Objective To evaluate the effects of a health education project on endemic fluorosis in Shandong Province, and to provide a basis for formulating control strategies. Methods From December 2010 to June 2011,according to historical conditions,a total of 19 counties (cities, districts) of Shandong Province were chosen, and 3 townships (towns) were chosen in each project county.Health educational activities on endemic fluorosis were carried out in the Central Primary School in grade 4 to 6 in each township(town). In each project township(town),3 villages were chosen in each selected township(town) where the health educational activities in the community were carried out. Before and after the health educational activities, surveys on knowledge questionnaire on drinking-water-borne fluorosis control were conducted among 30 students of grade 5 in the Central Primary School and 15 housewives in every school location in each selected township(town). Results After the health educational activities, the knowledge awareness rates of endemic fluorosis control of the students and housewives were 96.53% (5482/5679) and 94.88% (3501/3690),respectively,and increased significantly compared with those before intervention [62.31% (5154/8271) and 76.91% (2815/3660)],and the difference was statistically significant (x2 =2176.50,490.58,all P < 0.01).Among the primary school students and housewives, the knowledge awareness rates of endemic fluorosis control were increased by 34.22% and 17.97%,respectively.Conclusions Health education activities on endemic fluorosis can significantly improve the knowledge awareness of target population, which will play a positive role in promoting prevention and control of endemic fluorosis.

AIM:To evaluate the feasibility and advantages of two-port 27-gauge pars plana vitrectomy for treatment of recurrent retinal detachment in silicone oil dwelling eyes.METHODS:A retrospective study.Two-port 27-gauge pars plana vitrectomy was performed in 7 eyes with recurrent retinal detachment without remove of silicone oil.Proliferative membrane peeling, endolaser treatment, and drainage of subretinal fluid were performed.Scleral bulking was performed if necessary.RESULTS:Sucessful retina re-attachment was accomplishied in all eyes.No visually significant intraoperative complication occurred. All eyes expericend quick recoveray of visual acuity and mild postoperative irritation. One eye developed a recurrent inferior retinal detchment in 20d after the surgery using non-remove technique, and recovered after conventional silicone oil removal and retinal reattachment surgery.CONCLUSION:Two-port 27-gauge pars plana vitrectomy is an efficacious (and potentially cost-efficient) method to treat early stage recurrent retinal detachment in silicone oil dwelling eyes.

An analysis method has been established to test 27 elements (Li, Be, B, Mg, Al, Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Ga, As, Sr, Mo, Cd, Sn, Sb, Ba, La, Hg, Pb, Bi) in Maca nationality's medicine with microwave digestion-ICP-MS. Sample solutions were analyzed by ICP-MS after microwave digestion, and the contents of elements were calculated according to their calibration curves, and internal standard method was adopted to reduce matrix effect and other interference effects. The experimental results showed that the linear relations of all the elements were very good; the correlation coefficient (r) was 0.9994-1.0000 (Hg was 0.9982) ; the limits of detection were 0.003-2.662 microg x L(-1); the relative standard deviations for all elements of reproducibility were lower than 5% (except the individual elements); the recovery rate were 78.5%-123.7% with RSD lower than 5% ( except the individual elements). The analytical results of standard material showed acceptable agreement with the certified values. This method was applicable to determinate the contents of multi-elements in Maca which had a high sensitivity, good specificity and good repeatability, and provide basis for the quality control of Maca.

Objective To study the effects of experiment-related factors on hematological parameters in SD rats, analyze the data difference and causes, understand the effects of anesthetics and stress responses on the physiological aspects of animals, and to provide a reference for the standardization of animal welfare and compound toxicity testing methods. Methods According to gender (A), fasting time (B), anesthesia (C) and blood collection mode (D), SPF SD rats were divided into 24 groups.Blood samples were collected from each group. Then, red blood cell count, hemoglobin levels, white blood cell count and classification indicators were measured. Results The primary and secondary order of the factors affecting the white blood cell count was D > C > A > B, and the levels of white blood cell count of each factor were male rats > female rats, and venous blood > arterial blood, chloral hydrate > pentobarbital sodium > no anesthesia. The primary and secondary order of the factors affecting the white blood cell classification was C > D=A=B, and factors affecting the levels of white blood cell classification were chloral hydrate > pentobarbital sodium > no anesthesia. The primary and secondary order of the effects of the factors on the red blood cell count and hemoglobin level was C > D=A=B, and the levels of red blood cell count and hemoglobin level were pentobarbital sodium > chloral hydrate> no anesthesia. There was no significant difference in the blood indexes between the different fasting time groups. Conclusions There is no effect of fasting on hematological parameters, but there are differences in the blood parameters between arteries and veins. The effect of chloral hydrate anesthesia on the count and classification of white blood cells is greater than that of pentobarbital sodium. The effect of chloral hydrate anesthesia on the red blood cell count and hemoglobin level is greater than that of pentobarbital sodium. The two kinds of anesthesia methods have their own advantages and disadvantages.

BACKGROUND:Surgical treatment for pigmented vil onodular synovitis can maximize the excision of synovial lesions and recovery of joint function.
OBJECTIVE:To investigate the knee joint function and relapse rate fol owing treatment of pigmented vil onodular synovitis with total knee replacement and arthroscopic synovectomy.
METHODS:We retrospectively analyzed 34 cases of knee pigmented vil onodular synovitis admitted for surgical treatment in the Department of Orthopedics, Xiangya Hospital of Central South University, China from December 2006 to December 2011. In these cases, 24 patients received arthroscopic synovectomy and 10 patients were subjected to total knee replacement. Adjuvant radiotherapy was conducted according to postoperative patient’s conditions. Lysholm scoring was employed in the arthroscopic synovectomy group, and American Knee Society scoring was used in the total knee replacement group. Knee function in two groups was compared before and after treatment. Fol ow-up observation was performed to compare knee function recovery and relapse rate between two groups.
RESULTS AND CONCLUSION:Thirty-four patients were effectively fol owed up for 12-66 months, mean 41.3 months. Statistical analysis showed that in the arthroscopic synovectomy group, the postoperative Lysholm score was (86.3± 10.3) points, significantly higher than the preoperative score which was (55.5±13.2) points (t=3.81, P=0.016, P<0.05). In the total knee arthroplasty group, the American Knee Society score was increased from (40.7±2.2) points preoperatively to (90.2±1.1) points postoperatively (t=6.27, P<0.01). In the arthroscopic synovectomy group, the American Knee Society score was increased from (34.2±3.9) points preoperatively to (80.8±1.9) points postoperatively (t=16.58, P<0.01). Arthroscopic synovectomy combined with adjuvant radiotherapy can achieve better outcomes in pigmented vil onodular synovitis patients, while the total knee replacement for advanced with advanced knee diffuse pigmented vil onodular synovitis is better to restore knee function and the recurrence rate is low.
