1.THE INFLUENCE OF WEANING FOOD ON THE GROWTH OF INFANTS WHILE BREAST-FEEDING
Acta Nutrimenta Sinica 1956;0(03):-
A common phenomenon of a flatten growth curve of infants at the fourth month of brest-feeding that happened in developing countries as compared with the developed areas. This is one of the problems widely concerned about. Thirty one infants were observed for six months from the fourth month after birth, They were divided into three groups and different kinds of weaning foods were provided according to the habit of mother basically using rice paste with small quantity of meat, fish, and egg yolk added, Group 2 used rice paste fortified with 2 to 3% of lysine but still some meat added, Group 3 used whole milk poweder that mixed with rice paste. Home visit was held once or twice weekly, every other week. The health status, body weight and hemoglobin of the babies, as well as the quantity of food eaten were recorded.Under a continuous counselling, the hemoglobin level of babies became normal gradually and the weight gain of babies was higher as compared with the local average growth curve significantly but this growing tendancy was affected by the episodes of illness, especially the respiratory tract infection, diarrheoa (42.3% and 34.6% of total episodes respectively) and the fevers including common cold (23.1%).The rate of body weight of the infants was still lower as compared with those of the United Kingdom babies so a proper feeding guidance to the nursing mother of infants in the rural area was more urgent.
2.THE ENERGY REQUIREMENT OF PRESCHOOL CHILDREN UNDER SUB-TROPIC CONDITIONSIII .THE ENERGY EXPENDITURE OF PRESCHOOL CHILDREN
Acta Nutrimenta Sinica 1956;0(04):-
Energy expenditures of 30 preschool children (with one half of males) randomized from 181 subjects aged from 5 to 6 in the same kindergarten were carefully measured by indirect method and respiratory chamber, including 21 items of activities and a total follow-up time-motion estimations was also made. The lowest energy expenditure in daily activity was the item of while asleep 0.709 kcal.m-2. min-1, physical exercise was at the middle 1.851 kcal .m-2. min-1, and the rapid running was the highest 4.762 kcal.m-2.min-1. A total average energy expenditure in 24 hours estimated was 1049.08 to 1177.66 kcal/day. The results were discussed.

Acta Nutrimenta Sinica 1956;0(01):-
Two hundred and eighteen mothers and their breast-fed babics were investigated in six production brigades in Xin-hui District in south China.About 99% of the mothers in this rural areas chose breast feeding for their infants. The average milk secretion of the mothers were about 845 grams daily both by random measurements of 62mothers and 24-hours continuous mcasurements of 12mothers.About 16.6%lacked sufficient brcast milk to different degree in 114 mothers who fed their babies 1 to 6 months old and seemed that the lacking of milk was correlated with the lower caloric and protein intake of the mothers .The growth curme of the babies of this obscrvation reached a plateau in the third month after delivery but somewhat flattened after the fourth as compared with the American babies even the birth weights of babies in both countries were niarly the same. One of important measures is assumed of the supplementation of foods excluded the breast milk to sustain the growing needs of the babies after the third month.
