2.A STUDY ON THE BIOAVAILABILITY OF HEME IRON IN RAT
Acta Nutrimenta Sinica 1956;0(02):-
In the present work, the bioavailability of heme iron has been studied by means of the hemoglobin regeneration method with iron-deficient rats model, which was conducted by feeding a low iron basal diet. Anemic rats were then divided into groups to which basal diets with various iron levels (7, 14, 28 ppm Fe) from heme iron (Group 1,2,3) and ferrous sulfate (Group 4, 5, 6, as a reference standard) were subsequently fed respectively. After 5-week regeneration period, the regenerated hemoglobin levels of the rats of corresponding groups were (1) 9.56→12.25, (2) 9.71→12.02, (3)9.51→ 11.09, (4) 9.74→10.81, (5) 9.66→11.24, and (6) 9.67→12.05, thereby the percentage of relative bioavailability (RBA) of heme iron were 117.7%, 124.8%, and 94.9% respectively. This result showed that the lower level of heme iron has a higher RBA. The reason why the effect of high level of heme iron was relatively lower was not fully understood.

6. Expression of matrix metalloproteinase-9 in human abdominal aortic aneurysmal tissues
Academic Journal of Xi'an Jiaotong University 2006;18(1):94-96
Objective: To study the effects of MMP-9 (Matrix Metalloproteinase-9, MMP-9) in the pathogenesis of abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs) by localizing the expression of MMP-9 in the aneurysmal tissues. Methods: By means of immonohistochemistry, the frozen sections (5 μm) with aneurysmal tissues (n = 10) were incubated with MMP-9 antibody-added agents, then the sections were stained and observed under the microscope to localize the expression of MMP-9, which displayed a brown precipitate within the arterial walls. The normal arterial wall tissues (n = 10) and the diseased arterial wall tissues from the arterial occlusive diseases (AODs) (n = 15) were also immunized exactly the same way as control. Results: A quantity of positive granules which appeared within the aortic media showed the strong expression of MMP-9 in the AAAs, with the positive rate reaching 95%(19/20), while no expression of MMP-9 was observed in the normal artery. However, the scattered distributed positive granules were seen within the arterial wall of some cases of the AODs, implying the weak positive expression of MMP-9 in this disease with the positive rate of 26.7% (4/15). There was a significant difference of the expression of MMP-9 within the arterial wall between the AAAs and AODs(P<0.01). Conclusion: High expression of MMP-9 within the aortic media faciliatates the degradation of collagen and elastin fibres and subsequent dilation of the aortic artery , thus playing an important role in the pathogenesis of AAAs. To refrain MMP-9 from enhanced expressing within the aortic wall is of clinical significance in the prevention and treatment of AAAs.

Aim Subcortical ischemic vascular demen-tia ( SIVD ) induced by chronic hypoperfusion due to small-artery disease is a common cause of vascular de-mentia ( VaD) , which is recognized as the second most prevalent type of dementia. The aim of this study was to determine whether carnosine played a protective role in cognitive impairment induced by permanent occlu-sion of the right unilateral common carotid arteries ( rUCCAO ) in SIVD. Methods Adult male mice ( C57BL/6 strain ) were subjected to rUCCAO, and treated with carnosine or saline. Locomotor test, open field test, hot plate test, freezing test and Morris water maze were performed after rUCCAO. Results There were no differences among rUCCAO group, carnosine group and sham group for total distance traveled in lo-comotor test. In the open field test, carnosine (200, 500 mg · kg-1 ) significantly revised the decrease of latency spent in the center induced by SIVD . There were no differences between rUCCAO and sham groups for the pain threshold. In freezing test, rUCCAO in-duced a significant reduction in content memory, which was completely reversed by treatment of carnosine. In Morris water maze training trials, rUCCAO-treated mice showed prolonged escape latency in acquisition phase, carnosine ( 200, 500 mg · kg-1 ) markedly shortened the escape latency. Conclusion These data suggest that carnosine has a neuroprotective effect on cognitive impairment induced by rUCCAO in mice.

Objective To summarize the clinical experience of living relative donor kidney transplantation. Methods A retrospective analysis on 19 cases of living relative donor kidney transplantation from February 2002 to May 2006 was carried out. Results No blood transfusion was needed and no serious postoperative complications occurred in donors. The 19 donors were discharged from hospital at 7~10 days postoperatively.Follow-up examinations for 1~51 months(mean,28 months)in the 19 donors revealed normal liver and renal functions.Among the 19 recipients,follow-up examinations for 1~51 months(mean,28 months)showed that the renal functions recovered in 3~5 postoperative days in 16 recipients and within 3 weeks after transplantation in 3.Acute rejection occurred in 2 recipients postoperatively, and was reversed by steroid pulse therapy in 1 recipient and by ALG treatment for 10 days in 1 recipient,in whom the hormone pulse therapy was invalid. The hormone treatment was needed for only 3 weeks in a renal transplantation between monozygotic twins, without using other immunosuppressors, and no acute rejection occurred. Two patients with an uneventful recovery developed an acute rejection because of voluntary decrement and even stopping of immunosuppressor after 6 months, and then was treated with hormone pulse treatment until a reversion. The 1-year survival rate for patient/kidney was 100%.Conclusions Living relative donor renal transplantation is safe and feasible, offering a high survival rate for patient/kidney.
