This study is to investigate the inhibitory effect of lidamycin (LDM) and its combination with methotrexate (MTX) on lung metastasis of fibrosarcoma by bioluminescence imaging in athymic mice. A stable luciferase transfected HT-1080 cell line was constructed and the capability to establish experimental lung metastasis in athymic mice was confirmed. The optical imaging system was applied to evaluate the formation of lung metastasis in vivo. In addition, metastatic nodules were counted for the evaluation of inhibition rates. As shown, the fluorescent intensity of luciferase-transfected HT-1080 cells was colinear with the cell population and the minimal detected cell population was 100 cells/well. Optical imaging showed that the fluorescent intensity of treated group was apparently lower than that of the control. The inhibition rates of lung metastasis by LDM alone at 0.025 mg x kg(-1) and 0.05 mg x kg(-1) were 53.9% and 75.9%, respectively, while that of MTX alone at 0.5 mg x kg(-1) was 70.2%. The combination of LDM at 0.025 mg x kg(-1) and MTX at 0.5 mg x kg(-1) showed an inhibition rate of 88.7%. The coefficient of drug interaction (CDI) was 0.82. The results herein demonstrated that LDM alone had strong anti-metastasis effect on human fibrosarcoma HT-1080 and the inhibition efficacy is strengthened when combined with MTX.

ObjectiveTo observe the effects of acupuncture combined with massage on shoulder subluxation and motor function recovery of the upper extremities in patients with hemiplegia after stroke.Methods60 hemiplegic patients were randomly divided into two groups for treatment with acupuncture cooperates with massage or usual rehabilition, respectively. The recovery of the patient's shoulder subluxation and movement function of upper extremities were evaluated 2 months after treatment. ResultsThe shoulder subluxation and movement function of the upper extremities were improved after treatment with both therapies (P<0.01), and acupuncture cooperates with massage showed better effect (P<0.01). ConclusionAcupuncture cooperates with massage can facilitate the recovery of shoulder subluxation and motor function of the upper extremities after hemiplegia.

Molecular biologic research on erectile dysfunction (ED), especially the elucidation of NO-cGMP signaling pathway which plays an important role on modulating corpus cavernosum smooth muscle dilation, has been made the great advance in past ten years. The further research on the penile erection related genes including nitric oxide synthase (NOS), phosphodiesterases (PDEs), K+ channal, insulin-like growth factor (IGF), heme oxygenase (HO), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), cyclic GMP-dependent kinase (cGK I), angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) and growth factor (GF) etc, has given the theoretical evidence for the clinical treatment of ED in future.

Currently there are more than 10 types of penile prosthesis available today, ranging from the very simple to the very sophisticated. We review our experience with various penile prosthesis, with particular regard to the complication rate. From December. 1983 to July. 1993, we have implanted 295 penile prosthesis of eight different types. The average age of patients was 44 years. Every patient was evaluated with various multidisciplinary diagnostic approaches.The etiologies of impotence were vasculogenic 29%, diabetogenic 22%, spinal cord injury 16%, pelvic bone injury 11%, etc. The types of implanted prosthesis were AMS malleable 143, Jonas 42, Dynaflex 36, Hydroflex 8, Uni-Flate 1000 2, AMS 700 CXM 58, Ultrex 3, Mentor alpha-1 3 and the mean follow-up period was 34 months. The diameters of implanted prosthesis were from 9. 5mm to l3mm, mostly 9.5mm(52.9%) range. The length of implanted prosthesis were from 10cm to 20cm, mostly 16-l8cm( 68.8%). Cases with uneven diameters or lengths were 20(6.8 %). The intraoperative complications were 1 corporeal rupture and 1 bladder rupture, and the postoperative complications were 2 prosthesis infections, 2 mechanical failures, and 1 prosthesis infection with mechanical failure. In 4 patients reimplantations were successful. More than 99% ( 290/291) patients still have functioning prosthesis. Every prosthesis has their advantages and also disadvantages. Factors to be analysed in the selection of proper prosthesis should include patients economic status, education, personality, social activity, hand dexterity, and penile size. So far by our 10 years experience, we believe that 3-piece inflatable prosthesis especially AMS 700 CXM, which is designed to fit the orienta1 penile size, is excellent in quality and reliability.

Transplanted stem cells (SCs), owing to their regenerative capacity, represent one of the most promising methods to restore erectile dysfunction (ED). However, insufficient source, invasive procedures, ethical and regulatory issues hamper their use in clinical applications. The endogenous SCs/progenitor cells resident in organ and tissues play critical roles for organogenesis during development and for tissue homeostasis in adulthood. Even without any therapeutic intervention, human body has a robust self-healing capability to repair the damaged tissues or organs. Therefore, SCs-for-ED therapy should not be limited to a supply-side approach. The resident endogenous SCs existing in patients could also be a potential target for ED therapy. The aim of this review was to summarize contemporary evidence regarding: (1) SC niche and SC biological features in vitro; (2) localization and mobilization of endogenous SCs; (3) existing evidence of penile endogenous SCs and their possible mode of mobilization. We performed a search on PubMed for articles related to these aspects in a wide range of basic studies. Together, numerous evidences hold the promise that endogenous SCs would be a novel therapeutic approach for the therapy of ED.

OBJECTIVETo observe the pathological changes in ovary or testis of the SD rats after n-hexane inhalation, and to investigate the effects of n-hexane to sexual glands.

METHODSForty-eight adult healthy rats were selected and randomizedly divided into four groups control group and three n-hexane groups (1, 3 and 7 d) six rats for each group. After inhalation, SD rats were killed and n-hexane concentration of blood from celiac artery were detected. Super-oxide dismutase (SOD) glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) malondialdehyde (MDA) glutathione (GSH) were measured by photometry, and organ coefficients were calculated. The ovary or testis were embedded with paraffin, sliced, stained by HE method and observed using microscope.

RESULTSAs the time of n-Hexane effect increased, the activities of SOD, GSH-Px and GSH were decreased, but the content of MDA was increased, especially in the 7 d group (P < 0.01).

CONCLUSIONSn-hexane can induce a series of damages in ovary or testis of SD rats, and lipid-pre-oxidation may be one of the effect process.

OBJECTIVETo investigate how network education can improve college students' knowledge on sexual and reproductive health in Ningbo city.

METHODSFrom December 2012 to June 2013, we conducted a questionnaire investigation among college students in Ningbo city about the effects of network education on their knowledge about sexual psychology, sexual physiology, sexual ethics, and reproductive health.

RESULTSA total of 7 362 college students accomplished the investigation, of whom 2 483 (42.1% males and 57.9% females) received network education, while the other 4 879 (24.1% males and 75.9% females) did not. Approximately 47.1% of the male and 28.0% of the female students acquired sexual and reproductive knowledge via network education. Reproductive health-related network education significantly enriched the students' knowledge about the reproductive system and sex, pubertal development, sexual physiology, conception and embryonic development, methods of contraception, sexual psychology, sexually transmitted diseases and their prevention, pregnancy care and eugenics, and environment- and occupation-related reproductive health (P < 0.01). It also remarkably improved their cognitive attitude towards reproductive health knowledge (P < 0.01). Those who received reproductive health-related network education showed a significantly higher rate of masturbation (P < 0.01) but markedly later time of the first masturbation (P < 0.01) than those who did not.

CONCLUSIONNetwork education can enhance the effect of reproductive health education among college students and improve their sexual experience and health.
