P
8.Comparison of occupational exposure limits of hexavalent chromium compounds in China and foreign workplaces

Objective To compare and analyze the occupational exposure limit(OEL)of hexavalent chromium compounds in
China and foreign countries. Methods The OEL and background information of hexavalent chromium compounds released by
nine official and unofficial organizations in seven countries/regions were collected and sorted. The classification,limit levels,
formulation principles and compound characteristics labeling of OEL were compared. Results The OEL values published by
nine organizations ranged from 0.000 02 to 0.050 00 mg/m3
. Among them,the limits of seven organizations(including China)
did not clearly distinguish the soluble types of hexavalent chromium compounds;the limits of eight organizations(including
China)were calculated in terms of chromium;seven organizations(including China)have only developed OEL for long-term
exposure. The OEL of hexavalent chromium in China was 0.050 00 mg/m3 which is relatively loose. Its carcinogenicity label was
consistent with international standards,its sensitization label was consistent with some countries,and its percutaneous
absorption label had not been included in the characteristic labeling of limit values. Conclusion It is suggested that the OEL of
hexavalent chromium in China should be revised timely,and the systemic adverse effects caused by percutaneous absorption of
hexavalent chromium compounds should be focused on. At the same time,it is recommended to systematically adjust the
management concepts and principles of all carcinogens.
9.Advances in the detection and clinical application of peripheral circulating tumor cells of hepatocellular carcinoma

Circulating tumor cells are found in patients’ peripheral blood circulation, which are the key to tumor metastasis and recurrence. We can achieve early diagnosis and treatment of the tumor if we could detect circulating tumor cells through peripheral blood vessels. It is of great significance to improve the prognosis of hepatocellular carcinoma patients by studying the relationships between hepatocellular carcinoma and peripheral circulating tumor cells. Hence, this paper reviews the recent progress in the detection and clinical application of circulating tumor cells in hepatocellular carcinoma in order to provide references for clinical and related studies.
