OBJECTIVE To investigate the effect of furanodiene(FDE),a diterpene derived from the medicinal plant Zedoary,on apoptosis of human gastric cancer MGC-803 cells induced in vitro. METHODS MGC-803 cells were treated with FDE 46.29~740.74μmol·L-1 for 24,48 and 72 h,and the cell viability was detected with MTT assay. Cell morphology was observed by light microscopy and Hoechst33342 staining. Flow cytometry was used to detect cell apoptotic rate and cell cycle. Rh123 staining and fluorescence probe DCFH-DA were employed to detect the changes in mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP) and reactive oxygen species(ROS). RESULTS MTT Results showed that FDE 46.29-740.74μmol · L-1 exhibited significantly higher cytotoxicity to gastric cancer MGC-803 cells. IC50 for MGC-803 of 24,48 and 72 h treatment was 347.91,257.41 and 101.01μmol·L-1,respectively. Treatment with FDE 92.58-370.32μmol·L-1 for 24 h also caused significant morphological changes in MGC-803 cells. AnnexinⅤ-FITC/PI double staining showed that the apoptotic rate increased after FDE 92.58-370.32μmol·L-1 treatment for 24 h(P<0.05). FDE enabled MGC-803 cell cycle arrest in S phase. DCFH-DA staining showed that FDE resulted in an increase in intracellular ROS levels(P<0.05) when PDE concentration was 370.37μmol·L-1(P<0.05). MMP decreased after FDE treatment when PDE concen?tration was 370.37μmol·L-1(P<0.05). CONCLUSION FDE Possesses potent tumor selected toxicity and can induce apoptosis of MGC-803 cells through cell cycle arresting, which is related to inhibition of DNA biosynthesis.

Objective To establish a rabbit model of lumbar laminectomy and bone grains replantation and provide experimental evidence for the clinical application. Methods Eighteen healthy male New Zealand rabbits were selected and randomly divided into two groups:the control group (n=6) and experimental group (n=12).The rabbits of control group were given general anesthesia, and taking the L5 spinous process as the center to perfom left L5 laminectomy, using a micro lancet forceps to slowly bite the lamina and ligamentum flavum for fenestration and exposed to an approximately 0.8 cm x 0.3 cm sized bone window and then sutured the skin. The rabbits of experimental group were exposed to an approximately 0.8 x 0.3 cm sized bone window as well, and bone fragments were cut into small grains. Then the small bone grains were embedded in medical collagen sponge, to form an arch shape, and replanted them to the site of epidural fenestration.CT scan and histological changes were observed at 4, 8 and 12 weeks after operation. Results At 8 weeks after operation, CT examination showed that in the experimental group, a thin bone plate was formed by the bone grains. At 12 weeks after operation, the bone plate became thicker and was connected with the vertebral bone, and with continuous bone trabeculae. The spinal canal and volume were not obviously changed, and no spinal cord compression was observed. The rabbits of control group showed segment lamina defects, a small scar protruding into the spinal canal, and the vertebral canal was not completely reconstructed. Conclusions The bone grains replantation can effectively promote bone reconstruction in the laminectomized rabbits, and the formed bone plate can prevent epidural scar from intruding into the spinal canal, and can reduce the postlaminectomy adhesion.

In this paper, an analysis was made on the varieties and standards of labiatae medicinal plants used in Tibetan medicine. The results showed 71 species of labiatae plants in 21 genera (including varieties) recorded in relevant literatures, involving 44 varieties of medicinal materials. Specifically, seven species (9.9%) were intersected with traditional Chinese medicines (TCM), 19 varieties (43%) were recorded in Chinese medicinal material standards at all levels, and 27 species (38%) were source plants. In Tibetan medicine standards and literatures, there are great differences between Tibetan names and translated Chinese names and among varieties of source plants. Apart from a few of varieties intersected with traditional Chinese medicines had complete standards and regulations in Chinese Pharmacopoeia, most of species only had characters, microscopic, physical and chemical identifications in Standards Issued by Ministry of Health-Tibetan Medicine, Tibetan Medicine Standard and local standards. Therefore, the Tibetan medicinal material variety-source specification and quality standard system shall be promoted on the basis of literatures research, investigations for resources and current applications and modern pharmaceutical studies.

Objective To explore the clinical features, diagnosi s and prognosis of incontinentia pigmenti. Methods Analyzing and summarizing the clinical characteristic, diagnosis and prognosis of neonatal incontinentia pigmenti in 6 neonatal infants that were hospita- lized in our department during the period from January 1 998 to December 2003 were studied, and some relevant literature were reviewed. Results 1.Three of 6 infants were male which was unusual;2.Four infants had typical skin lesions at birth and 1 case at 6 days old.Four cases had typical 3 stages o f skin lesions including the erythematous and vesicular inflammatory stage, verr ucous lesions and hyperkeratosis stage, macular hyperpigmentation stage, but the re was overlap;3.Four infants were complicated by central nervous system involv ement (two cases presented mental retardation,2 infants were temporary damage). Two cases were complicated by ocular manifestations ( one case had optical nerve atrophy and blind in left eye,the other had severe bilateral retinal lesions); 4.On specific examination 5 infants were diagnosed by skin biopsy.Gene analysis was made in 1 case, but we didn′t find the mutations of NEMO. Conclusions Incontinentia pigmenti is a rare X-linked dominant multisystem disease. It may be misdiagnosed in the initial stages.Except typical clinical features, skin biops y and gene analysis are main evidence for diagnosis.Early detection and interven tion are important for prognosis. Objective To improve the recognition of intramedullary spinal abscess by a case of congenital dermal sinus with intramedullary spinal abscess and reduco the incidence of congenital dermal sinus with intramedullary spinal abscess. Methods Clinical, laboratory data and image of a confirmed case about one infant of congenital dermal sinus with multiple intramedullary spinal abscess were investigated, the related literature was reviewed. Results In this case, when the infant with congential dermal sinus had infection,he failed to gain antibiotic therapy, timely surgical treatment, his infection had diffused, and multiple intramedullary spinal abscess flared up.Conclusions Intramedullary spinal abscess is a rare disease. If treatment is delayed, the prognosis is poor and the mortality rate is high.MRI is the ideal investigation for diagnosis.Intramedullary spinal abscess can happen subsequent to congenital dermal sinus with infection, and cause neurological sequela. So an infant with congenital dermal sinus should be offered to avoid complication caused by infection.

ObjectiveTo explore effect of interleukin-10 (IL-10) on histopathologic scores of severe acute pancreatitis (SAP) and the level of serum amylase (AMY) in rats.Methods48 female and male adult Sprague Dawley rats (200—300g) were randomly allocated into three groups: OPgroup, SAP group and IL-10 group with 16 rats in each group. SAP was made with retrograde ductal infusion of 5% sodium taurocholate solution.ResultsIn SAP and IL-10 group, there were interstitial edema, necrosis, neutrophil infiltration and interstitial hemorrhage of pancreas, more or less. At 6h and 12h after models were made, the pancreatic histopathologic score in IL-10 group (4.00±0.33 and 6.25±0.25) were significantly lower than that in SAP group (6.13±0.35 and 9.50±0.50)(P<0.01). At 6 h after models were made, the serum AMY in IL-10 group was lower than that in SAP group (P<0.05), but at 12 h there were no differences.ConclusionIn earlier period of SAP in rats, IL-10 can lower the serum AMY level, and significantly reduced pancreatic histologic score (edema, inflammation, hemorrhage, and necrosis).
