Journal of Acupuncture and Tuina Science 2009;7(4):207-209
Objective: To observe the clinical efficacy of tuina in treating depression.Method: Eighty depression cases that conformed to the inclusive criteria were randomized into tuina and Deanxit group, with 40 cases in each group. Tuina manipulations were adopted for cases in the tuina group, 30 min for each treatment. While 2 Deanxit tablets were adopted for cases in the Deanxit group, twice a day. The clinical efficacy of the two groups was evaluated by using Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression (HAMD) before treatment and the 2nd, 4th and 6thweeks after. In addition, the Treatment Emergent Symptom Scale (TESS) was adopted to evaluate the adverse reactions in the two groups. Result: Both tuina and Deanxit can help to relieve the symptoms of depression patients. The effective rate of tuina and Deanxit were 72.5% and 70.0% respectively. However, there were no adverse reactions in tuina group, while 12.5% of adverse reaction rate occurred in the Deanxit group. Conclusion: Tuina can definitely benefit patients with depression and cause no adverse reactions.

Objective To evaluate the anatomical and functional results of retinotomy in treatment of complicated retinal detachment. Methods Twenty three eyes were treated with retinectomy during vitrectomy for complicated retinal detachment with proliferative vitreoretinopathy when complete reattachment of retina was not obtained despite careful mambrane peeling. After released the peripheral vitreoretinal contraction or pulled subretinal membranes, perfluorocarbon liquid injection, laser retinopexy and silicone oil tamponade were performed. Retinotomy size ranged from 30 degree to 360 degree (average 132 degree). Results Retinal attachment were obtained in all of the operated eyes at the end of the operation. Silicone oil was removed from 15 eyes (65.0%) within 3~11 months postoperatively. After a minimum follow up of 6 months, the retinae were completely attached in 17 eyes ( silicone oil was not removed in 4 eyes ) and visual acuity of 0.02 or better was obtained in 11 eye (48.0%). Recurrent retinal detachment occurred in 2 eyes in which the silicone oil had been removed. The major complications were recurrence of the proliferation in 6 eyes (26.0%) and hypotony in 3 eyes (13.0%). Conclusion Retinotomy is beneficial to reattach the retina for eyes with advanced proliferative vitreoretinopathy in seemingly inoperable cases.

Objective To determine whether pupil response to dilute tropicamide could be used as a diagnostic test for Alzheimer's disease (AD). Methods Pupil diameters of both eyes were measured simultaneously by an infra red automatic pupil diameter recorder and analyzer every 0 1 second for 30 minutes after instillation of 0 01% tropicamide to one eye and normal saline to the other. Three groups of patients were studied: 52 patients with AD, 33 with vascular dementia (VD), and 58 elderly controls. The percent change in pupil diameter of the treated eye was examined automatically by the analyzer. After finding the cut off point for differential diagnosis by receiver operator characteristic curve (ROC), its sensitivity, specificity and Kappa coefficient were calculated. Results Mean percent change in diameters of the treated eye showed a trend of fastest maximum dilation in AD group, and was significantly different from other groups at all the measurement time points after 10th minute instillation. The difference was most significant at the 18th minute after instillation, and 15% was used as a cut off point, the sensitivity was 0 81,specificity 0 79 0 82, and Kappa coefficient 0 62 0 67. Conclusions Pupil dilation test could be used as a screening method in the diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease, or as a tool for differential diagnosis between AD and VD.
