4.The effects of hyperbaric oxygenation therapy on serum cytokines and depression in post-stroke depression
Chinese Journal of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation 2009;31(10):667-670
Objective To investigate the effects of hyperbaric oxygenation(HBO)therapy on serum cytokines and depression in post-stroke depression(PSD)and to study it's clinical implications. Methods Sixty patients with PSD were divided into two groups.Patients in routine treatment group(RT group)were treated with routine clinical treatment, whereas those in HBO group were treated with HBO therapy in addition to routine clinical treatment. The serum cytokines of tumor necrosis factor-α(TNF-α)and interleukin-1β(IL-1β)were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay(ELISA)before and after 30 days of treatment. All the patients were evaluated with Hamilton depression scale(HAMD),Chinese stroke scale(CSS)and Barthel index(BI).The evaluations were carried out at the 0 and 30 d.Results Before treatment, the concentrations of TNF-α and IL-1β in patients with PSD were significantly higher than those in patients with cerebral infarction without depression(P<0.01),and the serum levels of TNF-α and IL-1β in those with serious depression were higher than those with moderate and mild depression(P<0.01),and that in moderate depression patients were higher than that in mild depression patients{P<0.01).At the 30th d post-treatment,those parameters all decreased significantly in RT group and HBO group(P<0.01,P<0.05).Moreover,those parameters were lower in HBO group than those in RT group(P<0.01),and HAMD,CSS and BI scores in HBO group were significantly better than that in RT group(P<0.05,P<0.01).Conclusions Serum cytokines levels increased significantly in patients with PSD and were associated with the severity of depression.Serum cytokines might played an important role in pathogenesis of PSD.HBO therapy could help decrease the levels of TNF-α and IL-1β.HBO might exert therapeutic effect by reducing secondary the inflammatory injury in acute cerebral infarction.
5.Effects of electroacupuncture on disorder of intestinal motility in a rat model of irritable bowel syndrome.
Journal of Integrative Medicine 2010;8(9):883-7
Objective:To investigate the effects of electroacupuncture (EA) on intestinal motility disorder in rats with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) in order to provide experimental evidence for improving clinical treatment to IBS with EA. Methods: IBS was induced by inserting a balloon into the rectum of male Sprague-Dawley rats from their neonatal age (8th, 21st day after birth) and applying colorectal distention stimulation by inflating air into the balloon. Peristaltic wave (PW) was used to estimate intestinal motility. Rats were divided into 4 groups (n=6): normal group, untreated group, sham EA group and EA group. Acupoints of Zusanli (ST36) and Shangjuxu (ST37) in the hind limbs bilaterally were chosen for EA and sham EA treatment. Trains of dense-sparse frequencies (100 Hz and 2 Hz alternately) and intensity of 1, 2 and 3 mA (10 min for each) were applied for 30 min with each EA treatment while inserting similar needles without electrical stimulation was done as sham EA treatment. PW recorded for 30 min in normal and untreated groups respectively was taken as control values, while PW recorded after EA or sham EA treatment for 30 min was taken as responsive values. Results: Frequency of PW was significantly increased in the untreated group as compared with that in the normal group (P<0.05), and decreased after 30-min EA treatment (P<0.05). There was no significant change in the PW of sham EA group as compared with the control group and before treatment (P>0.05). Conclusion: These results suggest that 1) there is an abnormal increase in intestinal motility indicating an intestinal motility disorder in IBS rats; 2) EA but not sham EA can relieve such intestinal motility disorder.

10.Stem cell therapy for ischemic stroke
Chinese Journal of Tissue Engineering Research 2013;(45):7954-7960
BACKGROUND:Stem cells are a kind of cells characterized as species diversity, self-replication and renewal
ability, multiple differentiation potential and high proliferation potential. Then, the stem celltreatment for ischemic brain injury would be of great benefit. Stem celltherapy provides a new way for the treatment of ischemic stroke, but the mechanism is stil unclear.
OBJECTIVE:To describe the types of stem cells and review the mechanism underlying stem celltreatment for ischemic stroke.
METHODS:The first author retrieved PubMed database, Chinese Journal Ful-text Database for articles related to stem cellclassification and effectiveness, safety and mechanism of stem celltherapy for ischemic stroke
published from January 1992 to September 2012. The key words were“stem cells, brain ischemic stroke,
transplantation, treatment”in English and Chinese, respectively. A total of 168 literatures were retrieved, and 61 articles met the inclusion criteria.
RESULTS AND CONCLUSION:Stem celltherapy for ischemic stroke has shown a promising prospect though it is staged in the period of animal models. Stem celltransplantation for promoting functional recovery in the treatment of stroke has been completed in the clinical phase I or phase II trials. Stem celltransplantation for ischemic stroke appears to have no adverse reactions and to promote functional recovery. Main difficulties in stem celltransplantation for treatment of ischemic stroke include sources of stem cells, transplantation approach, stem cellsurvival in the host body, stem cellintegration with the host brain, therapeutic effectiveness and security. Based on the acquired results from the mechanism research and clinical trials, how to safely and quickly apply the stem celltherapy from the experiments to the clinic stil needs to work.
