Objective To explore the effects of balloon dilatation on esophageal motility in patients with achalasia. Methods Forty eight patients were diagnosed as having achalasia by clinical features, barium radiography, endoscopy and esophageal manometry (PC polygraf HR, Medtronic). The following parameters were evaluated: the symptom score, the maximal width of the esophagus (MWE) on barium radiography, lower esophageal sphincter pressure (LESP), lower esophageal sphincter relaxation rate (LESRR) and the contraction amplitude of esophageal body before and after dilatation at 4 weeks and 12~24 weeks. Results (1) Parameters of symptom score and the maximal esophagus width were significantly decreased ( P

Objective:To introduce our experience on treatment of melanoma metastasis to lymph nodes by percutaneous radiofrequency ablation combined with microwave coagulation therapy under contrast-enhanced ultrasound guidance and to assess the subsequent clinical efficacy. Methods: The 64 years old male patient with right sole melanoma had an enlarged right inguinal lymph node and received surgical resection twice within 9 months. During the following 2-7 months, more than 20 enlarged lymph nodes appeared along the right iliac artery and right lower limb, complicated with lower limb swelling. Surgical resection was ruled out due to the involvement of the iliac artery and the great number of the enlargements. Chemotherapy and Chinese herb medication were proven to be less effective, then a combined thermotherapy by radio frequency ablation (CelonLab-ENT, Germany) and microwave coagulation (YWY-2T, China) was employed percutaneously under the guidance of contrast-enhanced ultrasound for the treatment. The patient was followed up for 6 months. Results: Intra-and post-operation contrast-enhanced ultrasound scanning and biopsy pathology showed avascularity, necrosis, and atrophy in all the treated lymph nodes, with no obvious complications. The general condition of the patient was good and there was no new lesion found in other sites, except a few ones still receiving ablation in the right lower limb. Conclusion: Percutaneous radiofrequency ablation combined with microwave coagulation therapy under the guidance of contrast-enhanced ultrasound shows a stable killing effect for melanoma metastasis to lymph nodes in this patient, without obvious complications, and should be considered for more clinical applications.

Objective To study the effects of Yixinyin on viral myocarditis. Methods The beating myocardial cells were obtained from the ventricular myocardium of newborn Sparaque- Dawley (SD) rats and were incubated with Coxsackie B3 virus for 48 hours to establish the experimental model of viral myocarditis. With Yixinyin- contained serum added, the beating rate and survival rate of myocardial cells, and the activity of lactate dehydrogenase were measured at the 1st, 3rd and 5th day after infection. Results Serum contained Yixinyin can increase the beating rate and survival rate of the infected myocardial cells, and decrease the activity of lactate dehydrogenase significantly. Conclusion Serum contained Yixinyin has significant protective effect on myocardial cells infected with Coxsackie B3 virus in SD rats.

Viral myocarditis (VMC) is normally caused by myocarditis virus infection. Currently, the Western medicine treatment is mainly about symptomatic supportive treatment, while TCM has remarkable efficacy for this disease. This article started from the 4 common mechanisms of VMC, and elaborated the effects of individual and compound preparation, such as antiviral, regulating immune, anti free redical, antioxidation, improving myocardial metabolism, protecting myocardial cells, with a purpose to provide experimental references for TCM application in clinic.

Objective To investigate the effects of endogenous estrogen on blood glucose level, serum insulin level, and plasma total antioxidant capacity in streptozotocin-induced diabetic female mice, and to explore possible protective effects of estrogen on pancreatic islet cells. Methods Female mice were randomly according to body weight divided into four groups:( 1 ) Sham( Sham operation and vehicle administration) ; ( 2 ) Ovx( ovariectomy and vebicle administration ) ; ( 3 ) Sham + STZ ( Sham operation and STZ administration ) ; and ( 4 ) Ovx + STZ ( ovariectomy and STZ administration). The diabetic mice were induced by intraperitoneal injection of streptozotocin (STZ,50 mg/kg ).Blood glucose levels were measured once a week. Results The blood glucose level and malondialdehyde of Ovx group were higher than that in Sham group, while total anti-oxidant capacity ( T-AOC ) was lower than those in Sham group.the blood glucose level and MDA of Ovx+ STZ group were higher than those in Sham +STZ group, while T-AOC and serum insulin level were lower than those in Sham + STZ group. Conclusions Endogenous estrogen may have some protective effects on pancreatic islet function from streptozotocin-induced diabetes mellitus in female mice.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the effects of Jinlongshe Granules (JLSG) on tumor growth of gastric carcinoma. METHODS: Fifty nude mice orthotopically transplanted with MKN-45 human gastric cancer cells were divided into five groups: untreated group, 5-fluorouracil (5-FU)-treated group and high-, medium-, and low-dose JLSG-treated groups. Corresponding antitumor drugs were administered in each group except the untreated group. The antitumor effects in vivo were evaluated. Cell cycle distribution and apoptosis of MKN-45 human gastric cancer cells were determined by using flow cytometry (FCM) and Annexin V-fluorescein isothiocyanate/propidium iodide (Annexin V-FITC/PI) staining assay. The ultrastructure of MKN-45 gastric cancer cells was observed by transmission electron microscope. RESULTS: In the mice treated with high-, medium-, and low-dose JLSG, the growth inhibition rates of gastric cancer were 68.13%, 55.94% and 50.31% respectively, and this antitumor effect was dose-dependent. In the mice treated with intraperitoneal injection of 5-FU, the growth inhibition rate of gastric cancer was 53.43% and not much different from those treated with JLSG. The apoptotic rates in the high-, medium-, and low-dose JLSG-treated groups were 22.81%, 28.27% and 38.54% respectively, in a dose-dependent manner, with the cell cycle arrested at G(0)/G(1) phase. An Annexin V-FITC/PI staining assay revealed that the percentages of early apoptotic cells in the three dose JLSG-treated groups were all significantly higher than that in the 5-FU-treated group, whereas the late apoptotic and necrotic cells were much more in the 5-FU-treated group than those in the three dose JLSG-treated groups. CONCLUSION: Jinlongshe Granules exert an inhibiting effect on MKN-45 human gastric cancer cell.
